    On sigma-subnormality criteria in finite sigma-soluble groups

    [EN] Let sigma = {sigma(i) : i is an element of I} be a partition of the set P of all prime numbers. A subgroup X of a finite group G is called sigma-subnormal in G if there is a chain of subgroups X = X-0 subset of X-1 subset of center dot center dot center dot subset of X-n = G where for every j = 1,..., n the subgroup X j-1 is normal in X j or X j /CoreX j ( X j-1) is a si -group for some i. I. In the special case that s is the partition of P into sets containing exactly one prime each, the sigma-subnormality reduces to the familiar case of subnormality.     Voltage controlled nuclear polarization switching in a single InGaAs quantum dot

    Sharp threshold-like transitions between two stable nuclear spin polarizations are observed in optically pumped individual InGaAs self-assembled quantum dots embedded in a Schottky diode when the bias applied to the diode is tuned. The abrupt transitions lead to the switching of the Overhauser field in the dot by up to 3 Tesla. The bias-dependent photoluminescence measurements reveal the importance of the electron-tunneling-assisted nuclear spin pumping. We also find evidence for the resonant LO-phonon-mediated electron co-tunneling, the effect controlled by the applied bias and leading to the reduction of the nuclear spin pumping rate.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys Rev

    Fast optical preparation, control, and readout of a single quantum dot spin

    We propose and demonstrate the sequential initialization, optical control, and readout of a single spin trapped in a semiconductor quantum dot. Hole spin preparation is achieved through ionization of a resonantly excited electron-hole pair. Optical control is observed as a coherent Rabi rotation between the hole and charged-exciton states, which is conditional on the initial hole spin state. The spin-selective creation of the charged exciton provides a photocurrent readout of the hole spin state. © 2008 The American Physical Society

    Deconstruction, Lattice Supersymmetry, Anomalies and Branes

    We study the realization of anomalous Ward identities in deconstructed (latticized) supersymmetric theories. In a deconstructed four-dimensional theory with N=2 supersymmetry, we show that the chiral symmetries only appear in the infrared and that the anomaly is reproduced in the usual framework of lattice perturbation theory with Wilson fermions. We then realize the theory on the world-volume of fractional D-branes on an orbifold. In this brane realization, we show how deconstructed theory anomalies can be computed via classical supergravity. Our methods and observations are more generally applicable to deconstructed/latticized supersymmetric theories in various dimensions.Comment: 1+27 pages, 2 figures, references adde

    Deconstructing Gaugino Mediation

    We present a model of supersymmetry breaking which produces gaugino masses and negligible scalar masses at a high scale. The model is inspired by ``deconstructing'' or ``latticizing'' models in extra dimensions where supersymmetry breaking and visible matter are spatially separated.     In this article, we describe giant gravitons in AdS_5 x S^5 moving along generic trajectories in AdS_5. The giant graviton dynamics is solved by proving that the D3-brane effective action reduces to that of a massive point particle in AdS_5 and therefore the solutions are in one to one correspondence with timelike geodesics of AdS_5. All these configurations are related via isometries of the background, which induce target space symmetries in the world volume theory of the D-brane. Hence, all these configurations preserve the same amount of supersymmetry as the original giant graviton, i.e. half of the maximal supersymmetry. Multiparticle configurations of two or more giant gravitons are also considered. In particular, a binary system preserving one quarter of the supersymmetries is found, providing a non trivial time-dependent supersymmetric solution.     Little Higgses from an Antisymmetric Condensate

    We construct an SU(6)/Sp(6) non-linear sigma model in which the Higgses arise as pseudo-Goldstone bosons. There are two Higgs doublets whose masses have no one-loop quadratic sensitivity to the cutoff of the effective theory, which can be at around 10 TeV. The Higgs potential is generated by gauge and Yukawa interactions, and is distinctly different from that of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. At the TeV scale, the new bosonic degrees of freedom are a single neutral complex scalar and a second copy of SU(2)xU(1) gauge bosons. Additional vector-like pairs of colored fermions are also present.Comment: 13 page

    Predictions for PP-wave string amplitudes from perturbative SYM

    The role of general two-impurity multi-trace operators in the BMN correspondence is explored. Surprisingly, the anomalous dimensions of all two-impurity multi-trace BMN operators to order g_2^2\lambda' are completely determined in terms of single-trace anomalous dimensions. This is due to suppression of connected field theory diagrams in the BMN limit and this fact has important implications for some string theory processes on the PP-wave background. We also make gauge theory predictions for the matrix elements of the light-cone string field theory Hamiltonian in the two string-two string and one string-three string sectors.Comment: 46 pages, 12 figures.     Mother Moose: Generating Extra Dimensions from Simple Groups at Large N

    We show that there exists a correspondence between four dimensional gauge theories with simple groups and higher dimensional gauge theories at large N. As an example, we show that a four dimensional {N}=2 supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory, on the Higgs branch, has the same correlators as a five dimensional SU(N) gauge theory in the limit of large N provided the couplings are appropriately rescaled. We show that our results can be applied to the AdS/CFT correspondence to derive correlators of five or more dimensional gauge theories from solutions of five dimensional supergravity in the large t'Hooft coupling limit.Comment: 12 pages, references adde
