Introduction of artificial pinning centres in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 ceramics
Considering the phase equilibrium diagram of the system Bi203-SrO-CaO-CuO, single phase 'Bi2Sr2CaCu208' ceramics have been transformed by a simple annealing procedure into multiphase samples. The transformation results in the formation of second phases and in an increase of the intra-grain critical current density at 1 T of five times. This increase is believed to express improved pinning properties of the superconducting crystals. The prepared pinning centers are believed to be e.g. coherent precipitates (Guinier-Preston-zones) within the superconducting crystals
Thermodynamics of pairing in mesoscopic systems
Using numerical and analytical methods implemented for different models we
conduct a systematic study of thermodynamic properties of pairing correlation
in mesoscopic nuclear systems. Various quantities are calculated and analyzed
using the exact solution of pairing. An in-depth comparison of canonical, grand
canonical, and microcanonical ensemble is conducted. The nature of the pairing
phase transition in a small system is of a particular interest. We discuss the
onset of discontinuity in the thermodynamic variables, fluctuations, and
evolution of zeros of the canonical and grand canonical partition functions in
the complex plane. The behavior of the Invariant Correlational Entropy is also
studied in the transitional region of interest. The change in the character of
the phase transition due to the presence of magnetic field is discussed along
with studies of superconducting thermodynamics.Comment: 19 pages, 24 figure
Classification of the Nuclear Multifragmentation Phase Transition
Using a recently proposed classification scheme for phase transitions in
finite systems [Phys.Rev.Lett.{\bf 84},3511 (2000)] we show that within the
statistical standard model of nuclear multifragmentation the predicted phase

Teacher Bias : Determinants of Observational Reliability
A survey of some of the literature relevant to behavioral observation in the experimental analysis of behavior is presented. There is a general lack of agreement whether experimenter effects (observer bias, observer expectancies, etc.) generally affect the outcome of behavioral research. The plan of the present study was to demonstrate the degree of these effects as it operates in prospective and experienced teachers. The teachers observed the same film of one child’s behavior under different alleged background information after half of the subjects had previously demonstrated that they could objectively observe and record behavior. The two by three factorial randomized group design was employed in the analysis. The results showed no differentiating effects of false treatment instructions (background information). It was concluded that experimenter effects are not as general as some writers contend and do not seem to apply to teachers observing and recording studying behavior

Evaluation of depleted uranium in the environment at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland and Yuma Proving Grounds, Arizona. Final report
This report represents an evaluation of depleted uranium (DU) introduced into the environment at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds (APG), Maryland and Yuma Proving Grounds (YPG) Arizona. This was a cooperative project between the Environmental Sciences and Statistical Analyses Groups at LANL and with the Department of Fishery and Wildlife Biology at Colorado State University. The project represents a unique approach to assessing the environmental impact of DU in two dissimilar ecosystems. Ecological exposure models were created for each ecosystem and sensitivity/uncertainty analyses were conducted to identify exposure pathways which were most influential in the fate and transport of DU in the environment. Research included field sampling, field exposure experiment, and laboratory experiments. The first section addresses DU at the APG site. Chapter topics include bioenergetics-based food web model; field exposure experiments; bioconcentration by phytoplankton and the toxicity of U to zooplankton; physical processes governing the desorption of uranium from sediment to water; transfer of uranium from sediment to benthic invertebrates; spead of adsorpion by benthic invertebrates; uptake of uranium by fish. The final section of the report addresses DU at the YPG site. Chapters include the following information: Du transport processes and pathway model; field studies of performance of exposure model; uptake and elimination rates for kangaroo rates; chemical toxicity in kangaroo rat kidneys
