    Trollope in perspective

    The Thesis opens with a brief summary of the ups and downs of Trollope's literary reputation. In the first chapter the extent of his range and his ability to create characters convincingly are examined. This is pursued further in Chapter Two with an analysis of some of the characters as moral beings and some consideration of the writer’s claim to intimacy with his readers. In Chapters Three, Four and Five, I have looked at a representative selection of the novels in chronological sequence in order to show the development of his art and his ideas together withal steady growth towards ironic detachment. The relationship of individual characters to some of the main institutions of Victorian England is investigated in Chapter Six, while the wider background of the nineteenth century and the ways in which we view it today are the subject of Chapter Seven. In Chapter Eight Trollope's own perceptive view of man is discussed. In the last chapter I have sought to assess Trollope’s artistic contribution in the context of a discussion of some current ideas about the value of literature

    We show that for two dimensional manifolds M with negative Euler characteristic there exists subsets of the space of smooth Riemannian metrics which are invariant and either parabolic or backwards-parabolic for the 2nd order RG flow. We also show that solutions exists globally on these sets. Finally, we establish the existence of an eternal solution that has both a UV and IR limit, and passes through regions where the flow is parabolic and backwards-parabolic

    The Quasi-Molecular Stage of Ternary Fission

    We developed a three-center phenomenological model,able to explain qualitatively the recently obtained experimental results concerning the quasimolecular stage of a light-particle accompanied fission process. It was derived from the liquid drop model under the assumption that the aligned configuration, with the emitted particle between the light and heavy fragment, is reached by increasing continuously the separation distance, while the radii of the heavy fragment and of the light particle are kept constant. In such a way,a new minimum of a short-lived molecular state appears in the deformation energy at a separation distance very close to the touching point. This minimum allows the existence of a short-lived quasi-molecular state, decaying into the three final fragments.The influence of the shell effects is discussed. The half-lives of some quasimolecular states which could be formed in the 10^{10}Be and 12^{12}C accompanied fission of 252^{252}Cf are roughly estimated to be the order of 1 ns, and 1 ms, respectively.Comment: 12 pages, 6 epsf, uses ws-p8-50x6-00.cl

    Non-divergent pseudo-potential treatment of spin-polarized fermions under 1D and 3D harmonic confinement

    Atom-atom scattering of bosonic one-dimensional (1D) atoms has been modeled successfully using a zero-range delta-function potential, while that of bosonic 3D atoms has been modeled successfully using Fermi-Huang's regularized s-wave pseudo-potential. Here, we derive the eigenenergies of two spin-polarized 1D fermions under external harmonic confinement interacting through a zero-range potential, which only acts on odd-parity wave functions, analytically. We also present a divergent-free zero-range potential treatment of two spin-polarized 3D fermions under harmonic confinement. Our pseudo-potential treatments are verified through numerical calculations for short-range model potentials.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures (subm. to PRA on 03/15/2004

    Observation of generalized synchronization of chaos in a driven chaotic system

    We report on the experimental observation of the generalized synchronization of chaos in a real physical system. We show that under a nonlinear resonant interaction, the chaotic dynamics of a single mode laser can become functionally related to that of a chaotic driving signal and furthermore as the coupling strength is further increased, the chaotic dynamics of the laser approaches that of the driving signal.Tang, D.     KlNESlOLOGlCAL ANALYSIS OF OVERARM THROWING FOR ACCURACY WITH DOMINANT AND NON-DOMINANT ARMS

    The main aim of this study was to examine differences kinematically between dominant and non-dominant overarm throws for accuracy. Fourty-nine right-handed primaly school students served as the subjects who were requested to make overarm throws with dominant and non-dominant arms. A three-dimensional Motion Analysis System was used to collect all kinematic data of overarm throwing while performance errors were recorded by a video camera. Performance errors and kinematic variables of right and lefl hands were compaired with Paired t-test and the relation among performance errors and kinematic variables was evaluated with canonical correlation. It was found that significant differences in the accuracy existed between dominant and non-dominant overarm throws. The dominant hand shows much better throwing performance in terms of accuracy. Kinematic analysis also indicated that there were significant differences in velocity and acceleration even though there was a great similarity in the timing of velocity and acceleration in overarm throws for accuracy

    Transfer Entropy as a Log-likelihood Ratio

    Transfer entropy, an information-theoretic measure of time-directed information transfer between joint processes, has steadily gained popularity in the analysis of complex stochastic dynamics in diverse fields, including the neurosciences, ecology, climatology and econometrics. We show that for a broad class of predictive models, the log-likelihood ratio test statistic for the null hypothesis of zero transfer entropy is a consistent estimator for the transfer entropy itself. For finite Markov chains, furthermore, no explicit model is required. In the general case, an asymptotic chi-squared distribution is established for the transfer entropy estimator. The result generalises the equivalence in the Gaussian case of transfer entropy and Granger causality, a statistical notion of causal influence based on prediction via vector autoregression, and establishes a fundamental connection between directed information transfer and causality in the Wiener-Granger sense
