    Spin Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a magnetic field

    We study the spin Hall effect of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a magnetic field and both the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. We show that the value of the spin Hall conductivity, which is finite only if the Zeeman spin splitting is taken into account, may be tuned by varying the ratio of the in-plane and out-of-plane components of the applied magnetic field. We identify the origin of this behavior with the different role played by the interplay of spin-orbit and Zeeman couplings for in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic field components.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, submitte

    Spin-selective localization due to intrinsic spin-orbit coupling

    We study spin-dependent diffusive transport in the presence of a tunable spin-orbit (SO) interaction in a two-dimensional electron system. The spin precession of an electron in the SO coupling field is expressed in terms of a covariant curvature, affecting the quantum interference between different electronic trajectories. Controlling this curvature field by modulating the SO coupling strength and its gradients by, e.g., electric or elastic means, opens intriguing possibilities for exploring spin-selective localization physics. In particular, applying a weak magnetic field allows the control of the electron localization independently for two spin directions, with the spin-quantization axis that could be "engineered" by appropriate SO interaction gradients.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur

    Quantum Spin Tomography in Ferromagnet-Normal Conductors

    We present a theory for a complete reconstruction of non-local spin correlations in ferromagnet-normal conductors. This quantum spin tomography is based on cross correlation measurements of electric currents into ferromagnetic terminals with controllable magnetization directions. For normal injectors, non-local spin correlations are universal and strong. The correlations are suppressed by spin-flip scattering and, for ferromagnetic injectors, by increasing injector polarization.Comment: 4+ page

    Observation-based assessment of stratospheric fractional release, lifetimes, and ozone depletion potentials of ten important source gases

    Estimates of the recovery time of stratospheric ozone heavily rely on the exact knowledge of the processes that lead to the decomposition of the relevant halogenated source gases. Crucial parameters in this context are fractional release factors (FRFs) as well as stratospheric lifetimes and ozone depletion potentials (ODPs). We here present data from the analysis of air samples collected between 2009 and 2011 on board research aircraft flying in the mid- and high-latitude stratosphere and infer the above-mentioned parameters for ten major source gases: CFCl3 (CFC-11), CF2Cl2 (CFC-12), CF2ClCFCl2 (CFC-113), CCl4 (carbon tetrachloride), CH3CCl3 (methyl chloroform), CHF2Cl (HCFC-22), CH3CFCl2 (HCFC-141b), CH3CF2Cl (HCFC-142b), CF2ClBr (H-1211), and CF3Br (H-1301). The inferred correlations of their FRFs with mean ages of air reveal less decomposition as compared to previous studies for most compounds. When using the calculated set of FRFs to infer equivalent stratospheric chlorine, we find a reduction of more than 20% as compared to the values inferred in the most recent Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO, 2011). We also note that FRFs and their correlations with mean age are not generally time-independent as often assumed. The stratospheric lifetimes were calculated relative to that of CFC-11. Within our uncertainties the ratios between stratospheric lifetimes inferred here agree with the values in recent WMO reports except for CFC-11, CFC-12 and CH3CCl3. Finally, we calculate lower ODPs than recommended by WMO for six out of ten compounds, with changes most pronounced for the three HCFCs. Collectively these newly calculated values may have important implications for the severity and recovery time of stratospheric ozone loss

    In a recent paper Tettamanzi et al (2009 Nanotechnology \bf{20} 465302) describe the fabrication of superconducting Nb nanowires using a focused ion beam. They interpret their conductivity data in the framework of thermal and quantum phase slips below TcT_c. In the following we will argue that their analysis is inappropriate and incomplete, leading to contradictory results.     Impact of Uncertainties in Hadron Production on Air-Shower Predictions

    At high energy, cosmic rays can only be studied by measuring the extensive air showers they produce in the atmosphere of the Earth. Although the main features of air showers can be understood within a simple model of successive interactions, detailed simulations and a realistic description of particle production are needed to calculate observables relevant to air shower experiments. Currently hadronic interaction models are the main source of uncertainty of such simulations.
