Get PDF
Forty four extracts from sixteen plants used traditionally as anticancer agents were evaluated in vitro for their antiproliferative activity against Hep-2, MCF-7, and Vero cell lines. Plants were fractionated using ethanol, methanol, chloroform, n-hexane, distilled water, and butanol. The antiproliferative activity was measured by MTT assay. TLC was used to identify active fractions. The apoptotic activity of active fractions was determined using TUNEL colorimetric assay. 20 of these extracts demonstrated significant antiproliferative activity against one or more of the cell lines. These extracts were prepared from Ononis hirta, Inula viscosa, Salvia pinardi, Verbascum sinaiticum and Ononis sicula. Methanol fractions of Ononis hirta (aerial parts) and Inula viscosa (flowers) were the most active fractions against MCF-7 cells with IC50 of 27.96 and 15.78 μg/ml respectively and they were less toxic against other cell lines. Other extracts showed lower activity against cancer cell lines. TLC analysis showed the presence of flavonoids and terpenoids in active plants while alkaloids were detected in Ononis hirta (aerial parts) extracts. Ononis hirta (aerial parts) and Inula viscosa (flowers) extracts exerted their antiproliferative activity by inducing apoptosis in cancer cell lines. Further studies are necessary for detailed chemical characterization and more extensive biological evaluation of the most active ingredients

The’ effect’ of’ process’ parameters for’ example, pulse current (Ip), pulse’ on’ time’ (Ton) as well as pulse’ off’ time’ (Toff) on’ metal removal’ rate’ (MRR), electrode’ wear’ rate’ (EWR) and’ surface’ roughness’ (Ra), were analyzed. An extensive investigation of difference (ANOVA) at fixed indicative level of 5%, was done to completely distinguish the most persuasive parameters, and the sufficiency of all fitted relapse models were checked. To completely comprehend the trademark machinability conduct under various EDM conditions, fundamental effect investigation. The results indicate that MRR increases with the rising Ip and Ton. Low EWR and Ra can be acquired by diminishing Ip and Ton. Be that as it may, the Ip is the most commanding parameter pursued by Ton and Toff for MRR and Ra whereas in the EWR, the Ip is the foremost factor, followed by the Toff and Ton. Lastly, a multi-optimization way dependent upon the desirability function (DF) idea was used to discover ideal blends of machining parameters so that it was capable to produce the the most extreme estimation of MRR and least estimations of EWR and Ra, inside the noteworthy information parameters

The industry's extensive use of petroleum-based metalworking fluid (MWF) harms the environment and humans. The production of bio-based MWF, especially from crude jatropha oil (CJO), has therefore taken numerous initiatives. This aimed to formulate newly modified jatropha oil (MJO) with the addition of 0.05wt.% hBN and 0.05wt.% MoS2 as the nanofluid for MWF. The performance of the nanofluids was determined through the turning process in terms of cutting temperature, workpiece surface roughness, tool life and tool wear of the tool lubricated by the nanofluids. The performance of the nanofluid samples was compared with the synthetic ester (SE). From the results, after conducted 100mm axial cutting length MJO+hBN+MoS2 recorded the lowest in cutting temperature and surface roughness compared to all samples. The result shows that MJO+hBN+MoS2 has longer tool life (6500mm) compared to SE (6000mm). Abrasion and adhesion were observed as the dominant tool wear mechanism. In conclusion, MJO+hBN+MoS2 shows better machining performance and has the potential to be an environmentally friendly metalworking fluid

The Association Between Obesity And COVID-19: An Analysis Of Risk Factors

Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to focus on whether solely obesity (measured by BMI) leads to an increased risk of COVID-19 mortality in terms of excess in-hospital deaths. As the grim milestone of one million deaths in the United States from COVID-19 was reached, one could assume the disease would continue to coexist with humanity in the long term. While vaccination continued to limit the spread of COVID-19, it was essential to investigate risk factors that may exacerbate the severity of the illness in humans. Obesity is already a global pandemic affecting 40% of Americans and over 650 million people worldwide. Obesity is connected to an entire range of clinical conditions including some of the leading causes of death worldwide making it a more generalizable statistic. Furthermore, the purpose of this study was to conduct a systemic review of major risk factors between obesity and COVID-19, and this analysis shall ascertain which factors have the most predictive value in determining mortality and severity of the condition. Ten research studies of 3,780,926 COVID-19 patient cases were included. Meta-analysis results indicate a pooled OR of 0.93 (0.71-1.23, p = 0.627) for in-hospital mortality of obese patients relative to non-obese patients when adjusted for confounders. All comorbidities associated with the development of severe disease were found to have an equal chance of leading to mortality. In other words, obesity did not lead to a statistically significant risk of dying from COVID-19

Get PDF
Hyacinthus orientalis L. (family Hyacinthaceae) is traditionally used to treat different diseases including cancer. In this study, the anticancer and immunomodulatory effects of this plant were evaluated. Hydroalcoholic extract was prepared, and different solvent fractions were obtained using solvent–solvent extraction. In the anticancer part, MTT assay and caspase-3 ELISA kits were used to measure the antiproliferative and apoptosis induction ability for each extract, respectively. In the immunomodulatory part, lymphocyte proliferation assay and cytokines detection kit were used to measure the effect of extracts of acquired immunity. Phagocytosis and pinocytosis induction were used to evaluate the effect of extracts on the innate immunity. GC–MS, LC–MS, and Foline–Ciocalteu assays were used to identify the chemical composition of the plant. Balb/C mice were inoculated with breast cancer and treated with hydroalcoholic extract of H. orientalis L. Results showed that hydroalcoholic extract and n-hexane fraction were highly effective in apoptosis induction. Both extract and fraction were also effective in stimulating lymphocytes proliferation and phagocytosis. Significant reduction in tumor size was achieved after treating tumor-bearing mice with hydroalcoholic extract. Additionally, high cure percentages (50%) were obtained in treated mice. Results of this study showed that H. orientalis L. has promising anticancer and immunomodulatory activities. However, further studies are needed to explore more details of apoptosis induction ability and other mechanisms of action and to measure different signaling pathways responsible for the anticancer and immunomodulatory response

Triaxial behaviour of partially saturated granular soils at low stress levels.

Granular soil is used as a backfilling material in trenches that are prepared for the installation, repair and replacement of service pipes. The soil is likely to be partially saturated and subjected to low stress levels (<100 kPa), as it exists at shallow depths (about 5m below the ground) A new double-wall triaxial cell has been designed for testing partially saturated granular specimens with height/diameter equalt o 375 mm/150m m, at low stress levels. The cell is able to make separate measurements and control of the pore air and pore water pressures. It was designed to make specimens tress and strain measurements in ternally. A conventional triaxial cell was modified to carry out tests on saturated granular specimens of the same dimensions at low stress levels. Two gradings of Limestone, fine and coarse, with maximum particle sizes of 5 nun and 20 mm respectively ere used in the triaxial tests. The experimental results showed that the suction in the range 25 kPa to 75 kPa can have an effect on the volume, stiffness and shear strength of partially saturated granular soils at low stress levels. Ile results also showed that there is a linear relationship between q and (p-u. ) for the unsaturated soils or (p-u,, ) for the saturated soils. And Fredlund's equation cannot be used to predict the shear strength of partially saturated granular soils at low stress levels, if the value of O'is taken from tests carried out on saturated specimens. The results also showed that there was a relationship between q , (p-q. ), suction, specific volume and water content, all at failure
