Broadband power amplifier tube: Klystron tube 5K70SK-WBT and step tuner VA-1470S

    Get PDF
The design concept, the fabrication, and the acceptance testing of a wide band Klystron tube and remotely controlled step tuner for channel selection are discussed. The equipment was developed for the modification of an existing 20 KW Power Amplifier System which was provided to the contractor as GFE. The replacement Klystron covers a total frequency range of 2025 to 2120 MHz and is tuneable to six (6) each channel with a band width of 22 MHz or greater per channel. A 5 MHz overlap is provided between channels. Channels are selected at the control panel located in the front of the Klystron magnet or from one of three remote control stations connected in parallel with the step tuner. Included in this final report are the results of acceptance tests conducted at the vendor's plant and of the integrated system tests

Black Extended Objects, Naked Singularities and P-Branes

We treat the horizons of charged, dilaton black extended objects as quantum mechanical objects. We show that the S matrix for such an object can be written in terms of a p-brane-like action. The requirements of unitarity of the S matrix and positivity of the p-brane tension equivalent severely restrict the number of space-time dimensions and the allowed values of the dilaton parameter a. Generally, black objects transform at the extremal limit into p-branes.Comment: 9 pages, REVTE

Parrondo-like behavior in continuous-time random walks with memory

    Get PDF
The Continuous-Time Random Walk (CTRW) formalism can be adapted to encompass stochastic processes with memory. In this article we will show how the random combination of two different unbiased CTRWs can give raise to a process with clear drift, if one of them is a CTRW with memory. If one identifies the other one as noise, the effect can be thought as a kind of stochastic resonance. The ultimate origin of this phenomenon is the same of the Parrondo's paradox in game theoryComment: 8 pages, 3 figures, revtex; enlarged and revised versio

Small Energy Scale for Mixed-Valent Uranium Materials

We investigate a two-channel Anderson impurity model with a 5f15f^1 magnetic and a 5f25f^2 quadrupolar ground doublet, and a 5f25f^2 excited triplet. Using the numerical renormalization group method, we find a crossover to a non-Fermi liquid state below a temperature T∗T^* varying as the 5f25f^2 triplet-doublet splitting to the 7/2 power. To within numerical accuracy, the non-linear magnetic susceptibility and the 5f15f^1 contribution to the linear susceptibility are given by universal one-parameter scaling functions. These results may explain UBe13_{13} as mixed valent with a small crossover scale T∗T^*.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, REVTeX, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let

Downwelled longwave surface irradiance data from five sites for the FIRE/SRB Wisconsin Experiment from October 12 through November 2, 1986

Tables are presented which show data from five sites in the First ISCCP (International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project) Regional Experiment (FIRE)/Surface Radiation Budget (SRB) Wisconsin experiment regional from October 12 through November 2, 1986. A discussion of intercomparison results is also included. The field experiment was conducted for the purposes of both intensive cirrus-cloud measurements and SRB algorithm validation activities

Forensic investigations of popular ephemeral messaging applications on Android and iOS platforms

    Get PDF
Ephemeral messaging applications are growing increasingly popular on the digital mobile market. However, they are not always used with good intentions. Criminals may see a gateway into private communication with each other through this transient application data. This could negatively impact criminal court cases for evidence, or civil matters. To find out if messages from such applications can indeed be recovered or not, a forensic examination of the device would be required by the law enforcement authority. This paper reports mobile forensic investigations of ephemeral data from a wide range of applications using both proprietary and freeware forensic tools. Both Android and iOS platforms were used in the investigation. The results from the investigation uncovered various artefacts from the iOS device including account information, contacts, and evidence of communication between users. The Android device uncovered evidence of communications, and several media files assumed to be deleted within a storage cache in the Android file system. The forensic tools used within the investigations were evaluated using parameters from the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) mobile tool test assertions and test plan

Research on solar pumped liquid lasers

    Get PDF
A solar pumped liquid laser that can be scaled up to high power (10Mw CW) for space applications was developed. Liquid lasers have the inherent advantage over gases in that they provide much higher lasant densities and thus high power densities. Liquids also have inherent advantages over solids in that they have much higher damage thresholds and are much cheaper to produce for large scale applications. Among the liquid laser media that are potential candidates for solar pumping, the POC13:Nd(3+):ZrC14 liquid was chosen for its high intrinsic efficiency as well as its relatively good stability against decomposition due to protic contamination. The development and testing of the laser liquid and the development of a large solar concentrator to pump the laser was emphasized. The procedure to manufacture the laser liquid must include diagnostic tests of the solvent purity (from protic contamination) at various stages in the production process

Magnetically Robust Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior in Heavy Fermion Systems with f^2-Configuration: Competition between Crystalline-Electric-Field and Kondo-Yosida Singlets

We study a magnetic field effect on the Non-Fermi Liquid (NFL) which arises around the quantum critical point (QCP) due to the competition between the f^2-crystalline-electric-field singlet and the Kondo-Yosida singlet states by using the numerical renormalization ground method. We show the characteristic temperature T_F^*, corresponding to a peak of a specific heat, is not affected by the magnetic field up to H_z^* which is determined by the distance from the QCP or characteristic energy scales of each singlet states. As a result, in the vicinity of QCP, there are parameter regions where the NFL is robust against the magnetic field, at an observable temperature range T > T_F^*, up to H_z^* which is far larger than T_F^* and less than min(T_{K2}, $Delta).Comment: 8 pages, 9 figur

Archaic mitochondrial DNA inserts in modern day nuclear genomes

    No full text
Traces of interbreeding of Neanderthals and Denisovans with modern humans in the form of archaic DNA have been detected in the genomes of present-day human populations outside sub-Saharan Africa. Up to now, only nuclear archaic DNA has been detected in modern humans; we therefore attempted to identify archaic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) residing in modern human nuclear genomes as nuclear inserts of mitochondrial DNA (NUMTs)
