The limits of process: On (re)reading Henri Bergson
This article offers a reading of the work of Henri Bergson as it pertains to organizations through the lens of ideas drawn from critical realism. It suggests an alternative to interpretations based on a stark division between process and realist perspectives. Much of the existing literature presents a rather partial view of Bergson’s work. A review suggests some interesting parallels with themes in critical realism, notably the emergence of mind. Critical realism has a focus on process at its heart, but is also concerned with how the products of such processes become stabilized and form the conditions for action. This suggests that attention might usefully be paid to the relationship between organizational action and the sedimented practices grouped under the heading of ‘routines’. More attention to Bergson’s account of the relationship between instinct, intuition and intelligence provides a link to the social character of thought, something which can be mapped on to Archer’s work on reflexivity and the ‘internal conversation’. This suggests that our analyses need to pay attention to both memory and history, to building and dwelling, rather than the one-sided focus found in some process theory accounts
Electronic properties of Fabre charge-transfer salts under various temperature and pressure conditions
Using density functional theory, we determine parameters of tight-binding
Hamiltonians for a variety of Fabre charge transfer salts, focusing in
particular on the effects of temperature and pressure. Besides relying on
previously published crystal structures, we experimentally determine two new
sets of structures; (TMTTF)SbF at different temperatures and
(TMTTF)PF at various pressures. We find that a few trends in the
electronic behavior can be connected to the complex phase diagram shown by
these materials. Decreasing temperature and increasing pressure cause the
systems to become more two-dimensional. We analyze the importance of
correlations by considering an extended Hubbard model parameterized using
Wannier orbital overlaps and show that while charge order is strongly activated
by the inter-site Coulomb interaction, the magnetic order is only weakly
enhanced. Both orders are suppressed when the effective pressure is increased.Comment: 12 pages, 16 figure

Observations are reported of the J = 2→1 transitions of CO and 12C18O at 230 and 219 GHz respectively from a number of galactic sources. A map of the central 1/2° × 1/2° of the Orion A molecular cloud is presented. The spectra are interpreted to derive molecular densities and abundance ratios in the molecular clouds observed
www.common-metrics.org: a web application to estimate scores from different patient-reported outcome measures on a common scale
BACKGROUND: Recently, a growing number of Item-Response Theory (IRT) models has been published, which allow estimation of a common latent variable from data derived by different Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs). When using data from different PROs, direct estimation of the latent variable has some advantages over the use of sum score conversion tables. It requires substantial proficiency in the field of psychometrics to fit such models using contemporary IRT software. We developed a web application ( http://www.common-metrics.org ), which allows estimation of latent variable scores more easily using IRT models calibrating different measures on instrument independent scales.
RESULTS: Currently, the application allows estimation using six different IRT models for Depression, Anxiety, and Physical Function. Based on published item parameters, users of the application can directly estimate latent trait estimates using expected a posteriori (EAP) for sum scores as well as for specific response patterns, Bayes modal (MAP), Weighted likelihood estimation (WLE) and Maximum likelihood (ML) methods and under three different prior distributions. The obtained estimates can be downloaded and analyzed using standard statistical software.
CONCLUSIONS: This application enhances the usability of IRT modeling for researchers by allowing comparison of the latent trait estimates over different PROs, such as the Patient Health Questionnaire Depression (PHQ-9) and Anxiety (GAD-7) scales, the Center of Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), PROMIS Anxiety and Depression Short Forms and others. Advantages of this approach include comparability of data derived with different measures and tolerance against missing values. The validity of the underlying models needs to be investigated in the future
Teleological Essentialism
Placeholder essentialism is the view that there is a causal essence that holds category members together, though we may not know what the essence is. Sometimes the placeholder can be filled in by scientific essences, such as when we acquire scientific knowledge that the atomic weight of gold is 79. We challenge the view that placeholders are elaborated by scientific essences. On our view, if placeholders are elaborated, they are elaborated Aristotelian essences, a telos. Utilizing the same kinds of experiments used by traditional essentialists—involving superficial change (study 1), transformation of insides (study 2), acquired traits (study 3) and inferences about offspring (study 4)—we find support for the view that essences are elaborated by a telos. And we find evidence (study 5) that teleological essences may generate category judgments
Creation and manipulation of Feshbach resonances with radio-frequency radiation
We present a simple technique for studying collisions of ultracold atoms in
the presence of a magnetic field and radio-frequency radiation (rf). Resonant
control of scattering properties can be achieved by using rf to couple a
colliding pair of atoms to a bound state. We show, using the example of 6Li,
that in some ranges of rf frequency and magnetic field this can be done without
giving rise to losses. We also show that halo molecules of large spatial extent
require much less rf power than deeply bound states. Another way to exert
resonant control is with a set of rf-coupled bound states, linked to the
colliding pair through the molecular interactions that give rise to
magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances. This was recently demonstrated for
87Rb [Kaufman et al., Phys. Rev. A 80:050701(R), 2009]. We examine the
underlying atomic and molecular physics which made this possible. Lastly, we
consider the control that may be exerted over atomic collisions by placing
atoms in superpositions of Zeeman states, and suggest that it could be useful
where small changes in scattering length are required. We suggest other species
for which rf and magnetic field control could together provide a useful tuning

