    Method of Collective Degrees of Freedom in Spin Coherent State Path Integral

    We present a detailed field theoretic description of those collective degrees of freedom (CDF) which are relevant to study macroscopic quantum dynamics of a quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnetic domain wall. We apply spin coherent state path integral (SCSPI) in the proper discrete time formalism (a) to extract the relevant CDF's, namely, the center position and the chirality of the domain wall, which originate from the translation and the rotation invariances of the system in question, and (b) to derive effective action for the CDF's by elimination of environmental zero-modes with the help of the {\it Faddeev-Popov technique}. The resulting effective action turns out to be such that both the center position and the chirality can be formally described by boson coherent state path integral. However, this is only formal; there is a subtle departure from the latter.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur

    Macroscopic Quantum Dynamics of a Free Domain Wall in a Ferromagnet

    We study macroscopic quantum dynamics of a free domain wall in a quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnet by use of the spin-coherent-state path integral in {\it discrete-time} formalism. Transition amplitudes between typical states are quantitatively discussed by use of {\it stationary-action approximation} with respect to collective degrees of freedom representing the center position and the chirality of the domain wall. It is shown that the chirality may be loosely said to be canonically conjugate to the center position; the latter moves with a speed depending on the former. It is clarified under what condition the center position can be regarded as an effective free-particle position, which exhibits the phenomenon of wave-packet spreading. We demonstrate, however, that in some case the non-linear character of the spin leads to such a dramatic phenomenon of a non-spreading wave packet as to completely invalidate the free-particle analogy.     Caracterización bromatológica y estudios preliminares de la textura de quesos regionales de la provincia de Entre Ríos

    El 41% de los aproximadamente 1800 tambos que existen en la provincia de Entre Ríos deben recurrir ocasionalmente a la elaboración de queso. Estos quesos se elaboran sin los controles de una industria láctea organizada y, por ende, la calidad de su producción resulta incierta.Con el objeto de determinar la composición, la textura y la calidad bromatológica de estos quesos se tomaron muestras de 30 provenientes de estos establecimientos y se le practicaron análisis bromatológicos y fisicoquímicos, y se cuantificaron parámetros asociados a descriptores texturales (firmeza y fracturabilidad).Los resultados de los estudios fisicoquímicos y microbiológicos permitieron concluir que el perfil composicional de estos quesos es muy heterogéneo; además, si bien la carga de levaduras y hongos es relativamente alta son un alimento de bajo riesgo para la transmisión de enfermedades. También se determinó que la firmeza de los quesos analizados presenta una variabilidad mayor que la composición

    Spin tunnelling in mesoscopic systems

    We study spin tunnelling in molecular magnets as an instance of a mesoscopic phenomenon, with special emphasis on the molecule Fe8. We show that the tunnel splitting between various pairs of Zeeman levels in this molecule oscillates as a function of applied magnetic field, vanishing completely at special points in the space of magnetic fields, known as diabolical points. This phenomena is explained in terms of two approaches, one based on spin-coherent-state path integrals, and the other on a generalization of the phase integral (or WKB) method to difference equations.     Recruitment, augmentation and apoptosis of rat osteoclasts in 1,25-(OH)2D3 response to short-term treatment with 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3in vivo

    Background Although much is known about the regulation of osteoclast (OC) formation and activity, little is known about OC senescence. In particular, the fate of of OC seen after 1,25-(OH)2D3 administration in vivo is unclear. There is evidence that the normal fate of OC is to undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death). We have investigated the effect of short-term application of high dose 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-(OH)2D3) on OC apoptosis in an experimental rat model. Methods OC recruitment, augmentation and apoptosis was visualised and quantitated by staining histochemically for tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), double staining for TRAP/ED1 or TRAP/DAPI, in situ DNA fragmentation end labelling and histomorphometric analysis. Results Short-term treatment with high-dose 1,25-(OH)2D3 increased the recruitment of OC precursors in the bone marrow resulting in a short-lived increase in OC numbers. This was rapidly followed by an increase in the number of apoptotic OC and their subsequent removal. The response of OC to 1,25-(OH)2D3 treatment was dose and site dependent; higher doses producing stronger, more rapid responses and the response in the tibiae being consistently stronger and more rapid than in the vertebrae. Conclusions This study demonstrates that (1) after recruitment, OC are removed from the resorption site by apoptosis (2) the combined use of TRAP and ED1 can be used to identify OC and their precursors in vivo (3) double staining for TRAP and DAPI or in situ DNA fragmentation end labelling can be used to identify apoptotic OC in vivo

