    A simple layout optimization formulation for load-carrying tensegrity structures

    Traditional tensegrity structures comprise isolated compression members lying inside a continuous network of tension members. In this contribution, a simple numerical layout optimization formulation is presented and used to identify the topologies of minimum volume tensegrity structures designed to carry external applied loads. Binary variables and associated constraints are used to limit (usually to one) the number of compressive elements connecting a node. A computationally efficient two-stage procedure employing mixed integer linear programming (MILP) is used to identify structures capable of carrying both externally applied loads and the self-stresses present when these loads are removed. Although tensegrity structures are often regarded as inherently ‘optimal’, the presence of additional constraints in the optimization formulation means that they can never be more optimal than traditional, non-tensegrity, structures. The proposed procedure is programmed in a MATLAB script (available for download) and a range of examples are used to demonstrate the efficacy of the approach presented

    Adaptive topology optimization of fail-safe truss structures

    Avoidance of disproportionate and progressive collapse, often termed ‘fail-safe design’, is a key consideration in the design of buildings and infrastructure. This paper addresses the problem of fail-safe truss topology optimization in the setting of plastic design, where damage is defined as a moveable circular region in which members are considered to have zero strength for that particular load case. A rigorous and computationally efficient iterative solution strategy is employed in both the dual (member adding) and primal (damage-case adding) problems simultaneously, which allows cases of high complexity and many damage cases (maximum of 16290 potential members and 16291 damage cases) to be solved to the global optimum. Common member-based damage definitions (e.g. damage to any one member) are shown to be highly dependent on the nodal grid; in the limiting case completely negating the effect of the fail-safe constraints. The method proposed in this article does not have such limitations, enabling a more sophisticated and robust treatment of fail-safe design. Moreover, the global minimization and high resolutions create new benchmarks for the least-material designs of ‘fail-safe’ structures using rigid-plastic materials. A number of example structures are considered (short cantilever, square cantilever, multi-span truss), and the effects of damage radius, location, and structure rationalisation are discussed

    LayOpt : an educational web-app for truss layout optimization

    A new interactive truss layout optimization web-app has been developed for educational use. This has been designed to be used on a range of devices, from mobile phones to desktop PCs. Truss designs are first generated via numerical layout optimization and then rationalized via geometry optimization. It is then shown that these designs can be simplified using a computationally inexpensive process that allows the user to control the trade-off between complexity and structural volume. The process involves the use of smooth Heaviside representations of member existence variables, with nodal slack forces employed that allow unstable intermediate truss structures. Full details of the web-app are provided in this contribution, from underlying formulation to cloud computing implementation. A range of numerical examples are used to demonstrate the efficacy of the web-app, and to show how it can potentially be used in educational and practical engineering settings

    Computational layout design optimization of frame structures

    Engineers often expend considerable effort identifying the most efficient cross-section sizes for the individual structural members forming a structure, but may neglect to check whether members are optimally positioned, or are even needed at all. This can lead to far more material being used to form a building structure than is needed. To address this, layout optimization can potentially be used early in the design process to identify efficient arrangements of structural members. This paper introduces an interactive design approach that combines parametric modelling and layout optimization, using an adaptive ‘member adding’ technique to allow large scale problems to be solved on a standard desktop PC. Incorporation of the approach in Rhino-Grasshopper allows integration of geometric modelling and structural layout optimization within a single interactive modeling environment. This paper briefly outlines the underlying theory and implementation details, and then describes application of the approach to benchmark problems and a case study problem, a three-centred space frame arch roof. In this case it is shown that a 30% reduction in material usage can potentially be achieved through the use of a layout optimization-based approach, but that measures to improve the practicality of the solutions for use in practice are required. This is being addressed as part of a new collaborative research project involving the Universities of Bath, Sheffield and Edinburgh

    What exactly is the China-style world order that Chinese officials and intellectual elites have recently been talking about, and how ready is China for it? An examination and analysis of discourses on ‘Africa Live’ on CCTV Africa, the first overseas news center of China Central Television (CCTV), yields some highly noticeable features and significant themes, confirming that although China has shifted from a low-profile approach to a more assertive one, in an attempt to change the global order, its verbal challenge and sometimes harsh criticism of the American-led international system is accompanied by an obvious absence of a clear vision of what the new world order should be like. This lack of a clear vision may be due to the fact that the Chinese discourse on world order is still a work in progress, constrained by internal practices, and Africa is its testing ground for the construction of a discourse that China envisages as an alternative

    Active children through incentive vouchers – evaluation (ACTIVE): a mixed-method feasibility study

