Generating distributed entanglement from electron currents

    Get PDF
This work is partially supported by a Royal Society University Research FellowshipSeveral recent experiments have demonstrated the viability of a passive device that can generate spin-entangled currents in two separate leads. However, manipulation and measurement of individual flying qubits in a solid state system has yet to be achieved. This is particularly difficult when a macroscopic number of these indistinguishable qubits are present. In order to access such an entangled current resource, we therefore show how to use it to generate distributed, static entanglement. The spatial separation between the entangled static pair can be much higher than that achieved by only exploiting the tunnelling effects between quantum dots. Our device is completely passive, and requires only weak Coulomb interactions between static and flying spins. We show that the entanglement generated is robust to decoherence for large enough currents.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Experimental Hamiltonian Identification for Qubits subject to Multiple Independent Control Mechanisms

    Get PDF
We consider a qubit subject to various independent control mechanisms and present a general strategy to identify both the internal Hamiltonian and the interaction Hamiltonian for each control mechanism, relying only on a single, fixed readout process such as σz\sigma_z measurements.Comment: submitted to Proceedings of the QCMC04 (4 pages RevTeX, 5 figures

Towards a Post-Structural View of Competition: Three Cases of Horizontal Merger

    Get PDF
We examine the question of adaptive firm conduct using longitudinal product-level data from three large horizontal mergers in the food manufacturing industry. Our model is grounded in a poststructural view of competition that we deduce from recent writings from the fields of strategy, organizational ecology, and industrial organization. Consistent with this model, we find that the influence of horizontal merger on product performance (i.e., rent) varies with the product niche, time, the specific firms that merged, and dominance of the product, and its market scope.Industrial Organization,

Power spectrum of mass and activity fluctuations in a sandpile

We consider a directed abelian sandpile on a strip of size 2×n2\times n, driven by adding a grain randomly at the left boundary after every TT time-steps. We establish the exact equivalence of the problem of mass fluctuations in the steady state and the number of zeroes in the ternary-base representation of the position of a random walker on a ring of size 3n3^n. We find that while the fluctuations of mass have a power spectrum that varies as 1/f1/f for frequencies in the range 32nf1/T 3^{-2n} \ll f \ll 1/T, the activity fluctuations in the same frequency range have a power spectrum that is linear in ff.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure
