Hydrodynamic modeling of traffic jams in intracellular transport in axons

    Get PDF
Irregularities in intracellular traffic in axons caused by mutations of molecular motors may lead to “traffic jams”, which often result in swelling of axons causing such neurodegenerative diseases as Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome. Hence, it is of particular interest to mathematically model the formation of traffic jams in axons. This paper adopts the hydrodynamic continuity equations for intracellular transport of organelles as developed by Smith and Simmons [1] whereas the Kerner and KonhĂ€user [2] model for traffic jams in highway traffic is applied to predict the velocity field. It is observed that combination of the two sets of equations can comprehensively predict the traffic jams in axons without the need to any additional assumption or modification

Pregnancy: Privileges and Protection in the Spanish Golden Age

Maternity protection in the Spanish Golden Age is a subject that has been only scarcely studied in this context. The objective is to find out to which extent pregnant women were considered worthy of protection, a concern that includes the closely tied aspects of body, imagination, and surrounding conditions. Matters regarding food, fasting, the «free» choice of the birthplace, and the midwife are presented by quoting a medical treatise from 1606 by Ruices de Fontecha, but also legal texts and specific illustrative cases of diverse social classes. Also, some proposed hypotheses might elucidate why the author insists on the extraordinary idea of privileges

A new strategy for Robbins' problem of optimal stopping

In this article we study the expected rank problem under full information. Our approach uses the planar Poisson approach from Gnedin (2007) to derive the expected rank of a stopping rule that is one of the simplest non-trivial examples combining rank dependent rules with threshold rules. This rule attains an expected rank lower than the best upper bounds obtained in the literature so far, in particular we obtain an expected rank of 2.32614
