Effects of state anxiety on gait:a 7.5% carbon dioxide challenge study
We used the 7.5% carbon dioxide (CO(2)) model of anxiety induction to investigate the effects of state anxiety on normal gait and gait when navigating an obstacle. Healthy volunteers (n = 22) completed a walking task during inhalations of 7.5% CO(2) and medical air (placebo) in a within-subjects design. The order of inhalation was counterbalanced across participants and the gas was administered double-blind. Over a series of trials, participants walked the length of the laboratory, with each trial requiring participants to navigate through an aperture (width adjusted to participant size), with gait parameters measured via a motion capture system. The main findings were that walking speed was slower, but the adjustment in body orientation was greater, during 7.5% CO(2) inhalation compared to air. These findings indicate changes in locomotor behaviour during heightened state anxiety that may reflect greater caution when moving in an agitated state. Advances in sensing technology offer the opportunity to monitor locomotor behaviour, and these findings suggest that in doing so, we may be able to infer emotional states from movement in naturalistic settings. Probing the IGM/Galaxy Connection V: On the Origin of Lya and OVI Absorption at z<0.2
We analyze the association of galaxies to Lya and OVI absorption, the most
commonly detected transitions in the low-z intergalactic medium (IGM), in the
fields of 14 quasars with z_em = 0.06-0.57. Confirming previous studies, we
observe a high covering fraction for Lya absorption to impact parameter rho =
300kpc: 33/37 of our L>0.01L* galaxies show Lya equivalent width W_Lya>50mA.
Galaxies of all luminosity L>0.01L* and spectral type are surrounded by a
diffuse and ionized circumgalactic medium (CGM), whose baryonic mass is
estimated at ~10^(10.5 +/- 0.3) Msun for a constant N_H. The virialized halos
and extended CGM of present-day galaxies are responsible for most strong Lya
absorbers (W_Lya > 300mA) but cannot reproduce the majority of observed lines
in the Lya forest. We conclude that the majority of Lya absorption with
W_Lya=30-300mA occurs in the cosmic web predicted by cosmological simulations
and estimate a characteristic width for these filaments of ~400kpc. Regarding
OVI, we observe a near unity covering fraction to rho=200kpc for L>0.1L*
galaxies and to rho = 300kpc for sub-L* (0.1 L*<L<L*) galaxies. Similar to our
Lya results, stronger OVI systems (W_OVI > 70mA) arise in the virialized halos
of L>0.1L* galaxies. Unlike Lya, the weaker OVI systems (W_OVI~30mA) arise in
the extended CGM of sub-L* galaxies. The majority of OVI gas observed in the
low-z IGM is associated with a diffuse medium surrounding individual galaxies
with L~0.3L*, and rarely originates in the so-called warm-hot IGM (WHIM)

Probing the IGM/Galaxy Connection IV: The LCO/WFCCD Galaxy Survey of 20 Fields Surrounding UV Bright Quasars
We publish the survey for galaxies in 20 fields containing ultraviolet bright
quasars (with z_em 0.1 to 0.5) that can be used to study the association
between galaxies and absorption systems from the low-z intergalactic medium
(IGM). The survey is magnitude limited (R~19.5 mag) and highly complete out to
10' from the quasar in each field. It was designed to detect dwarf galaxies (L
~ 0.1 L*) at an impact parameter rho 1Mpc (z=0.1) from a quasar. The complete
sample (all 20 fields) includes R-band photometry for 84718 sources and
confirmed redshifts for 2800 sources. This includes 1198 galaxies with 0.005 <
z < (z_em - 0.01) at a median redshift of 0.18, which may associated with IGM
absorption lines. All of the imaging was acquired with cameras on the Swope 40"
telescope and the spectra were obtained via slitmask observations using the
WFCCD spectrograph on the Dupont 100" telescope at Las Campanas Observatory
(LCO). This paper describes the data reduction, imaging analysis, photometry,
and spectral analysis of the survey. We tabulate the principal measurements for