Relativistic total cross section and angular distribution for Rayleigh scattering by atomic hydrogen
We study the total cross section and angular distribution in Rayleigh
scattering by hydrogen atom in the ground state, within the framework of Dirac
relativistic equation and second-order perturbation theory. The relativistic
states used for the calculations are obtained by making use of the finite basis
set method and expressed in terms of B-splines and B-polynomials. We pay
particular attention to the effects that arise from higher (non-dipole) terms
in the expansion of the electron-photon interaction. It is shown that the
angular distribution of scattered photons, while it is symmetric with respect
to the scattering angle =90 within the electric dipole
approximation, becomes asymmetric when higher multipoles are taken into
account. The analytical expression of the angular distribution is parametrized
in terms of Legendre polynomials. Detailed calculations are performed for
photons in the energy range 0.5 to 10 keV. When possible, results are compared

Observation and theoretical description of the pure Fano-effect in the valence-band photo-emission of ferromagnets
The pure Fano-effect in angle-integrated valence-band photo-emission of
ferromagnets has been observed for the first time. A contribution of the
intrinsic spin polarization to the spin polarization of the photo-electrons has
been avoided by an appropriate choice of the experimental parameters. The
theoretical description of the resulting spectra reveals a complete analogy to
the Fano-effect observed before for paramagnetic transition metals. While the
theoretical photo-current and spin difference spectra are found in good
quantitative agreement with experiment in the case of Fe and Co only a
qualitative agreement could be achieved in the case of Ni by calculations on
the basis of plain local spin density approximation (LSDA). Agreement with
experimental data could be improved in this case in a very substantial way by a
treatment of correlation effects on the basis of dynamical mean field theory

Seeing the smart city on Twitter: Colour and the affective territories of becoming smart
This paper pays attention to the immense and febrile field of digital image files which picture the smart city as they circulate on the social media platform Twitter. The paper considers tweeted images as an affective field in which flow and colour are especially generative. This luminescent field is territorialised into different, emergent forms of becoming ‘smart’. The paper identifies these territorialisations in two ways: firstly, by using the data visualisation software ImagePlot to create a visualisation of 9030 tweeted images related to smart cities; and secondly, by responding to the affective pushes of the image files thus visualised. It identifies two colours and three ways of affectively becoming smart: participating in smart, learning about smart, and anticipating smart, which are enacted with different distributions of mostly orange and blue images. The paper thus argues that debates about the power relations embedded in the smart city should consider the particular affective enactment of being smart that happens via social media. More generally, the paper concludes that geographers must pay more attention to the diverse and productive vitalities of social media platforms in urban life and that this will require experiment with methods that are responsive to specific digital qualities
