    In situ sensors for measurements in the global trosposphere

    Current techniques available for the in situ measurement of ambient trace gas species, particulate composition, and particulate size distribution are reviewed. The operational specifications of the various techniques are described. Most of the techniques described are those that have been used in airborne applications or show promise of being adaptable to airborne applications. Some of the instruments described are specialty items that are not commercially-available. In situ measurement techniques for several meteorological parameters important in the study of the distribution and transport of ambient air pollutants are discussed. Some remote measurement techniques for meteorological parameters are also discussed. State-of-the-art measurement capabilities are compared with a list of capabilities and specifications desired by NASA for ambient measurements in the global troposphere

    Frontostriatal Maturation Predicts Cognitive Control Failure to Appetitive Cues in Adolescents

    Adolescent risk-taking is a public health issue that increases the odds of poor lifetime outcomes. One factor thought to influence adolescents' propensity for risk-taking is an enhanced sensitivity to appetitive cues, relative to an immature capacity to exert sufficient cognitive control. We tested this hypothesis by characterizing interactions among ventral striatal, dorsal striatal, and prefrontal cortical regions with varying appetitive load using fMRI scanning. Child, teen, and adult participants performed a go/no-go task with appetitive (happy faces) and neutral cues (calm faces). Impulse control to neutral cues showed linear improvement with age, whereas teens showed a nonlinear reduction in impulse control to appetitive cues. This performance decrement in teens was paralleled by enhanced activity in the ventral striatum. Prefrontal cortical recruitment correlated with overall accuracy and showed a linear response with age for no-go versus go trials. Connectivity analyses identified a ventral frontostriatal circuit including the inferior frontal gyrus and dorsal striatum during no-go versus go trials. Examining recruitment developmentally showed that teens had greater between-subject ventral-dorsal striatal coactivation relative to children and adults for happy no-go versus go trials. These findings implicate exaggerated ventral striatal representation of appetitive cues in adolescents relative to an intermediary cognitive control response. Connectivity and coactivity data suggest these systems communicate at the level of the dorsal striatum differentially across development. Biased responding in this system is one possible mechanism underlying heightened risk-taking during adolescence

    Integrated waveguides and deterministically positioned nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond created by femtosecond laser writing

    Diamond's nitrogen vacancy (NV) center is an optically active defect with long spin coherence times, showing great potential for both efficient nanoscale magnetometry and quantum information processing schemes. Recently, both the formation of buried 3D optical waveguides and high quality single NVs in diamond were demonstrated using the versatile femtosecond laser-writing technique. However, until now, combining these technologies has been an outstanding challenge. In this work, we fabricate laser written photonic waveguides in quantum grade diamond which are aligned to within micron resolution to single laser-written NVs, enabling an integrated platform providing deterministically positioned waveguide-coupled NVs. This fabrication technology opens the way towards on-chip optical routing of single photons between NVs and optically integrated spin-based sensing

    Learning from an Electronic Chart Testbed

    Over the past five years, the Canadian Hydrographic Service’s Electronic Chart Testbed has provided insights into the way an electronic chart (EC) will handle chart data — and from this the appropriate form for the Hydrographic Office to provide and electronic chart database; it has stimulated suggestions about how the display should be designed; it has provided a practical model for use in planning IHO specifications — and followed on to test these by implementing them; and it has shared in giving mariners demonstrations of some of the eventual capabilities of ECDIS, so that they can start thinking about what they need from it. This paper describes planning the Testbed; lessons from early tests; initial ideas on electronic chart data and on display design; and the reactions from mariners who saw the Testbed among six electronic charts on board the Norwegian ship LANCE during the 1988 North Sea Project

    Patch repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia is not at risk of poor outcomes

    Purpose: Recurrence of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) was retrospectively evaluated after correction with or without a patch in an institution where tension-free repair is advocated. // Methods: Demographics and outcomes of patients with a postero-lateral CDH repaired (2000-2016) were analysed (univariate tests and binary logistic regression adjusting for time since start of study, gender, defect side, liver herniation, patch, surgical approach, absence of postero-lateral rim and length of follow-up). // Results: Of 203 patients, 107 received a patch (P), and 96 were not patched (NP). Groups were not different for gestational age birthweight, gender, defect side and minimally-invasive approach rate. Preoperative ECMO incidence (P:29.9% vs. NP:2.1%, p<0.01), liver herniation (P:57.0% vs. NP:22.9%, p<0.01) and absence of a postero-lateral rim (P:61.7% vs. NP:8.3%, p<0.01) were higher in the P group. The mortality rate was 10.8% (P:15.0% vs. NP:6.2%, p=0.07). Recurrence was not different (P:9.3% vs. NP:4.2%, p=0.15). Multivariate analysis showed that recurrence was higher after thoracoscopy compared to open (OR=12.2 [2.2-68], p<0.01); neither the use of patch (OR=2.3, [0.5-10.4], p=0.28) nor any other factors were associated with recurrence. // Conclusion: In this single centre series where tension-free repair was advocated, patch repair of CDH was not associated with higher recurrence, though access route was

