Harmonic balance surrogate-based immunity modeling of a nonlinear analog circuit

    Get PDF
A novel harmonic balance surrogate-based technique to create fast and accurate behavioral models predicting, in the early design stage, the performance of nonlinear analog devices during immunity tests is presented. The obtained immunity model hides the real netlist, reduces the simulation time, and avoids expensive and time-consuming measurements after tape-out, while still providing high accuracy. The model can easily be integrated into a circuit simulator together with additional subcircuits, e.g., board and package models, as such allowing to efficiently reproduce complete immunity test setups during the early design stage and without disclosing any intellectual property. The novel method is validated by means of application to an industrial case study, being an automotive voltage regulator, clearly showing the technique's capabilities and practical advantages

Enteral Vancomycin to Eliminate MRSA Carriership of the Digestive Tract in Critically Ill Patients

Background: Carriership with methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a risk for the development of secondary infections in critically ill patients. Previous studies suggest that enteral vancomycin is able to eliminate enteral carriership with MRSA. Data on individual effects of this treatment are lacking. Methods: Retrospective analysis of a database containing 15 year data of consecutive patients from a mixed medical-(cardio)surgical 18 bedded intensive care unit was conducted. All consecutive critically ill patients with enteral MRSA carriership detected in throat and/or rectal samples were collected. We analyzed those with follow-up cultures to determine the success rate of enteral vancomycin. Topical application of 2% vancomycin in a sticky oral paste was performed combined with a vancomycin solution of 500 mg four times daily in the nasogastric tube. This treatment was added to a regimen of selective digestive tract decontamination (SDD) to prevent ICU acquired infection. Results: Thirteen patients were included. The mean age was 65 years and the median APACHE II score was 21. MRSA was present in the throat in 8 patients and in both throat and rectum in 5 patients. In all patients MRSA was successfully eliminated from both throat and rectum, which took 2–11 days with a median duration until decontamination of 4 days. Secondary infections with MRSA did not occur. Conclusions: Topical treatment with vancomycin in a 2% sticky oral paste four times daily in the nasogastric tube was effective in all patients in the elimination of MRSA and prevented secondary MRSA infections

Searching for z ~ 6 Objects with the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys: Preliminary Analysis of a Deep Parallel Field

Recent results suggest that z ~ 6 marks the end of the reionization era. A large sample of objects at z ~ 6, therefore, will be of enormous importance, as it will enable us to observationally determine the exact epoch of the reionization and the sources that are responsible for it. With the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) coming on line, we now have an unique opportunity to discover a significant number of objects at z ~ 6. The pure parallel mode implemented for the Wide Field Camera (WFC) has greatly enhanced this ability. We present our preliminary analysis of a deep ACS/WFC parallel field at |b|=74.4^o. We find 30 plausible z ~ 6 candidates, all of which have S/N > 7 in the F850LP-band. The major source of contamination could be faint Galactic cool dwarfs, and we estimated that they would contribute at most 4 objects to our candidate list. We derived the cumulative number density of galaxies at 6.0 <= z <= 6.5 as 2.3 arcmin^{-2} to a limit of 28.0 mag in the F850LP-band, which is slightly higher than our prediction. If this is not due to an underestimated contamination rate, it could possibly imply that the faint-end slope of the z ~ 6 luminosity function is steeper than alpha=-1.6. At the very least, our result suggests that galaxies with L<L^* do exist in significant number at z ~ 6 and they could be the major sources that contributed to the reionizing photons.Comment: accepted for publication in the ApJL; replaced with slightly modified versio

Redefining Therapeutic Outcomes of Depression Treatment

    Get PDF
Responses to evidence-based interventions for depression are divergent: Some patients benefit more than others during treatment and some do not benefit at all or even deteriorate. Tailoring interventions to the individual may improve outcomes. However, such personalization of evidence-based treatment in depression requires investigation of individual outcomes and the individual trajectories towards these outcomes. This theoretical paper provides a critical reflection on individual outcomes of depression treatment. First, it is argued that outcomes should be broadened, from a focus on mainly depressive symptomatology to recovery in different domains. It is acknowledged that recovery from depression reflects a personal journey that differs from person to person. Second, outcome measures should be lengthened beyond the acute treatment phase, taking a lifetime perspective on depression. The challenge then is to discover which trajectories of what measures during what interventions result in personalized sustainable recovery and for whom. Routine outcome monitoring systems may be used to inform this quest towards assessment of personalized sustainable therapeutic outcomes. Adaptations to broaden and lengthen measurements in routine outcome monitoring systems are proposed to identify predictors of personalized sustainable recovery. Routine outcome monitoring systems may eventually be used to implement personalized treatments for depression that result in personalized sustainable recovery

Surveillance at sea: The transactional politics of border control in the Aegean

The relationship between vision and action is a key element of both practices and conceptualizations of border surveillance in Europe. This article engages with what we call the ‘operative vision’ of surveillance at sea, specifically as performed by the border control apparatus in the Aegean. We analyse the political consequences of this operative vision by elaborating on three examples of fieldwork conducted in the Aegean and on the islands of Chios and Lesbos. One of the main aims is to bring the figure of the migrant back into the study of border technologies. By combining insights from science and technology studies with border, mobility and security studies, the article distinguishes between processes of intervention, mobilization and realization and emphasizes the role of migrants in their encounter with surveillance operations. Two claims are brought forward. First, engaging with recent scholarly work on the visual politics of border surveillance, we circumscribe an ongoing ‘transactional politics’. Second, the dynamic interplay between vision and action brings about a situation of ‘recalcitrance’, in which mobile objects and subjects of various kinds are drawn into securitized relations, for instance in encounters between coast guard boats and migrant boats at sea. Without reducing migrants to epiphenomena of those relations, this recalcitrance typifies the objects of surveillance as both relatable as well as resistant, particularly in the tensions between border control and search and rescue
