Perceived effects of rotating shift work on nurses\' sleep quality and duration
The aim of this longitudinal study was to assess the effect of rotating shift work on perceived sleep quality and sleep duration of nurses at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi. Twenty four female nurses were recruited at random from among personnel engaged in rotating shift work. The nurses worked a three-phase schedule: five day shifts (7.00 – 17.00) followed by three night shifts (17.00 – 7.00) and five days off. Controls were 22 female nurses who did not perform night duties. Sleep quality and duration
was assessed using standardized and validated questionnaires
on sleep duration and subjective sleep quality (SSQ). One-way analysis of variance revealed a significant effect of shift phase on total sleep duration (F = 36.8, d.f. = 8, P < 0.000) and perceived sleep quality (F = 8.81, d.f. = 3, P < 0.000). Night shift work was associated with reduction of sleep quality and duration. The after effects of night shifts persisted during days of the recovery period indicating accumulation

A multidisciplinary approach to prevention
Cardiovascular disease accounts for 17,500 deaths globally, representing nearly half of all non-communicable disease deaths. The World Health Organization has set nine lifestyle, risk factor and medicines targets to achieve by 2025 with the aim of reducing premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by 25%. In order to succeed in this, we need to equip our global health professional workforce with the skills to support patients and their families with making lifestyle changes and being in concordance with cardioprotective medication regimes at every opportunity. Success depends on collegiate working through effective interdisciplinary team-based care characterised by shared goals, clear roles, mutual trust, effective communication and measurable processes and outcomes, with the patient and family at the centre of care. Nurses are the largest sector of the health professional workforce and their role in prevention should be optimised. Nurse coordinated care is proven to be effective, especially where they work in an interdisciplinary way with other health professionals such as doctors, pharmacists and psychologists, who provide equally important expertise for supporting holistic care. Successful care models are those that comprehensively target all adverse lifestyles and risk factors that are responsible for the development of cardiovascular disease. These characteristics should be reflected in the standards and core components of prevention and rehabilitation programmes

Wall Climbing And Pipe Crawler Robots For Nozzle Weld Inspection Inside Nuclear Pressure Vessels
This paper describes the design and development of
a NDT robotic solution to test circumferential welds located
inside pipe nozzles at a distance of 700mm from the inside walls
of nuclear pressure vessels. These welds are currently inspected
using very large robot arms that are taken into the containment
area and assembled. This is a time consuming operation that
exposes operators to radiation. A preferred solution is to develop a light weight and compact robot that can be carried into the containment area and inserted into a pressure vessel using an overhead crane. The crane is then removed and used for other tasks. The robot must then be operated to accomplish the weld inspection task in all the pipe nozzles located in the pressure vessel
Schizophrenia trials in China: a survey
OBJECTIVE: China's biomedical research activity is increasing and this literature is becoming more accessible online. Our aim was to survey all randomized control schizophrenia trials (RCTs) in one Chinese bibliographic database. METHOD: Chinese Academic Journals was electronically searched for RCTs and all relevant citations were also sought on PubMed to ascertain global accessibility. RESULTS: The search identified 3275 records, of which 982 were RCTs relevant to schizophrenia. A total of 71% (699) could be found by using English phrases. All the main body of text of the 982 papers was in Mandarin. On average, these trials involved about 100 people, with interventions and outcome measures familiar to schizophrenia trialists worldwide. Four of the 982 records (<1%) were identified on PubMed. CONCLUSION: Those undertaking systematic reviews should search the Chinese literature for relevant material. Failing to do this will leave the results of systematic reviews prone to random error or bias, or both
Evolutionarily Optimized Electromagnetic Sensor Measurements for Robust Surgical Navigation
© 2001-2012 IEEE. Miniaturized electromagnetic sensors are increasingly introduced to navigate surgical instruments to anatomical targets during minimally invasive procedures, such as endoscopic surgery. These sensors are usually attached at the distal tips of surgical instruments to track their three-dimensional motion represented by the position and orientation in six degrees of freedom. Unfortunately, these sensors suffer from inaccurate measurements and jitter errors due to the patient movement (e.g., respiratory motion) and magnetic field distortion. This paper proposes an evolutionary computing strategy to optimize the sensor measurements and improve the tracking accuracy of surgical navigation. We modified two evolutionary computation algorithms and proposed adaptive particle swarm optimization (APSO) and observation-boosted differential evolution (OBDE) to enhance the navigation accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate that our modified algorithms to evolutionarily optimize electromagnetic sensor measurements can critically reduce the tracking error from 4.8 to 2.9 mm. In particular, OBDE outperforms APSO for electromagnetic endoscopic navigation

Measurement of the Branching Fraction of J/psi --> pi+ pi- pi0
Using 58 million J/psi and 14 million psi' decays obtained by the BESII
experiment, the branching fraction of J/psi --> pi+ pi- pi0 is determined. The
result is (2.10+/-0.12)X10^{-2}, which is significantly higher than previous
