Physics at COSY
The COSY accelerator in J\'ulich is presented together with its internal and
external detectors. The physics programme performed recently is discussed with
emphasis on strangeness physics.Comment: Invited talk given at the "10th International Symposium on

PATENT LICENSING BY MEANS OF AN AUCTION: INTERNAL VS. EXTERNAL PATENTEE
An independent research laboratory owns a patented process innovation that can be licensed by means of an auction to two Cournot duopolists producing differentiated goods. For large innovations and close enough substitute goods the patentee auctions o¤ only one license, preventing the full diffusion of the innovation. For this range of parameters, however, if the laboratory merged with one of the firms in the industry, full technology diffusion would be implemented as the merged entity would always license the innovation to the rival firm. This explains that, in this context, a vertical merger is both profitable and welfare improving.Patent licensing, two-part tariff contracts, vertical mergers
A possible explanation for the inconsistency between the Giotto grain mass distribution and ground-based observations
Giotto measured the in situ Halley dust grain mass distribution with 2 instruments, Particle Impact Analyzer and Dust Impact Detection System (DIDSY), as well as the total intercepted mass from the deceleration of the spacecraft (Giotto Radio-Science Experiment, GRE). Ground based observations made shortly before encounter have fluxes much higher than would be predicted from Giotto data. It is concluded that Giotto DIDSY and GRE data represent observations of dust originating from a narrow track along the nucleus. They are consistent with ground based data, if assumptions are made about the level of activity along this track. The actual size distribution that should be used for modeling of the whole coma should not include the large mass excess actually observed by Giotto. Extrapolation of the small grain data should be used, since for these grains the velocity dispersion is low and temporal changes at the nucleus would not affect the shape of the mass distribution
Disturbances in the spontaneous attribution of social meaning in schizophrenia
Background. Schizophrenia patients show disturbances on a range of tasks that assess mentalizing or 'Theory of Mind' (ToM). However, these tasks are often developmentally inappropriate, make large demands on verbal abilities and explicit problem-solving skills, and involve after-the-fact reflection as opposed to spontaneous mentalizing.
Method. To address these limitations, 55 clinically stable schizophrenia out-patients and 44 healthy controls completed a validated Animations Task designed to assess spontaneous attributions of social meaning to ambiguous
abstract visual stimuli. In this paradigm, 12 animations depict two geometric shapes' interacting' with each other in three conditions: (1) ToM interactions that elicit attributions of mental states to the agents, (2) Goal-Directed (GO) interactions that elicit attributions of simple actions, and (3) Random scenes in which no interaction occurs. Verbal
descriptions of each animation are rated for the degree of Intentionality attributed to the agents and for accuracy.
Results. Patients had lower Intentionality ratings than controls for ToM and GO scenes but the groups did not significantly differ for Random scenes. The descriptions of the patients less closely matched the situations intended by the developers of the task. Within the schizophrenia group, performance on the Animations Task showed minimal
associations with clinical symptoms.
Conclusions. Patients demonstrated disturbances in the spontaneous attribution of mental states to abstract visual stimuli that normally evoke such attributions. Hence, in addition to previously established impairment on mentalizing tasks that require logical inferences about others' mental states, individuals with schizophrenia show disturbances in implicit aspects of mentalizing
Extremal Black Attractors in 8D Maximal Supergravity
Motivated by the new higher D-supergravity solutions on intersecting
attractors obtained by Ferrara et al. in [Phys.Rev.D79:065031-2009], we focus
in this paper on 8D maximal supergravity with moduli space
[SL(3,R)/SO(3)]x[SL(2,R)/SO(2)] and study explicitly the attractor mechanism
for various configurations of extremal black p- branes (anti-branes) with the
typical near horizon geometries AdS_{p+2}xS^{m}xT^{6-p-m} and p=0,1,2,3,4;
2<=m<=6. Interpretations in terms of wrapped M2 and M5 branes of the 11D
M-theory on 3-torus are also given.
