The detection of geothermal areas from Skylab thermal data
Skylab-4 X-5 thermal data of the geysers area was analyzed to determine the feasibility of using midday Skylab images to detect geothermal areas. The hottest ground areas indicated on the Skylab image corresponded to south-facing barren or sparsely vegetated slopes. A geothermal area approximately 15 by 30 m coincided with one of the hottest areas indicated by Skylab. This area could not be unambiguously distinguished from the other areas which are believed to be hotter than their surroundings as a result of their topography, and micrometeorological conditions. A simple modification of a previous thermal model was performed and the predicted temperatures for the hottest slopes using representative values was in general agreement with the observed data. It is concluded that data from a single midday Skylab pass cannot be used to locate geothermal areas

Central Neurocytoma: A Review of Clinical Management and Histopathologic Features.
Central neurocytoma (CN) is a rare, benign brain tumor often located in the lateral ventricles. CN may cause obstructive hydrocephalus and manifest as signs of increased intracranial pressure. The goal of treatment for CN is a gross total resection (GTR), which often yields excellent prognosis with a very high rate of tumor control and survival. Adjuvant radiosurgery and radiotherapy may be considered to improve tumor control when GTR cannot be achieved. Chemotherapy is also not considered a primary treatment, but has been used as a salvage therapy. The radiological features of CN are indistinguishable from those of other brain tumors; therefore, many histological markers, such as synaptophysin, can be very useful for diagnosing CNs. Furthermore, the MIB-1 Labeling Index seems to be correlated with the prognosis of CN. We also discuss oncogenes associated with these elusive tumors. Further studies may improve our ability to accurately diagnose CNs and to design the optimal treatment regimens for patients with CNs
Apoptotic depletion of CD4<SUP>+</SUP> T cells in idiopathic CD4<SUP>+</SUP> T lymphocytopenia
Progressive loss of CD4+ T lymphocytes, accompanied by opportunistic infections characteristic of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome, ahs been reported in the absence of any known etiology. The pathogenesis of this syndrome, a subset of idiopathic CD4+ T lymphocytopenia (ICL), is uncertain. We report that CD4+ T cells from seven of eight ICL patients underwent accelerated programmed cell death, a process facilitated by T cell receptor cross-linking. Apoptosis was associated with enhanced expression of Fas and Fas ligand in unstimulated cell populations, and partially inhibited by soluble anti-Fas mAb. In addition, apoptosis was suppressed by aurintricarboxylic acid, an inhibitor of calcium-dependent endonucleases and proteases, in cells from four of seven patients, The in vivo significance of these findings was supported by three factors: the absence of accelerated apoptosis in persons with stable, physiologic CD4 lymphopenia without clinical immune deficiency; detection of serum antihistone H2B autoantibodies, one consequence of DNA fragmentation, in some patients; and its selectivity, with apoptosis limited to the CD4 population in some, and occurring among CD8+ T cells predominantly in those individuals with marked depletion of both CD4+ T lymphocytes linked to clinical immune suppression have evidence for accelerated T cell apoptosis in vitro that may be pathophysiologic and amenable to therapy with apoptosis inhibitors
Behavioral responses to predatory sounds predict sensitivity of cetaceans to anthropogenic noise within a soundscape of fear
Funding was provided by the US Navy Living Marine Resources and Office of Naval Research programs, Netherlands Ministry of Defence, Norwegian Ministry of Defence, UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, and DGA French Ministry of Defence.Acoustic signals travel efficiently in the marine environment, allowing soniferous predators and prey to eavesdrop on each other. Our results with four cetacean species indicate that they use acoustic information to assess predation risk and have evolved mechanisms to reduce predation risk by ceasing foraging. Species that more readily gave up foraging in response to predatory sounds of killer whales also decreased foraging more during 1- to 4-kHz sonar exposures, indicating that species exhibiting costly antipredator responses also have stronger behavioral reactions to anthropogenic noise. This advance in our understanding of the drivers of disturbance helps us to predict what species and habitats are likely to be most severely impacted by underwater noise pollution in oceans undergoing increasing anthropogenic activities. As human activities impact virtually every animal habitat on the planet, identifying species at-risk from disturbance is a priority. Cetaceans are an example taxon where responsiveness to anthropogenic noise can be severe but highly species and context specific, with source–receiver characteristics such as hearing sensitivity only partially explaining this variability. Here, we predicted that ecoevolutionary factors that increase species responsiveness to predation risk also increase responsiveness to anthropogenic noise. We found that reductions in intense-foraging time during exposure to 1- to 4-kHz naval sonar and predatory killer whale sounds were highly correlated (r = 0.92) across four cetacean species. Northern bottlenose whales ceased foraging completely during killer whale and sonar exposures, followed by humpback, long-finned pilot, and sperm whales, which reduced intense foraging by 48 to 97level responses to killer whale playbacks, implying a similar level of perceived risk. The correlation cannot be solely explained by hearing sensitivity, indicating that species- and context-specific antipredator adaptations also shape cetacean responses to human-made noise. Species that are more responsive to predator presence are predicted to be more disturbance sensitive, implying a looming double whammy for Arctic cetaceans facing increased anthropogenic and predator activity with reduced ice cover.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Laser-induced solid-solid phase transition in As under pressure: A theoretical prediction
In Arsenic a pressure-induced solid-solid phase transition from the A7 into
the simple cubic structure has been experimentally demonstrated [Beister et
al., Phys. Rev. B 41, 5535 (1990)]. In this paper we present calculations,
which predict that this phase transition can also be induced by an ultrashort
laser pulse in As under pressure. In addition, calculations for the
pressure-induced phase transition are presented. Using density functional
theory in the generalized gradient approximation, we found that the
pressure-induced phase transition takes place at 26.3 GPa and is accompanied by
a volume change "Delta V" = 0.5 bohr^3/atom. The laser-induced phase transition
is predicted for an applied pressure of 23.8 GPa and an absorbed laser energy

Children's spontaneous correction of false beliefs in a conversation partner.
Preschool children were tested for their ability to vary the verbal information they offered regarding an object's location depending on whether the person searching for that object was likely to infer or misinfer its location. Older children (mean age: 5 years 3 months) offered information in a selective fashion: If the location of the hidden object could be readily inferred by their conversation partner, they indicated its location only when explicitly asked but if its location was likely to be misinferred, they often indicated that location prior to being explicitly asked. The response pattern of younger children (mean age: 3 years 6 months) was less conclusive. A relatively large number of younger children took matters "into their own hands" and immediately grasped for the concealed object, irrespective of whether its location could be readily inferred. However, the reactions of the remaining 3-year-olds suggest that even at this age children may be sensitive to the likely beliefs of their conversation partner. © 1999 The International Society for the Study of Behavioural Development
