    The VAS Demonstration (VISSR Atmospheric Sounder) is a project designed to evaluate the VAS instrument as a remote sensor of the Earth's atmosphere and surface. This report describes the instrument and ground processing system, the instrument performance, the valiation as a temperature and moisture profiler compared with ground truth and other satellites, and assesses its performance as a valuable meteorological tool. The report also addresses the availability of data for scientific research

    Design and analysis of the radiator structure for space power systems

    The design, analysis, fabrication, and development of the 5-kWe radiator structure are shown. Thermal performance, meteoroid protection, structural capability during launch, development testing and space operation, material evaluation, and the configuration selection are described. The fin-tube development program depends on the relative values of the thermal coefficients of expansion. The initial selection of aluminum fins and Type 316 stainless-steel tubes was based on previous experience; however, the large differential in their expansion rates showed that an alternate, more compatible, combination was needed. Copper, stainless-steel-clad copper, boron-impregnated aluminum, and an independent radiator with a titanium structure were all considered as alternate materials. The final selection was Lockalloy fins with Type 304 stainless-steel D tubes

    Apparent suppression of turbulent magnetic dynamo action by a dc magnetic field

    Numerical studies of the effect of a dc magnetic field on dynamo action (development of magnetic fields with large spatial scales), due to helically-driven magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, are reported. The apparent effect of the dc magnetic field is to suppress the dynamo action, above a relatively low threshold. However, the possibility that the suppression results from an improper combination of rectangular triply spatially-periodic boundary conditions and a uniform dc magnetic field is addressed: heretofore a common and convenient computational convention in turbulence investigations. Physical reasons for the observed suppression are suggested. Other geometries and boundary conditions are offered for which the dynamo action is expected not to be suppressed by the presence of a dc magnetic field component.Comment: To appear in Physics of Plasma

    Velocity field distributions due to ideal line vortices

    We evaluate numerically the velocity field distributions produced by a bounded, two-dimensional fluid model consisting of a collection of parallel ideal line vortices. We sample at many spatial points inside a rigid circular boundary. We focus on ``nearest neighbor'' contributions that result from vortices that fall (randomly) very close to the spatial points where the velocity is being sampled. We confirm that these events lead to a non-Gaussian high-velocity ``tail'' on an otherwise Gaussian distribution function for the Eulerian velocity field. We also investigate the behavior of distributions that do not have equilibrium mean-field probability distributions that are uniform inside the circle, but instead correspond to both higher and lower mean-field energies than those associated with the uniform vorticity distribution.     Hyperk\"ahler Arnold Conjecture and its Generalizations

    We generalize and refine the hyperk\"ahler Arnold conjecture, which was originally established, in the non-degenerate case, for three-dimensional time by Hohloch, Noetzel and Salamon by means of hyperk\"ahler Floer theory. In particular, we prove the conjecture in the case where the time manifold is a multidimensional torus and also establish the degenerate version of the conjecture. Our method relies on Morse theory for generating functions and a finite-dimensional reduction along the lines of the Conley-Zehnder proof of the Arnold conjecture for the torus.Comment: 13 page
