Collisional shifts in optical-lattice atom clocks
We theoretically study the effects of elastic collisions on the determination
of frequency standards via Ramsey fringe spectroscopy in optical-lattice atom
clocks. Interparticle interactions of bosonic atoms in multiply-occupied
lattice sites can cause a linear frequency shift, as well as generate
asymmetric Ramsey fringe patterns and reduce fringe visibility due to
interparticle entanglement. We propose a method of reducing these collisional
effects in an optical lattice by introducing a phase difference of
between the Ramsey driving fields in adjacent sites. This configuration
suppresses site to site hopping due to interference of two tunneling pathways,
without degrading fringe visibility. Consequently, the probability of double
occupancy is reduced, leading to cancellation of collisional shifts.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figure
Biomass production and mineral element supply of selected useful tropical plants.
This current investigation is part of a cooperative project of CPAA-Manaus and Hamburg University entitled "Recultivation of degraded and abandoned monocultures instable mixed cultures with special reference to soil biological factors". In this study the biomass product and the mineral element supply of selected useful tropical plants will be determined. Parallel to it the availability of nutrient element in the soil will be analyzed. These experiments may allow an evaluation, in which way a sustainable growth of the suggested plant system under the prevailing site conditions is possible.Poster 11
Multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations for photoionization of one-dimensional Helium
The multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree-Fock equations are discussed
and solved for a one-dimensional model of the Helium atom. Results for the
ground state energy and two-particle density as well as the absorption spectrum
are presented and compared to direct solutions of the time-dependent
Schroedinger equation.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Experimental simulation of quantum graphs by microwave networks
We present the results of experimental and theoretical study of irregular,
tetrahedral microwave networks consisting of coaxial cables (annular
waveguides) connected by T-joints. The spectra of the networks were measured in
the frequency range 0.0001-16 GHz in order to obtain their statistical
properties such as the integrated nearest neighbor spacing distribution and the
spectral rigidity. The comparison of our experimental and theoretical results
shows that microwave networks can simulate quantum graphs with time reversal
symmetry. In particular, we use the spectra of the microwave networks to study
the periodic orbits of the simulated quantum graphs. We also present
experimental study of directional microwave networks consisting of coaxial
cables and Faraday isolators for which the time reversal symmetry is broken. In
this case our experimental results indicate that spectral statistics of
directional microwave networks deviate from predictions of Gaussian orthogonal
ensembles (GOE) in random matrix theory approaching, especially for small
eigenfrequency spacing s, results for Gaussian unitary ensembles (GUE).
Experimental results are supported by the theoretical analysis of directional
graphs.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Interplay between Static and Dynamic Properties of Semifluxons in YBa2Cu3O7−δ 0−π Josephson Junctions
We have investigated the static and dynamic properties of long YBa2Cu3O7-delta 0-pi Josephson junctions and compared them with those of conventional 0 junctions. Scanning SQUID microscope imaging has revealed the presence of a semifluxon at the phase discontinuity point in 0-pi Josephson junctions. Zero field steps have been detected in the current-voltage characteristics of all junctions. Comparison with simulation allows us to attribute these steps to fluxons traveling in the junction for conventional 0 junctions and to fluxon-semifluxon interactions in the case of 0-pi Josephson junctions
One-dimensional quantum chaos: Explicitly solvable cases
We present quantum graphs with remarkably regular spectral characteristics.
We call them {\it regular quantum graphs}. Although regular quantum graphs are
strongly chaotic in the classical limit, their quantum spectra are explicitly
solvable in terms of periodic orbits. We present analytical solutions for the
spectrum of regular quantum graphs in the form of explicit and exact periodic
orbit expansions for each individual energy level.Comment: 9 pages and 4 figure
Experimental and numerical investigation of the reflection coefficient and the distributions of Wigner's reaction matrix for irregular graphs with absorption
We present the results of experimental and numerical study of the
distribution of the reflection coefficient P(R) and the distributions of the
imaginary P(v) and the real P(u) parts of the Wigner's reaction K matrix for
irregular fully connected hexagon networks (graphs) in the presence of strong
absorption. In the experiment we used microwave networks, which were built of
coaxial cables and attenuators connected by joints. In the numerical
calculations experimental networks were described by quantum fully connected
hexagon graphs. The presence of absorption introduced by attenuators was
modelled by optical potentials. The distribution of the reflection coefficient
P(R) and the distributions of the reaction K matrix were obtained from the
measurements and numerical calculations of the scattering matrix S of the
networks and graphs, respectively. We show that the experimental and numerical
results are in good agreement with the exact analytic ones obtained within the
framework of random matrix theory (RMT).Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure
Manipulation and Detection of a Trapped Yb+ Ion Hyperfine Qubit
We demonstrate the use of trapped ytterbium ions as quantum bits for quantum
information processing. We implement fast, efficient state preparation and
state detection of the first-order magnetic field-insensitive hyperfine levels
of 171Yb+, with a measured coherence time of 2.5 seconds. The high efficiency
and high fidelity of these operations is accomplished through the stabilization
and frequency modulation of relevant laser sources.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, 1 tabl