    BackgroundAdolescents face many barriers to physical activity, demonstrated by the decline in physical activity levels in teenage populations. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of overcoming such barriers via the implementation of an activity-promoting voucher scheme to teenagers in deprived areas.MethodsAll Year 9 pupils (n = 115; 13.3 ± 0.48 years; 51 % boys) from one secondary school in Wales (UK) participated. Participants received £25 of activity vouchers every month for six months for physical activity or sporting equipment. Focus groups (n = 7), with 43 pupils, and qualitative interviews with teachers (n = 2) were conducted to assess feasibility, in addition to a process evaluation utilising the RE-AIM framework. Quantitative outcomes at baseline, five months (during intervention) and twelve months (follow-up) included: physical activity (accelerometer), aerobic fitness (12 min Cooper run) and self-reported activity (PAQ-A). Motivation to exercise (BREQ-2) was measured three months post-baseline and at follow-up.ResultsQualitative findings showed that vouchers encouraged friends to socialise through activity, provided opportunities to access local activities that pupils normally could not afford, and engaged both those interested and disinterested in physical education. Improvements in weekend moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and reductions in sedentary behaviour were observed in both sexes. Boys’ fitness significantly improved during the voucher scheme. ‘Non-active’ pupils (those not meeting recommended guidelines of 60 mins∙day−1) and those with higher motivation to exercise had higher voucher use.ConclusionsAdolescents, teachers and activity providers supported the voucher scheme and felt the vouchers enabled deprived adolescents to access more physical activity opportunities. Voucher usage was associated with improved attitudes to physical activity, increased socialisation with friends and improved fitness and physical activity; presenting interesting avenues for further exploration in a larger intervention trial

    Altered Arterial Stiffness and Subendocardial Viability Ratio in Young Healthy Light Smokers after Acute Exercise

    Studies showed that long-standing smokers have stiffer arteries at rest. However, the effect of smoking on the ability of the vascular system to respond to increased demands (physical stress) has not been studied. The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of smoking on arterial stiffness and subendocardial viability ratio, at rest and after acute exercise in young healthy individuals.Healthy light smokers (n = 24, pack-years = 2.9) and non-smokers (n = 53) underwent pulse wave analysis and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity measurements at rest, and 2, 5, 10, and 15 minutes following an exercise test to exhaustion. Smokers were tested, 1) after 12h abstinence from smoking (chronic condition) and 2) immediately after smoking one cigarette (acute condition). At rest, chronic smokers had higher augmentation index and lower aortic pulse pressure than non-smokers, while subendocardial viability ratio was not significantly different. Acute smoking increased resting augmentation index and decreased subendocardial viability ratio compared with non-smokers, and decreased subendocardial viability ratio compared with the chronic condition. After exercise, subendocardial viability ratio was lower, and augmentation index and aortic pulse pressure were higher in non-smokers than smokers in the chronic and acute conditions. cfPWV rate of recovery of was greater in non-smokers than chronic smokers after exercise. Non-smokers were also able to achieve higher workloads than smokers in both conditions.Chronic and acute smoking appears to diminish the vascular response to physical stress. This can be seen as an impaired 'vascular reserve' or a blunted ability of the blood vessels to accommodate the changes required to achieve higher workloads. These changes were noted before changes in arterial stiffness or subendocardial viability ratio occurred at rest. Even light smoking in young healthy individuals appears to have harmful effects on vascular function, affecting the ability of the vascular bed to respond to increased demands

    Current influences and approaches to promote future physical activity in 11–13 year olds: a focus group study

    BACKGROUND: Many children and adolescents are failing to meet current physical activity (PA) guidelines and consequently not achieving the benefits associated with regular participation in PA, with girls consistently less active than boys. In order to design interventions to increase physical activity in adolescents it is important to understand their perceptions of and preferences for physical activity. METHODS: One hundred eighty participants, mean (SD) age 12.1 (0.5) years, completed the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (PAQ-C) and had height and weight measured. This information was used to select a subsample of participants (n64; mean (SD) age 12.3 (0.4) years; 39 females; 25 males; 25 % overweight/obese) to take part in focus group discussions. Participants were grouped based on PAQ-C responses into ‘low-active’ and ‘highly-active’ groups, so that those with similar existing levels of PA were in the same focus group. A semi-structured discussion guide was employed to explore the key influences on current PA participation and to actively seek ideas on how best to promote future PA in this population. In total, nine focus groups (mixed-gender) were conducted within the school setting. All focus groups were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. RESULTS: A number of themes emerged in relation to influences on current PA including friendship and peers, family and other people, the consequences of not taking part in PA, changing priorities, and cost and access to resources. With regards to the future provision of PA, participants favoured opportunities to try new activities, increased provision of school-based activities which can be undertaken with friends and activities which incorporated the use of technology and encouragement through rewards and incentives. Gender differences were apparent in relation to the types of activities participants preferred taking part in. Differences were also observed between ‘low-active’ and ‘highly-active’ groups in relation to barriers to current participation in PA. CONCLUSIONS: This study has highlighted a number of influences on current and future participation in PA, which differed based on gender and existing PA levels, for example, maximising the potential of the school day and including technology and incentives. These components can inform targeted interventions to increase PA in low active adolescents

    On transmissible load formulations in topology optimization

    Transmissible loads are external loads defined by their line of action, with actual points of load application chosen as part of the topology optimization process. Although for problems where the optimal structure is a funicular, transmissible loads can be viewed as surface loads, in other cases such loads are free to be applied to internal parts of the structure. There are two main transmissible load formulations described in the literature: a rigid bar (constrained displacement) formulation or, less commonly, a migrating load (equilibrium) formulation. Here, we employ a simple Mohr’s circle analysis to show that the rigid bar formulation will only produce correct structural forms in certain specific circumstances. Numerical examples are used to demonstrate (and explain) the incorrect topologies produced when the rigid bar formulation is applied in other situations. A new analytical solution is also presented for a uniformly loaded cantilever structure. Finally, we invoke duality principles to elucidate the source of the discrepancy between the two formulations, considering both discrete truss and continuum topology optimization formulations
