Hybrid hydrogen-battery systems for renewable off-grid telecom power
Off-grid hybrid systems, based on the integration of hydrogen technologies (electrolysers, hydrogen stores and fuel cells) with battery and wind/solar power technologies, are proposed for satisfying the continuous power demands of telecom remote base stations. A model was developed to investigate the preferred role for electrolytic hydrogen within a hybrid system; the analysis focused on powering a 1 kW telecom load in three locations of distinct wind and solar resource availability. When compared with otherwise equivalent off-grid renewable energy systems employing only battery energy storage, the results show that the integration of a 1 kW fuel cell and a 1.6 kW electrolyser at each location is sufficient, in combination with a hydrogen storage capacity of between 13 and 31 kg, to reduce the required battery capacity by 54–77%, to increase the minimum state-of-charge from 37 to 55% to >81.5% year-round despite considerable seasonal variation in supply, and to reduce the amount of wasted renewable power by 55–79%. For the growing telecom sector, the proposed hybrid system provides a ‘green’ solution, which is preferable to shipping hydrogen or diesel to remote base stations

In-sewer field-evaluation of an optical fibre-based condition monitoring system
A Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) based monitoring system for continuous humidity and temperature measurement has been designed and evaluated experimentally in a sewer environment with high corrosion rates, humidity and the presence of gaseous hydrogen sulfide. The monitoring system has been designed specifically for field use, including packaging prepared for the harsh environment and the challenges of the operation. The system is battery powered and has hardware for controlling the interrogation equipment, power management, data logging and 4G connectivity. Results obtained show the long-term performance, over a 6-month period of non-stop monitoring of real-time data using the same probe. The data acquired was compared to the environmental data of temperature and precipitation for this period from the same location, which showed a good correlation between the expected and the measured data values. The data obtained point to the success of the optical fibre-based sensor system for monitoring in these harsh environments over long periods
Off-grid solar-hydrogen generation by passive electrolysis
A novel embodiment of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser is presented as a means for producing hydrogen off-grid by the efficient absorption of the time-varying power output of a solar photovoltaic (PV) panel or array. The balance-of-plant power load was minimised using passive design principles to ensure efficient operation under cloudy, sunset and wintry conditions. Heat generated during the electrolysis process is stored when appropriate to significantly enhance the efficiency of hydrogen production after a period of darkness. A prototype field trial demonstrated the electrolyser's ability to track closely the highly variable output of the PV year-round under a wide range of operating conditions. Hydrogen yields for various geographical locations were estimated to vary from 25 to 65 kg p.a. for a 1.6 kW electrolyser with fixed-tilt PV panels depending on local levels of solar insolation. This could be increased to over 100 kg p.a. by employing a PV panel of greater capacity and a battery for absorbing the peak generation and then discharging it overnight to the electrolyser

A charged particle in a magnetic field - Jarzynski Equality
We describe some solvable models which illustrate the Jarzynski theorem and
related fluctuation theorems. We consider a charged particle in the presence of
magnetic field in a two dimensional harmonic well. In the first case the centre
of the harmonic potential is translated with a uniform velocity, while in the
other case the particle is subjected to an ac force. We show that Jarzynski
identity complements Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem on the absence of diamagnetism in

Theory of High-Force DNA Stretching and Overstretching
Single molecule experiments on single- and double stranded DNA have sparked a
renewed interest in the force-extension of polymers. The extensible Freely
Jointed Chain (FJC) model is frequently invoked to explain the observed
behavior of single-stranded DNA. We demonstrate that this model does not
satisfactorily describe recent high-force stretching data. We instead propose a
model (the Discrete Persistent Chain, or ``DPC'') that borrows features from
both the FJC and the Wormlike Chain, and show that it resembles the data more
closely. We find that most of the high-force behavior previously attributed to
stretch elasticity is really a feature of the corrected entropic elasticity;
the true stretch compliance of single-stranded DNA is several times smaller
than that found by previous authors. Next we elaborate our model to allow
coexistence of two conformational states of DNA, each with its own stretch and
bend elastic constants. Our model is computationally simple, and gives an
excellent fit through the entire overstretching transition of nicked,
double-stranded DNA. The fit gives the first values for the elastic constants
of the stretched state. In particular we find the effective bend stiffness for
DNA in this state to be about 10 nm*kbt, a value quite different from either

A non-symmetric Yang-Baxter Algebra for the Quantum Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Model
We study certain non-symmetric wavefunctions associated to the quantum
nonlinear Schr\"odinger model, introduced by Komori and Hikami using Gutkin's
propagation operator, which involves representations of the degenerate affine
Hecke algebra. We highlight how these functions can be generated using a
vertex-type operator formalism similar to the recursion defining the symmetric
(Bethe) wavefunction in the quantum inverse scattering method. Furthermore,
some of the commutation relations encoded in the Yang-Baxter equation for the

Ecological criteria for evaluation candidate sites for marine reserves
Several schemes have been developed to help select the locations of marine reserves. All of them combine social, economic, and biological criteria, and few offer any guidance as to how to prioritize among the criteria identified. This can imply that the relative weights given to different criteria are unimportant. Where two sites are of equal value ecologically, then socioeconomic criteria should dominate the choice of which should be protected. However, in many cases, socioeconomic criteria are given equal or greater weight than ecological considerations in the choice of sites. This can lead to selection of reserves with little biological value that fail to meet many of the desired objectives. To avoid such a possibility, we develop a series of criteria that allow preliminary evaluation of candidate sites according to their relative biological values in advance of the application of socioeconomic criteria. We include criteria that, while not strictly biological, have a strong influence on the species present or ecological processes. Our scheme enables sites to be assessed according to their biodiversity, the processes which underpin that diversity, and the processes that support fisheries and provide a spectrum of other services important to people. Criteria that capture biodiversity values include biogeographic representation, habitat representation and heterogeneity, and presence of species or populations of special interest (e.g., threatened species). Criteria that capture sustainability of biodiversity and fishery values include the size of reserves necessary to protect viable habitats, presence of exploitable species, vulnerable life stages, connectivity among reserves, links among ecosystems, and provision of ecosystem services to people. Criteria measuring human and natural threats enable candidate sites to be eliminated from consideration if risks are too great, but also help prioritize among sites where threats can be mitigated by protection. While our criteria can be applied to the design of reserve networks, they also enable choice of single reserves to be made in the context of the attributes of existing protected areas. The overall goal of our scheme is to promote the development of reserve networks that will maintain biodiversity and ecosystem functioning at large scales. The values of ecosystem goods and services for people ultimately depend on meeting this objective
Dynamical aspects of inextensible chains
In the present work the dynamics of a continuous inextensible chain is
studied. The chain is regarded as a system of small particles subjected to
constraints on their reciprocal distances. It is proposed a treatment of
systems of this kind based on a set Langevin equations in which the noise is
characterized by a non-gaussian probability distribution. The method is
explained in the case of a freely hinged chain. In particular, the generating
functional of the correlation functions of the relevant degrees of freedom
which describe the conformations of this chain is derived. It is shown that in
the continuous limit this generating functional coincides with a model of an
inextensible chain previously discussed by one of the authors of this work.
Next, the approach developed here is applied to a inextensible chain, called
the freely jointed bar chain, in which the basic units are small extended
objects. The generating functional of the freely jointed bar chain is
constructed. It is shown that it differs profoundly from that of the freely
hinged chain. Despite the differences, it is verified that in the continuous
