Peculiar Velocities of Nonlinear Structure: Voids in McVittie Spacetime
As a study of peculiar velocities of nonlinear structure, we analyze the
model of a relativistic thin-shell void in the expanding universe. (1) Adopting
McVittie (MV) spacetime as a background universe, we investigate the dynamics
of an uncompensated void with negative MV mass. Although the motion itself is
quite different from that of a compensated void, as shown by Haines & Harris
(1993), the present peculiar velocities are not affected by MV mass. (2) We
discuss how precisely the formula in the linear perturbation theory applies to
nonlinear relativistic voids, using the results in (1) as well as the previous
results for the homogeneous background (Sakai, Maeda, & Sato 1993). (3) We
re-examine the effect of the cosmic microwave background radiation. Contrary to
the results of Pim & Lake (1986, 1988), we find that the effect is negligible.
We show that their results are due to inappropriate initial conditions. Our
results (1)-(3) suggest that the formula in the linear perturbation theory is

Auto-calibration of ultrasonic lubricant-film thickness measurements
The measurement of oil film thickness in a lubricated component is essential information for performance monitoring and design. It is well established that such measurements can be made ultrasonically if the lubricant film is modelled as a collection of small springs. The ultrasonic method requires that component faces are separated and a reference reflection recorded in order to obtain a reflection coefficient value from which film thickness is calculated. The novel and practically useful approach put forward in this paper and validated experimentally allows reflection coefficient measurement without the requirement for a reference. This involves simultaneously measuring the amplitude and phase of an ultrasonic pulse reflected from a layer. Provided that the acoustic properties of the substrate are known, the theoretical relationship between the two can be fitted to the data in order to yield reflection coefficient amplitude and phase for an infinitely thick layer. This is equivalent to measuring a reference signal directly, but importantly does not require the materials to be separated. The further valuable aspect of this approach, which is demonstrated experimentally, is its ability to be used as a self-calibrating routine, inherently compensating for temperature effects. This is due to the relationship between the amplitude and phase being unaffected by changes in temperature which cause unwanted changes to the incident pulse. Finally, error analysis is performed showing how the accuracy of the results can be optimized. A finding of particular significance is the strong dependence of the accuracy of the technique on the amplitude of reflection coefficient input data used. The fertilizers requirements of sugar beet
The paper describes the results of over 300 factorial experiments carried out in each factory area in the years 1934–49 for the Sugar Beet Research and Education Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture as a result of co-operation between Rothamsted workers and the agriculturists and fieldmen attached to the beet factories. All the experiments tested the effects of levels of nitrogen, phosphate and potash, and rather more than half tested the effect of salt also.
Except on fen soils, nitrogen gave substantial responses in all factory areas, especially in the presence of high levels of potash or salt. Large variations in response from season to season were closely associated with the rainfall of the preceding winter months, responses being greater after wet winters than dry ones.
In spite of some selection of sites in favour of greater responses, the average net returns from phosphate were relatively small.
The effect of potash was closely linked with the amount of nitrogen applied; in the presence of nitrogen, dressings well above the level of 1·2 cwt. K2O per acre tested in the experiments are likely to give a useful net return. Soils derived from the Chalky Boulder Clay seem to be exceptional in showing no response. Apart from this, there were only small variations in responses to nitrogen and potash between factory areas. The application of 5 cwt. salt gave substantial responses in almost all parts of the country, whether or not potash was also applied; on the other hand, responses to potash were usually small when salt was also applied.
Whilst there was a general relationship between soil analysis for phosphate and potash (citric acid method) and crop response, adjustments to the optimal dressings according to soil analysis were not of sufficient reliability to be of much practical value.

Hydrogen atom moving across a strong magnetic field: analytical approximations
Analytical approximations are constructed for binding energies,
quantum-mechanical sizes and oscillator strengths of main radiative transitions
of hydrogen atoms arbitrarily moving in magnetic fields 10^{12}-10^{13} G.
Examples of using the obtained approximations for determination of maximum
transverse velocity of an atom and for evaluation of absorption spectra in

Prospects for local co-governance
British local authorities and their partners are increasingly developing new ways of working together with local communities. The nature of this co-working, however, is complex, multi-faceted and little understood. This article argues for greater clarity of thinking on the topic, by analysing this co-working as a form of political co-governance, and drawing attention in particular to issues of scale and democracy. Using evidence from a study of 43 local authority areas, 16 authorities are identified where co-governance is practised, following three main types of approach: service-influencing, service-delivering and parish council developing. It is concluded that strengthening political co-governance is essential for a healthy democracy
Star formation histories and evolution of 35 brightest E+A galaxies from SDSS DR5
We pick out the 35 brightest galaxies from Goto's E+A galaxies catalogue
which are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5. The
spectra of E+As are prominently characterized by the strong Balmer absorption
lines but little [Oii] or H_alpha emission lines. In this work we study the
stellar populations of the sample galaxies by fitting their spectra using
ULySS, which is a robust full spectrum fitting method. We fit each of the
sample with 1-population (a single stellar population-a SSP) and 3-population
(3 SSPs) models, separately. By 1-population fits, we obtain SSP-equivalent
ages and metallicities which correspond to the `luminosity-weighted' averages.
By 3-population fits, we divide components into three groups in age (old
stellar population-OSP, intermediate-age stellar population-ISP, and young
stellar population-YSP), and then get the optimal age, metallicity and
population fractions in both mass and light for OSP, ISP and YSP. During the
fits, both Pegase.HR/Elodie3.1 and Vazdekis/Miles are used as two independent
population models. The two models result in generally consistent conclusions as
follows: for all the sample galaxies, YSPs (< 1Gyr) make important
contributions to the light. However, the dominant contributors to mass are
OSPs. We also reconstruct the smoothing star formation histories (SFHs) by
giving star formation rate (SFR) versus evolutionary age. In addition, we fit
the E+A sample and 34 randomly selected elliptical galaxies with 2-population
(2 SSPs) model. We obtain the equivalent age of old components for each of the
E+A sample and elliptical galaxies. By comparison, the old components of E+As
are statistically much younger than those of ellipticals. From the standpoint
of the stellar population age, this probably provides an evidence for the
proposed evolutionary link from E+As to early-types (E/S0s).Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication on MNRA
Viscous stabilization of 2D drainage displacements with trapping
We investigate the stabilization mechanisms due to viscous forces in the
invasion front during drainage displacement in two-dimensional porous media
using a network simulator. We find that in horizontal displacement the
capillary pressure difference between two different points along the front
varies almost linearly as function of height separation in the direction of the
displacement. The numerical result supports arguments taking into account the
loopless displacement pattern where nonwetting fluid flow in separate strands
(paths). As a consequence, we show that existing theories developed for viscous
stabilization, are not compatible with drainage when loopless strands dominate
