{BOAO Photometric Survey of Galactic Open Clusters. II. Physical Parameters of 12 Open Clusters
We have initiated a long-term project, the BOAO photometric survey of open
clusters, to enlarge our understanding of galactic structure using UBVI CCD
photometry of open clusters which have been little studied before. This is the
second paper of the project in which we present the photometry of 12 open
clusters. We have determined the cluster parameters by fitting the Padova
isochrones to the color-magnitude diagrams of the clusters. All the clusters
except for Be 0 and NGC 1348 are found to be intermediate-age to old (0.2 - 4.0
Gyrs) open clusters with a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = 0.0.Comment: 11 page
Renal Hyperfiltration and the Development of Microalbuminuria in Type 1 Diabetes
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine prospectively whether renal hyperfiltration is associated with the development of microalbuminuria in patients with type 1 diabetes, after taking into account known risk factors. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The study group comprised 426 participants with normoalbuminuria from the First Joslin Kidney Study, followed for 15 years. Glomerular filtration rate was estimated by serum cystatin C, and hyperfiltration was defined as exceeding the 97.5th percentile of the sex-specific distribution of a similarly aged, nondiabetic population (134 and 149 ml/min per 1.73 m2 for men and women, respectively). The outcome was time to microalbuminuria development (multiple albumin excretion rate >30 μg/min). Hazard ratios (HRs) for microalbuminuria were calculated at 5, 10, and 15 years. RESULTS: Renal hyperfiltration was present in 24% of the study group and did not increase the risk of developing microalbuminuria. The unadjusted HR for microalbuminuria comparing those with and without hyperfiltration at baseline was 0.8 (95% CI 0.4–1.7) during the first 5 years, 1.0 (0.6–1.7) during the first 10 years, and 0.8 (0.5–1.4) during 15 years of follow-up. The model adjusted for baseline known risk factors including A1C, age at diagnosis of diabetes, diabetes duration, and cigarette smoking resulted in similar HRs. In addition, incorporating changes in hyperfiltration status during follow-up had minimal impact on the HRs for microalbuminuria. CONCLUSION;S Renal hyperfiltration does not have an impact on the development of microalbuminuria in type 1 diabetes during 5, 10, or 15 years of follow-up.National Institutes of Health Grant (DK 041526
Plants in the Tapestry (Literally)
Among our studies of ancient Peruvian textiles created in tapestry technique, we have come across some surprising elements, both in the warp and the weft. Andean textiles created over the past 10,000 years have been preserved in certain locations along the Pacific desert coast. They are usually preserved in the cloth bundles that protect and adorn the dead, and composed of fibers from native cotton varieties of Amazonian ancestry, the hair of highland ancestors of today’s llama and alpaca, maguey leaves from the mid-valley canyons, and reeds from coastal marshes. Garment forms, techniques and imagery can indicate textiles produced in different regions of the coast, or produced in the highlands and later deposited in lowland contexts.
In a survey of 450 textiles of all historic periods from sites in the greater Ica region, two objects stand out based on their use of unspun elements of vegetable origin in a tapestry structure. The plant parts are dissimilar, as are the species present, and the way in which they are used. In one case, the unusual elements are used strategically and seem related to object function, while in the other case the choice may have been purely aesthetic. One object is approximately 1000 years old, while the other is over 2000 years old. We present them in the contexts of the textile traditions from which they come, and whose rules they appear to break
Evolving Strategies, Opportunistic Implementation: HIV Risk Reduction in Tanzania in the Context of an Incentive-Based HIV Prevention Intervention.

Behavior change communication (BCC) interventions, while still a necessary component of HIV prevention, have not on their own been shown to be sufficient to stem the tide of the epidemic. The shortcomings of BCC interventions are partly due to barriers arising from structural or economic constraints. Arguments are being made for combination prevention packages that include behavior change, biomedical, and structural interventions to address the complex set of risk factors that may lead to HIV infection. In 2009/2010 we conducted 216 in-depth interviews with a subset of study participants enrolled in the RESPECT study - an HIV prevention trial in Tanzania that used cash awards to incentivize safer sexual behaviors. We analyzed community diaries to understand how the study was perceived in the community. We drew on these data to enhance our understanding of how the intervention influenced strategies for risk reduction. We found that certain situations provide increased leverage for sexual negotiation, and these situations facilitated opportunistic implementation of risk reduction strategies. Opportunities enabled by the RESPECT intervention included leveraging conditional cash awards, but participants also emphasized the importance of exploiting new health status knowledge from regular STI testing. Risk reduction strategies included condom use within partnerships and/or with other partners, and an unexpected emphasis on temporary abstinence. Our results highlight the importance of increasing opportunities for implementing risk reduction strategies. We found that an incentive-based intervention could be effective in part by creating such opportunities, particularly among groups such as women with limited sexual agency. The results provide new evidence that expanding regular testing of STIs is another important mechanism for providing opportunities for negotiating behavior change, beyond the direct benefits of testing. Exploiting the latent demand for STI testing should receive renewed attention as part of innovative new combination interventions for HIV prevention.\u

A crystallographic and theoretical study of an (E)-2-Hydroxyiminoethanone derivative: prediction of cyclooxygenase inhibition selectivity of stilbenoids by MM-PBSA and the role of atomic charge
We recently reported that a hydroxyiminoethanone derivative behaves as a highly selective COX-1 inhibitor (COX-1 SI= 833), and also an interesting scaffold with unique characteristics. In the current study, a comprehensive crystallographic and computational study was performed to elucidate its conformational stability and pharmacological activity. Its conformational energy was studied at the B3LYP/6-311G** level of theory and compared to the single-crystal X-ray data. In addition, computational studies of three structurally different stilbenoid derivatives used as selective COX-1 or COX-2 inhibitors were performed to predict their COX selectivity potentials. Flexible docking was performed for all compounds at the active site of both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes by considering some of the key residues as flexible during the docking operation. In the next step, molecular dynamic simulation and binding free energy calculations were performed by MM-PBSA. Final results were found to be highly dependent on the atomic charges of the inhibitors and the choice of force field used to calculate the atomic charges. The binding conformation of the hydroxyiminoethanone derivative is highly correlated with the type of COX isoform inhibited. Our predictive approach can truly predict the cyclooxygenase inhibition selectivity of stilbenoid inhibitors
Limitations in Predicting the Space Radiation Health Risk for Exploration Astronauts
Despite years of research, understanding of the space radiation environment
and the risk it poses to long-duration astronauts remains limited. There is a
disparity between research results and observed empirical effects seen in human
astronaut crews, likely due to the numerous factors that limit terrestrial
simulation of the complex space environment and extrapolation of human clinical
consequences from varied animal models. Given the intended future of human
spaceflight, with efforts now to rapidly expand capabilities for human missions
to the moon and Mars, there is a pressing need to improve upon the
understanding of the space radiation risk, predict likely clinical outcomes of
interplanetary radiation exposure, and develop appropriate and effective
mitigation strategies for future missions. To achieve this goal, the space
radiation and aerospace community must recognize the historical limitations of
radiation research and how such limitations could be addressed in future
research endeavors. We have sought to highlight the numerous factors that limit
understanding of the risk of space radiation for human crews and to identify
ways in which these limitations could be addressed for improved understanding