    Mixed Climatology, Non-synoptic Phenomena and Downburst Wind Loading of Structures

    Modern wind engineering was born in 1961, when Davenport published a paper in which meteorology, micrometeorology, climatology, bluff-body aerodynamics and structural dynamics were embedded within a homogeneous framework of the wind loading of structures called today \u201cDavenport chain\u201d. Idealizing the wind with a synoptic extra-tropical cyclone, this model was so simple and elegant as to become a sort of axiom. Between 1976 and 1977 Gomes and Vickery separated thunderstorm from non-thunderstorm winds, determined their disjoint extreme distributions and derived a mixed model later extended to other Aeolian phenomena; this study, which represents a milestone in mixed climatology, proved the impossibility of labelling a heterogeneous range of events by the generic term \u201cwind\u201d.     Phytoplankton chlorophyte structure as related to ENSO events in a saline lowland river (Salado River, Buenos Aires, Argentina)

    We analyzed the phytoplankton present in the lower sector of the Salado River (Buenos Aires, Argentina) for 10 years (1995–2005) and detected significant changes occurring in chlorophyte abundance and species richness during La Niña event (1998–1999), which period was analyzed throughout the entire basin (main stream and tributaries). We compared the physicochemical and biologic variables between two El Niño–La Niña–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) periods – El Niño (March 1997–January 1998) and La Niña (May 1998–May 1999) – to identify possible indicators of a relationship between climatic anomalies and chlorophyte performance. Chlorophyte density increased during the La Niña. Under normal or extreme hydrologic conditions, mobile (Chlamydomonas spp.) and nonmobile (Monoraphidium spp.) chlorophytes codominated. These species belonged to Reynolds's functional groups X1 and X2, those typical of nutrient-enriched environments. Comparative analyses between El Niño and La Niña periods indicated significant differences in physicochemical (K+, dissolved polyphenols, particulate reactive phosphorus, alkalinity, pH) and biologic (species diversity and richness, phytoplankton and chlorophyte total densities) variables between the two periods at all basin sites. During the La Niña condition, species richness was greater owing to interconnected shallow lakes and drainage-channel inputs, while the Shannon diversity index was lower because of the high abundance values of Monoraphidium minutum. A detailed analysis of the chlorophytes in the entire basin, indicated that changes in density and species dominance occurred on a regional scale although diverse chlorophyte assemblages were identified in the different sectors of the Salado River basin. After La Niña event, the entire basin had the potential to revert to the previous density values, showing the resilience to global environmental changes and the ability to reestablish the general conditions of stability.Fil: Solari, Lía Cristina.     Examination of the effects of a new compression garment on skin tissue oxygenation in healthy volunteers

    Objective: Compression devices have been shown to reduce venous stasis, increase blood flow and skin tissue oxygenation (StO2), promoting healthy tissue. This study aimed to explore the efficacy of a new compression garment in three different positions in healthy adults. Methods: In this quantitative study, potential participants were screened and recruited using the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q, Canada). Participants attended three separate, one-hour sessions to evaluate StO2 in supine-lying, chair-sitting and long-sitting positions. StO2 was recorded for 20 minutes pre-, during and post- a 20-minute intervention using a compression garment, TributeWrap (Lohmann-Rauscher, Germany). A repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was followed by post-hoc pairwise comparisons. Results: A total of 28 healthy volunteers took part (aged 24.6 ±8.4years; 13 males, 15 females). A significant difference was seen between the three positions (p<0.001). Chair-sitting had the lowest StO2 pre-intervention, increasing StO2 significantly (32.25%, p<0.001) during wear of the compression garment (24.8% higher than baseline post-intervention). No significant difference was seen between long sitting and supine-lying (p=1.000). In contrast, long-sitting and supine-lying StO2 was higher pre-intervention compared with chair-sitting and only increased post-intervention (11% and 16.8% respectively, p<0.001) compared with baseline. Conclusion: The compression garment significantly increased StO2 levels in both seating positions. Further studies are required to determine if increasing StO2 through short intervention sessions with this device has the potential to improve self-management of tissue health in individuals with reduced mobility, oedema or venous insufficiency
