Deterministic dense coding and entanglement entropy
We present an analytical study of the standard two-party deterministic
dense-coding protocol, under which communication of perfectly distinguishable
messages takes place via a qudit from a pair of non-maximally entangled qudits
in pure state |S>. Our results include the following: (i) We prove that it is
possible for a state |S> with lower entanglement entropy to support the sending
of a greater number of perfectly distinguishable messages than one with higher
entanglement entropy, confirming a result suggested via numerical analysis in
Mozes et al. [Phys. Rev. A 71 012311 (2005)]. (ii) By explicit construction of
families of local unitary operators, we verify, for dimensions d = 3 and d=4, a
conjecture of Mozes et al. about the minimum entanglement entropy that supports
the sending of d + j messages, j = 2, ..., d-1; moreover, we show that the j=2
and j= d-1 cases of the conjecture are valid in all dimensions. (iii) Given
that |S> allows the sending of K messages and has the square roof of c as its
largest Schmidt coefficient, we show that the inequality c <= d/K, established
by Wu et al. [ Phys. Rev. A 73, 042311 (2006)], must actually take the form c <
d/K if K = d+1, while our constructions of local unitaries show that equality
can be realized if K = d+2 or K = 2d-1.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures. Published versio
QUAGMIRE v1.3: a quasi-geostrophic model for investigating rotating fluids experiments
QUAGMIRE is a quasi-geostrophic numerical model for performing fast, high-resolution simulations of multi-layer rotating annulus laboratory experiments on a desktop personal computer. The model uses a hybrid finite-difference/spectral approach to numerically integrate the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations of motion in cylindrical geometry in each layer. Version 1.3 implements the special case of two fluid layers of equal resting depths. The flow is forced either by a differentially rotating lid, or by relaxation to specified streamfunction or potential vorticity fields, or both. Dissipation is achieved through Ekman layer pumping and suction at the horizontal boundaries, including the internal interface. The effects of weak interfacial tension are included, as well as the linear topographic beta-effect and the quadratic centripetal beta-effect. Stochastic forcing may optionally be activated, to represent approximately the effects of random unresolved features. A leapfrog time stepping scheme is used, with a Robert filter. Flows simulated by the model agree well with those observed in the corresponding laboratory experiments
Phases of granular segregation in a binary mixture
We present results from an extensive experimental investigation into granular
segregation of a shallow binary mixture in which particles are driven by
frictional interactions with the surface of a vibrating horizontal tray. Three
distinct phases of the mixture are established viz; binary gas (unsegregated),
segregation liquid and segregation crystal. Their ranges of existence are
mapped out as a function of the system's primary control parameters using a
number of measures based on Voronoi tessellation. We study the associated
transitions and show that segregation can be suppressed is the total filling
fraction of the granular layer, , is decreased below a critical value,
, or if the dimensionless acceleration of the driving, , is
increased above a value .Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
KPP reaction-diffusion equations with a non-linear loss inside a cylinder
We consider in this paper a reaction-diffusion system in presence of a flow
and under a KPP hypothesis. While the case of a single-equation has been
extensively studied since the pioneering Kolmogorov-Petrovski-Piskunov paper,
the study of the corresponding system with a Lewis number not equal to 1 is
still quite open. Here, we will prove some results about the existence of
travelling fronts and generalized travelling fronts solutions of such a system
with the presence of a non-linear spacedependent loss term inside the domain.
In particular, we will point out the existence of a minimal speed, above which
any real value is an admissible speed. We will also give some spreading results
for initial conditions decaying exponentially at infinity
Hinode EUV Imaging Spectrometer Observations of Solar Active Region Dynamics
The EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on the Hinode satellite is capable of
measuring emission line center positions for Gaussian line profiles to a
fraction of a spectral pixel, resulting in relative solar Doppler-shift
measurements with an accuracy of less than a km/s for strong lines. We show an
example of the application of that capability to an active region sit-and-stare
observation in which the EIS slit is placed at one location on the Sun and many
exposures are taken while the spacecraft tracking keeps the same solar location
within the slit. For the active region examined (NOAA 10930), we find that
significant intensity and Doppler-shift fluctuations as a function of time are
present at a number of locations. These fluctuations appear to be similar to
those observed in high-temperature emission lines with other space-borne
spectroscopic instruments. With its increased sensitivity over earlier
spectrometers and its ability to image many emission lines simultaneously, EIS
should provide significant new constraints on Doppler-shift oscillations in the
corona.Comment: 7 Pages, 7 figure
Fast pyrolysis of halogenated plastics recovered from waste computers
The disposal of waste computers is an issue that is gaining increasing interest around the world. In this paper, results from the fast pyrolysis in a fluidized bed reactor of three different waste computer monitor casings composed of mainly acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymer and two different waste computer body casings composed of mostly poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) type polymers are presented. Preliminary characterization of the waste plastics was investigated using coupled thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (TGA-FT-IR). The results showed that the plastics decomposed in two stages. For the ABS-containing monitor casings, aromatic and aliphatic material were released in the first and second stages. The PVC-containing computer body casing samples showed a first-stage evolution of HCl and a second stage evolution of aromatic and aliphatic material and further HCl. In addition, each of the five plastics was fast-pyrolyzed in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed reactor at 500 °C. The fluidized bed pyrolysis led to the conversion of most of the plastics to pyrolysis oil, although the two PVC computer body cases produced large quantities of HCl. The pyrolysis oils were characterized by GC-MS and it was found that they were chemically very heterogeneous and contained a wide range of aliphatic, aromatic, halogenated, oxygenated, and nitrogenated compounds
The Lyapunov exponent in the Sinai billiard in the small scatterer limit
We show that Lyapunov exponent for the Sinai billiard is with where
is the radius of the circular scatterer. We consider the disk-to-disk-map
of the standard configuration where the disks is centered inside a unit square.Comment: 15 pages LaTeX, 3 (useful) figures available from the autho
