Thermodynamics of Constituent Quarks
We investigate the thermal behavior of quarks and antiquarks interacting via
a temperature-dependent linear potential. The quarks are constituent quarks
with dynamically generated masses from the background linear -model.We
find a transition from a system of bound mesons to a correlated quark gas at

Evaluating megaprojects: from the âiron triangleâ to network mapping
Evaluation literature has paid relatively little attention to the specific needs of evaluating large, complex industrial and infrastructure projects, often called âmegaprojectsâ. The abundant megaproject governance literature, in turn, has largely focused on the so-called âmegaproject pathologiesâ, i.e. the chronic budget overruns, and failure of such projects to keep to timetables and deliver the expected social and economic benefits. This article draws on these two strands of literature, identifies shortcomings, and suggests potential pathways towards an improved evaluation of megaprojects. To counterbalance the current overemphasis on relatively narrowly defined accountability as the main function of megaproject evaluation, and the narrow definition of project success in megaproject evaluation, the article argues that conceptualizing megaprojects as dynamic and evolving networks would provide a useful basis for the design of an evaluation approach better able to promote learning and to address the socio economic aspects of megaprojects. A modified version of ânetwork mappingâ is suggested as a possible framework for megaproject evaluation, with the exploration of the multiple accountability relationships as a central evaluation task, designed to reconcile learning and accountability as the central evaluation functions. The article highlights the role of evaluation as an âemergentâ property of spontaneous megaproject âgoverningâ, and explores the challenges that this poses to the role of the evaluator
Normal Ordering for Deformed Boson Operators and Operator-valued Deformed Stirling Numbers
The normal ordering formulae for powers of the boson number operator
are extended to deformed bosons. It is found that for the `M-type'
deformed bosons, which satisfy , the
extension involves a set of deformed Stirling numbers which replace the
Stirling numbers occurring in the conventional case. On the other hand, the
deformed Stirling numbers which have to be introduced in the case of the
`P-type' deformed bosons, which satisfy , are found to depend on the operator . This distinction
between the two types of deformed bosons is in harmony with earlier
observations made in the context of a study of the extended

Remote control of a robotic hand using a leap sensor
This paper presents a low-cost gesture-based remote control of a ro-botic hand. The proposed control architecture is based on a commercial leap motion sensor and an Arduino board, which have been chosen due to their low-cost and user-friendly features. A specific Matlab code has been implemented to collect data from the leap motion sensor and to generate proper instructions to control a robotic hand, which has been 3D print at Sheffield Hallam Univer-sity. Experimental tests have been carried out validate the effectiveness of the proposed remote control for performing various grasping tasks
161. The Potential Role of Extensor Muscle Fatigue in the Onset of Intervertebral Disc Degeneration: A Novel In Vivo Model
BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Occupation is strongly correlated to low back pain (LBP). Specific occupational activities associated with low back pain include poor posture, whole body vibration, and repetitive lifting. These activities have a common link: they result in fatigue of the primary spinal extensor musculature. This fatigue may lead to increased intervertebral loading - a stimulus for disc degeneration. If true, this association could provide a vital connection between detrimental physical activities and LBP. However, the link between muscle fatigue and increased load across the disc space has never been quantified in vivo.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop and test a wireless multi-axial force-sensing implant and large animal model of primary extensor muscle fatigue. Combined, these tools allow measurement of in vivo spinal forces during muscle fatigue to quantify changes in spine loading
Occult hepatitisâB virus infection: diagnosis, implications and management?
Occult hepatitisâB virus (HBV) infection is generally defined as the detection of HBV-DNA in the serum or liver tissue of patients who test negative for hepatitisâB surface antigen. In most cases, occult HBV infection is related to low level HBV infection with subdetectable levels of HBsAg and not infection with HBV variants that cannot express Sâproteins or produce S proteins with aberrant epitopes that are not detected by conventional serological assays. Prevalence of occult HBV infection is related to the overall prevalence of HBV infection in that country, being more common in persons with prior exposure to HBV. Occult HBV infection has been found in a substantial proportion of patients with cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma but other causes of liver disease are frequently present. The Open Source GAITOR Suite for Rodent Gait Analysis
Locomotive changes are often associated with disease or injury, and these changes can be quantified through gait analysis. Gait analysis has been applied to preclinical studies, providing quantitative behavioural assessment with a reasonable clinical analogue. However, available gait analysis technology for small animals is somewhat limited. Furthermore, technological and analytical challenges can limit the effectiveness of preclinical gait analysis. The Gait Analysis Instrumentation and Technology Optimized for Rodents (GAITOR) Suite is designed to increase the accessibility of preclinical gait analysis to researchers, facilitating hardware and software customization for broad applications. Here, the GAITOR Suiteâs utility is demonstrated in 4 models: a monoiodoacetate (MIA) injection model of joint pain, a sciatic nerve injury model, an elbow joint contracture model, and a spinal cord injury model. The GAITOR Suite identified unique compensatory gait patterns in each model, demonstrating the softwareâs utility for detecting gait changes in rodent models of highly disparate injuries and diseases. Robust gait analysis may improve preclinical model selection, disease sequelae assessment, and evaluation of potential therapeutics
Vision-based portuguese sign language recognition system
Vision-based hand gesture recognition is an area of active current research in computer vision and machine learning. Being a natural way of human interaction, it is an area where many researchers are working on, with the goal of making human computer interaction (HCI) easier and natural, without the need for any extra devices. So, the primary goal of gesture recognition research is to create systems, which can identify specific human gestures and use them, for example, to convey information. For that, vision-based hand gesture interfaces require fast and extremely robust hand detection, and gesture recognition in real time. Hand gestures are a powerful human communication modality with lots of potential applications and in this context we have sign language recognition, the communication method of deaf people. Sign lan- guages are not standard and universal and the grammars differ from country to coun- try. In this paper, a real-time system able to interpret the Portuguese Sign Language is presented and described. Experiments showed that the system was able to reliably recognize the vowels in real-time, with an accuracy of 99.4% with one dataset of fea- tures and an accuracy of 99.6% with a second dataset of features. Although the im- plemented solution was only trained to recognize the vowels, it is easily extended to recognize the rest of the alphabet, being a solid foundation for the development of any vision-based sign language recognition user interface system