Emotional bias training as a treatment for anxiety and depression:evidence from experimental medicine studies in healthy and medicated samples
BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression are leading causes of disability worldwide, yet individuals are often unable to access appropriate treatment. There is a need to develop effective interventions that can be delivered remotely. Previous research has suggested that emotional processing biases are a potential target for intervention, and these may be altered through brief training programs. METHODS: We report two experimental medicine studies of emotional bias training in two samples: individuals from the general population (n = 522) and individuals currently taking antidepressants to treat anxiety or depression (n = 212). Participants, recruited online, completed four sessions of EBT from their own home. Mental health and cognitive functioning outcomes were assessed at baseline, immediately post-training, and at 2-week follow-up. RESULTS: In both studies, our intervention successfully trained participants to perceive ambiguous social information more positively. This persisted at a 2-week follow-up. There was no clear evidence that this change in emotional processing transferred to improvements in symptoms in the primary analyses. However, in both studies, there was weak evidence for improved quality of life following EBT amongst individuals with more depressive symptoms at baseline. No clear evidence of transfer effects was observed for self-reported daily stress, anhedonia or depressive symptoms. Exploratory analyses suggested that younger participants reported greater treatment gains. CONCLUSIONS: These studies demonstrate the effectiveness of delivering a multi-session online training program to promote lasting cognitive changes. Given the inconsistent evidence for transfer effects, EBT requires further development before it can be considered as a treatment for anxiety and depression
Multiwavelength Monitoring of the BL Lacertae Object PKS 2155-304 in May 1994. II. The IUE Campaign
PKS 2155-304, the brightest BL Lac object in the ultraviolet sky, was
monitored with the IUE satellite at ~1 hour time-resolution for ten nearly
uninterrupted days in May 1994. The campaign, which was coordinated with EUVE,
ROSAT, and ASCA monitoring, along with optical and radio observations from the
ground, yielded the largest set of spectra and the richest short time scale
variability information ever gathered for a blazar at UV wavelengths. The
source flared dramatically during the first day, with an increase by a factor
~2.2 in an hour and a half. In subsequent days, the flux maintained a nearly
constant level for ~5 days, then flared with ~35% amplitude for two days. The
same variability was seen in both short- and long-wavelength IUE light curves,
with zero formal lag (~<2 hr), except during the rapid initial flare, when the
variations were not resolved. Spectral index variations were small and not
clearly correlated with flux. The flux variability observed in the present
monitoring is so rapid that for the first time, based on the UV emission alone,
the traditional Delta L/Delta t limit indicating relativistic beaming is
exceeded. The most rapid variations, under the likely assumption of synchrotron
radiation, lead to a lower limit of 1 G on the magnetic field strength in the
UV emitting region. These results are compared with earlier intensive
monitoring of PKS 2155-304 with IUE in November 1991, when the UV flux

Cognitive bias modification for facial interpretation:A randomized controlled trial of transfer to self-report and cognitive measures in a healthy sample
Cognitive bias modification is a potential low-intensity intervention for mood disorders, but previous studies have shown mixed success. This study explored whether facial interpretation bias modification (FIBM), a similar paradigm designed to shift emotional interpretation (and/or perception) of faces would transfer to: (i) self-reported symptoms and (ii) a battery of cognitive tasks. In a preregistered, double-blind randomized controlled trial, healthy participants received eight online sessions of FIBM (N = 52) or eight sham sessions (N = 52). While we replicate that FIBM successfully shifts ambiguous facial expression interpretation in the intervention group, this failed to transfer to the majority of self-report or cognitive measures. There was, however, weak, inconclusive evidence of transfer to a self-report measure of stress, a cognitive measure of anhedonia, and evidence that results were moderated by trait anxiety (whereby transference was greatest in those with higher baseline symptoms). We discuss the need for work in both larger and clinical samples, while urging caution that these FIBM training effects may not transfer to clinically relevant domains