    Influence of the Soret effect on convection of binary fluids

    Convection in horizontal layers of binary fluids heated from below and in particular the influence of the Soret effect on the bifurcation properties of extended stationary and traveling patterns that occur for negative Soret coupling is investigated theoretically. The fixed points corresponding to these two convection structures are determined for realistic boundary conditions with a many mode Galerkin scheme for temperature and concentration and an accurate one mode truncation of the velocity field. This solution procedure yields the stable and unstable solutions for all stationary and traveling patterns so that complete phase diagrams for the different convection types in typical binary liquid mixtures can easily be computed. Also the transition from weakly to strongly nonlinear states can be analyzed in detail. An investigation of the concentration current and of the relevance of its constituents shows the way for a simplification of the mode representation of temperature and concentration field as well as for an analytically manageable few mode description.Comment: 30 pages, 12 figure

    Notes on Conformal Invisibility Devices

    As a consequence of the wave nature of light, invisibility devices based on isotropic media cannot be perfect. The principal distortions of invisibility are due to reflections and time delays. Reflections can be made exponentially small for devices that are large in comparison with the wavelength of light. Time delays are unavoidable and will result in wave-front dislocations. This paper considers invisibility devices based on optical conformal mapping. The paper shows that the time delays do not depend on the directions and impact parameters of incident light rays, although the refractive-index profile of any conformal invisibility device is necessarily asymmetric. The distortions of images are thus uniform, which reduces the risk of detection. The paper also shows how the ideas of invisibility devices are connected to the transmutation of force, the stereographic projection and Escheresque tilings of the plane

    Ratio of Hadronic Decay Rates of J\psi and \psi(2S) and the \rho\pi Puzzle

    The so-called \rho\pi puzzle of J\psi and \psi(2S) decays is examined using the experimental data available to date. Two different approaches were taken to estimate the ratio of J\psi and \psi(2S) hadronic decay rates. While one of the estimates could not yield the exact ratio of \psi(2S) to J\psi inclusive hadronic decay rates, the other, based on a computation of the inclusive ggg decay rate for \psi(2S) (J\psi) by subtracting other decay rates from the total decay rate, differs by two standard deviations from the naive prediction of perturbative QCD, even though its central value is nearly twice as large as what was naively expected. A comparison between this ratio, upon making corrections for specific exclusive two-body decay modes, and the corresponding experimental data confirms the puzzles in J\psi and \psi(2S) decays. We find from our analysis that the exclusively reconstructed hadronic decays of the \psi(2S) account for only a small fraction of its total decays, and a ratio exceeding the above estimate should be expected to occur for a considerable number of the remaining decay channels. We also show that the recent new results from the BES experiment provide crucial tests of various theoretical models proposed to explain the puzzle.Comment: 8 pages, no figure, 4 table

    Use of the Frank sequence in pulsed EPR

    The Frank polyphase sequence has been applied to pulsed EPR of triarylmethyl radicals at 256 MHz (9.1 mT magnetic field), using 256 phase pulses. In EPR, as in NMR, use of a Frank sequence of phase steps permits pulsed FID signal acquisition with very low power microwave/RF pulses (ca. 1.5 mW in the application reported here) relative to standard pulsed EPR. A 0.2 mM aqueous solution of a triarylmethyl radical was studied using a 16 mm diameter cross loop resonator to isolate the EPR signal detection system from the incident pulses

    Electrical properties of a-antimony selenide

    This paper reports conduction mechanism in a-\sbse over a wide range of temperature (238K to 338K) and frequency (5Hz to 100kHz). The d.c. conductivity measured as a function of temperature shows semiconducting behaviour with activation energy Δ\DeltaE= 0.42 eV. Thermally induced changes in the electrical and dielectric properties of a-\sbse have been examined. The a.c. conductivity in the material has been explained using modified CBH model. The band conduction and single polaron hopping is dominant above room temperature.
