    Kinematic alpha effect in isotropic turbulence simulations

    Using numerical simulations at moderate magnetic Reynolds numbers up to 220 it is shown that in the kinematic regime, isotropic helical turbulence leads to an alpha effect and a turbulent diffusivity whose values are independent of the magnetic Reynolds number, \Rm, provided \Rm exceeds unity. These turbulent coefficients are also consistent with expectations from the first order smoothing approximation. For small values of \Rm, alpha and turbulent diffusivity are proportional to \Rm. Over finite time intervals meaningful values of alpha and turbulent diffusivity can be obtained even when there is small-scale dynamo action that produces strong magnetic fluctuations. This suggests that small-scale dynamo-generated fields do not make a correlated contribution to the mean electromotive force.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

    International audienceThe objective of this paper is to show that it is possible to predict the noise level in displacement and strain maps obtained with the grid method, but that actual noise of camera sensors being heteroscedastic, it is necessary to stabilize this noise in grid images prior to employing the predicting formulas. The procedure used for this purpose relies on the Generalized Anscombe Transform. This transform is first described. It is then shown that experimental and theoretical resolutions in strain maps obtained with the grid method are in good agreement when this transform is employed

    Generalized particle dynamics in anti de Sitter spaces: A source for dark energy

    We consider the generalized particle dynamics, proposed by us, in brane world formalisms for an asymptotically anti de Sitter background. The present framework results in a new model that accounts for the late acceleration of the universe. An effective Dark Energy equation of state, exhibiting a phantom like behaviour, is generated. The model is derived by embedding the physical FRW universe in a (4+1)(4+1)-dimensional effective space-time, induced by the generalized particle dynamics.     Pseudo-Dirac Scenario for Neutrino Oscillations

    We argue how pseudo-Dirac scenario for neutrinos leads to rich neutrino oscillation phenomena, including oscillation inside each generation. The pseudo-Dirac scenario is generalized by incorporating generation mixings and formulae for the various neutrino oscillations are derived. As the application we compare the formulae with the corresponding data. We find that observed pattern of mixings, such as almost maximal mixing in the atmospheric neutrino oscillation, is naturally explained in the generalized Pseudo-Dirac scenario with small generation mixings. We, however, also point out that there remain some problems to be settled for this scenario to be viable. The possible theoretical framework to realize the pseudo-Dirac scenario is also briefly commented on.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX fil

    Phase-space analysis of interacting phantom cosmology

    We perform a detailed phase-space analysis of various phantom cosmological models, where the dark energy sector interacts with the dark matter one. We examine whether there exist late-time scaling attractors, corresponding to an accelerating universe and possessing dark energy and dark matter densities of the same order. We find that all the examined models, although accepting stable late-time accelerated solutions, cannot alleviate the coincidence problem, unless one imposes a form of fine-tuning in the model parameters. It seems that interacting phantom cosmology cannot fulfill the basic requirement that led to its construction.Comment: 6 figures, use revtex, v2: minor corrections, references added, accepted for publication in JCA

    New Results for the Correlation Functions of the Ising Model and the Transverse Ising Chain

    In this paper we show how an infinite system of coupled Toda-type nonlinear differential equations derived by one of us can be used efficiently to calculate the time-dependent pair-correlations in the Ising chain in a transverse field. The results are seen to match extremely well long large-time asymptotic expansions newly derived here. For our initial conditions we use new long asymptotic expansions for the equal-time pair correlation functions of the transverse Ising chain, extending an old result of T.T. Wu for the 2d Ising model.     The entanglement entropy has been historically studied by many authors in order to obtain quantum mechanical interpretations of the gravitational entropy. The discovery of AdS/CFT correspondence leads to the idea of holographic entanglement entropy, which is a clear solution to this important problem in gravity. In this article, we would like to give a quick survey of recent progresses on the holographic entanglement entropy.     Risk factors for high anti-HHV-8 antibody titers (≥1:51,200) in black, HIV-1 negative South African cancer patients: a case control study

    Background: Infection with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is the necessary causal agent in the development of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). Infection with HIV-1, male gender and older age all increase risk for KS. However, the geographic distribution of HHV-8 and KS both prior to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and with HIV/AIDS suggest the presence of an additional co-factor in the development of KS. Methods: Between January 1994 and October 1997, we interviewed 2576 black in-patients with cancer in Johannesburg and Soweto, South Africa. Blood was tested for antibodies against HIV-1 and HHV-8 and the study was restricted to 2191 HIV-1 negative patients. Antibodies against the latent nuclear antigen of HHV-8 encoded by orf73 were detected with an indirect immunofluorescence assay. We examined the relationship between high anti-HHV-8 antibody titers (≥1:51,200) and sociodemographic and behavioral factors using unconditional logistic regression models. Variables that were significant at p = 0.10 were included in multivariate analysis. Results: Of the 2191 HIV-1 negative patients who did not have Kaposi's sarcoma, 854 (39.0%) were positive for antibodies against HHV-8 according to the immunofluorescent assay. Among those seropositive for HHV-8, 530 (62.1%) had low titers (1:200), 227 (26.6%) had medium titers (1:51,200) and 97 (11.4%) had highest titers (1:204,800). Among the 2191 HIV-1 negative patients, the prevalence of high anti-HHV-8 antibody titers (≥1:51,200) was independently associated with increasing age (ptrend = 0.04), having a marital status of separated or divorced (p = 0.003), using wood, coal or charcoal as fuel for cooking 20 years ago instead of electricity (p = 0.02) and consuming traditional maize beer more than one time a week (p = 0.02; p-trend for increasing consumption = 0.05) although this may be due to chance given the large number of predictors considered in this analysis. Conclusions: Among HIV-negative subjects, patients with high anti-HHV-8 antibody titers are characterized by older age. Other associations that may be factors in the development of high anti- HHV-8 titers include exposure to poverty or a low socioeconomic status environment and consumption of traditional maize beer.     Long-Time Tails and Anomalous Slowing Down in the Relaxation of Spatially Inhomogeneous Excitations in Quantum Spin Chains

    Exact analytic calculations in spin-1/2 XY chains, show the presence of long-time tails in the asymptotic dynamics of spatially inhomogeneous excitations. The decay of inhomogeneities, for tt\to \infty , is given in the form of a power law (t/τQ)νQ (t/\tau_{Q}) ^{-\nu_{Q}} where the relaxation time τQ\tau_{Q} and the exponent νQ\nu_{Q} depend on the wave vector QQ, characterizing the spatial modulation of the initial excitation. We consider several variants of the XY model (dimerized, with staggered magnetic field, with bond alternation, and with isotropic and uniform interactions), that are grouped into two families, whether the energy spectrum has a gap or not. Once the initial condition is given, the non-equilibrium problem for the magnetization is solved in closed form, without any other assumption. The long-time behavior for tt\to \infty can be obtained systematically in a form of an asymptotic series through the stationary phase method. We found that gapped models show critical behavior with respect to QQ, in the sense that there exist critical values QcQ_{c}, where the relaxation time τQ\tau_{Q} diverges and the exponent νQ\nu_{Q} changes discontinuously. At those points, a slowing down of the relaxation process is induced, similarly to phenomena occurring near phase transitions. Long-lived excitations are identified as incommensurate spin density waves that emerge in systems undergoing the Peierls transition. In contrast, gapless models do not present the above anomalies as a function of the wave vector QQ.Comment: 25 pages, 2 postscript figures. Manuscript submitted to Physical Review
