Modulation of social behavior by the agouti pigmentation gene
Agouti is a secreted neuropeptide that acts as an endogenous antagonist of melanocortin receptors. Mice and rats lacking agouti (called non-agouti) have dark fur due to a disinhibition of melanocortin signaling and pigment deposition in the hair follicle. Non-agouti animals have also been reported to exhibit altered behavior, despite no evidence for the expression of agouti outside the skin. Here we confirm that non-agouti mice show altered social behavior and uncover expression of agouti in the preputial gland, a sebaceous organ in the urinary tract that secretes molecules involved in social behavior. Non-agouti mice had enlarged preputial glands and altered levels of putative preputial pheromones and surgical removal of the gland reversed the behavioral phenotype. Potential of mean force and the charge reversal of rodlike polyions
A simple model is presented to calculate the potential of mean force between
a polyion and a multivalent counterion inside a polyelectrolite solution. We
find that under certain conditions the electrostatic interactions can lead to a
strong attraction between the polyions and the multivalent counterions,
favoring formation of overcharged polyion-counterion complexes. It is found
that small concentrations of salt enhance the overcharging, while an excessive
amount of salt hinders the charge reversal. The kinetic limitations to

N_pN_n dependence of empirical formula for the lowest excitation energy of the 2^+ states in even-even nuclei
We examine the effects of the additional term of the type on the recently proposed empirical formula for the lowest excitation
energy of the states in even-even nuclei. This study is motivated by the
fact that this term carries the favorable dependence of the valence nucleon
numbers dictated by the scheme. We show explicitly that there is not
any improvement in reproducing by including the extra
term. However, our study also reveals that the excitation energies
, when calculated by the term alone (with the mass number
dependent term), are quite comparable to those calculated by the original

Exact solutions of a restricted ballistic deposition model on a one-dimensional staircase
Surface structure of a restricted ballistic deposition(RBD) model is examined
on a one-dimensional staircase with free boundary conditions. In this model,
particles can be deposited only at the steps of the staircase. We set up
recurrence relations for the surface fluctuation width using generating
function method. Steady-state solutions are obtained exactly given system size
. In the infinite-size limit, diverges as with the scaling
exponent . The dynamic exponent
is also found to be by solving the recurrence relations
numerically. This model can be viewed as a simple variant of the model which
belongs to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class . Comparing its deposition time scale
with that of the single-step model, we argue that must be the same as

A parabolic approach to the control of opinion spreading
We analyze the problem of controlling to consensus a nonlinear system
modeling opinion spreading. We derive explicit exponential estimates on the
cost of approximately controlling these systems to consensus, as a function of
the number of agents N and the control time-horizon T. Our strategy makes use
of known results on the controllability of spatially discretized semilinear

Symmetry-Breaking Motility
Locomotion of bacteria by actin polymerization, and in vitro motion of
spherical beads coated with a protein catalyzing polymerization, are examples
of active motility. Starting from a simple model of forces locally normal to
the surface of a bead, we construct a phenomenological equation for its motion.
The singularities at a continuous transition between moving and stationary
beads are shown to be related to the symmetries of its shape. Universal
features of the phase behavior are calculated analytically and confirmed by
simulations. Fluctuations in velocity are shown to be generically

Wigner crystal model of counterion induced bundle formation of rod-like polyelectrolytes
A simple electrostatic theory of condensation of rod-like polyelectrolytes
under influence of polyvalent ions is proposed. It is based on the idea that
Manning condensation of ions results in formation of the Wigner crystal on a
background of a bundle of rods. It is shown that, depending on a single
dimensionless parameter, this can be the densely packed three-dimensional
Wigner crystal or the two-dimensional crystal on the rod surfaces. For DNA the
location of charge on the spiral results in a model of the one-dimensional
Wigner crystal. It is also argued that the Wigner crystal idea can be applied
to self-assembly of other polyelectrolytes, for example, colloids and DNA-lipid

Indexación: Web of ScienceBlazars, one of the most extreme classes of active galaxies, constitute so far the largest known population of.-ray sources, and their number is continuously growing in the Fermi catalogs. However, in the latest release of the Fermi catalog there is still a large fraction of sources that are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCUs) for which optical spectroscopic observations are necessary to confirm their nature and their associations. In addition, about one-third of the gamma-ray point sources listed in the Third Fermi-LAT Source Catalog (3FGL) are still unassociated and lacking an assigned lower-energy counterpart. Since 2012 we have been carrying out an optical spectroscopic campaign to observe blazar candidates to confirm their nature. In this paper, the sixth of the series, we present optical spectroscopic observations for 30 gamma-ray blazar candidates from different observing programs we carried out with the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, William Herschel Telescope, Observatorio Astronomico Nacional, Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope, and Magellan. Telescopes. We found that 21 out of 30 sources investigated are BL Lac objects, while the remaining targets are classified as flat-spectrum radio quasars showing the typical broad emission lines of normal quasi-stellar objects. We conclude that our selection of gamma-ray blazar. candidates based on their multifrequency properties continues to be a successful way to discover potential low-energy counterparts of the Fermi. unidentified gamma-ray sources and to confirm the nature of BCUs.http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/0004-6256/151/4/95/met
Stiff polymer in monomer ensemble
We make use of the previously developed formalism for a monomer ensemble and
include angular dependence of the segments of the polymer chains thus
described. In particular we show how to deal with stiffness when the polymer
chain is confined to certain regions. We investigate the stiffness from the
perspectives of a differential equation, integral equations, or recursive
relations for both continuum and lattice models. Exact analytical solutions are
