    Image Based Model for Document Search and Re-ranking

    Traditional Web search engines do not use the images in the web pages to search relevant documents for a given query. Instead, they are typically operated by computing a measure of agreement between the keywords provided by the user and only the text portion of each web page. This project describes whether the image content appearing in a Web page can be used to enhance the semantic description of Web page and accordingly improve the performance of a keyword-based search engine. A Web-scalable system is presented in such a way that exploits a pure text-based search engine that finds an initial set of candidate documents as per given query. Then, by using visual information extracted from the images contained in the pages, the candidate set will be re-ranked. The computational efficiency of traditional text-based search engines will be maintained by the resulting system with only a small additional storage cost that will be needed to predetermine the visual information

    Storage behavior of potato cultivars under ambient conditions in the Nilgiris

    Storage behavior of different potato cultivars viz., Kufri Swarna, Kufri Girdhari, Kufri Jyoti, Kufri Neelima and Kufri Himalini was assessed for post harvest loss under ambient storage conditions of Nilgiri region. The study was carried out in three different seasons (Spring, Summer and Autumn) during 2013-2015. All the cultivars showed dormancy period of more than six weeks in all the three seasons. Cultivars varied widely in their weight loss, sprouting behavior and cooking quality. Among the varieties Kufri Girdhari found to possess good storage qualities while Kufri Swarna showed poor keeping quality in all the three seasons. All the cultivars recorded less total weight loss during autumn season. The study indicated that importance should be given to the storage behavior of the cultivars along with yield in order to have better keeping quality for regular supply of tubers for table as well as seed purpose

    Accelerated oxidation of cotton cellulose in presence of reducing substances-I

    (1) The measurement of oxidation potential of dilute solutions of sodium hypochlorite has been carried out at 30°C. by a method used successfully by various investigators. (2) The values of the oxidation potential at 30°C. are higher than those at 20°C. The differences in the potentials become more and more marked with reduction in the pH of the hypochlorite solution. (3) A correction of pH×0.06 volts to the measured potentials at 30°C. does not show any maximum value over the pH region examined. A sharp change in the direction of pH-corrected oxidation potential curve, however, occurs at about the same pH at which a maximum is obtained at 20°C. (4) There exists no similarity between the corrected oxidation potential-pH curve at 30°C. and a curve showing relation between oxygen uptake or fluidity and pH at 30°C. Nabar, Scholefield and Turner had shown a striking resemblance between these curves at 20°C

    An objective based classification of aggregation techniques for wireless sensor networks

    Wireless Sensor Networks have gained immense popularity in recent years due to their ever increasing capabilities and wide range of critical applications. A huge body of research efforts has been dedicated to find ways to utilize limited resources of these sensor nodes in an efficient manner. One of the common ways to minimize energy consumption has been aggregation of input data. We note that every aggregation technique has an improvement objective to achieve with respect to the output it produces. Each technique is designed to achieve some target e.g. reduce data size, minimize transmission energy, enhance accuracy etc. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of aggregation techniques that can be used in distributed manner to improve lifetime and energy conservation of wireless sensor networks. Main contribution of this work is proposal of a novel classification of such techniques based on the type of improvement they offer when applied to WSNs. Due to the existence of a myriad of definitions of aggregation, we first review the meaning of term aggregation that can be applied to WSN. The concept is then associated with the proposed classes. Each class of techniques is divided into a number of subclasses and a brief literature review of related work in WSN for each of these is also presented

    Wnt11/Fzd7 signaling compartmentalizes AKAP2/PKA to regulate L-type Ca2+ channel

    Calcium influx through the voltage-gated L-type calcium channels (LTCC) mediates a wide range of physiological processes from contraction to secretion. Despite extensive research on regulation of LTCC conductance by PKA phosphorylation in response to β-adrenergic stimulation, the science remains incomplete. Here, we show that Wnt11, a non-canonical Wnt ligand, through its G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) Fzd7 attenuates the LTCC conductance by preventing the proteolytic processing of its C terminus. This is mediated across species by protein kinase A (PKA), which is compartmentalized by A-kinase anchoring proteins (AKAP). Systematic analysis of all AKAP family members revealed AKAP2 anchoring of PKA is central to the Wnt11-dependent regulation of the channel. The identified Wnt11/AKAP2/PKA signalosome is required for heart development, controlling the intercellular electrical coupling in the developing zebrafish heart. Altogether, our data revealed Wnt11/Fzd7 signaling via AKAP2/PKA as a conserved alternative GPCR system regulating Ca(2+) homeostasis

    An analysis of waves underlying grid cell firing in the medial enthorinal cortex

    Layer II stellate cells in the medial enthorinal cortex (MEC) express hyperpolarisation-activated cyclic-nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels that allow for rebound spiking via an I_h current in response to hyperpolarising synaptic input. A computational modelling study by Hasselmo [2013 Neuronal rebound spiking, resonance frequency and theta cycle skipping may contribute to grid cell firing in medial entorhinal cortex. Phil. Trans. R. Soc. B 369: 20120523] showed that an inhibitory network of such cells can support periodic travelling waves with a period that is controlled by the dynamics of the I_h current. Hasselmo has suggested that these waves can underlie the generation of grid cells, and that the known difference in I_h resonance frequency along the dorsal to ventral axis can explain the observed size and spacing between grid cell firing fields. Here we develop a biophysical spiking model within a framework that allows for analytical tractability. We combine the simplicity of integrate-and-fire neurons with a piecewise linear caricature of the gating dynamics for HCN channels to develop a spiking neural field model of MEC. Using techniques primarily drawn from the field of nonsmooth dynamical systems we show how to construct periodic travelling waves, and in particular the dispersion curve that determines how wave speed varies as a function of period. This exhibits a wide range of long wavelength solutions, reinforcing the idea that rebound spiking is a candidate mechanism for generating grid cell firing patterns. Importantly we develop a wave stability analysis to show how the maximum allowed period is controlled by the dynamical properties of the I_h current. Our theoretical work is validated by numerical simulations of the spiking model in both one and two dimensions

    ZMIZ1 Preferably Enhances the Transcriptional Activity of Androgen Receptor with Short Polyglutamine Tract

    The androgen receptor (AR) is a ligand-induced transcription factor and contains the polyglutamine (polyQ) tracts within its N-terminal transactivation domain. The length of polyQ tracts has been suggested to alter AR transcriptional activity in prostate cancer along with other endocrine and neurologic disorders. Here, we assessed the role of ZMIZ1, an AR co-activator, in regulating the activity of the AR with different lengths of polyQ tracts as ARQ9, ARQ24, and ARQ35 in prostate cancer cells. ZMIZ1, but not ZMIZ2 or ARA70, preferably augments ARQ9 induced androgen-dependent transcription on three different androgen-inducible promoter/reporter vectors. A strong protein-protein interaction between ZMIZ1 and ARQ9 proteins was shown by immunoprecipitation assays. In the presence of ZMIZ1, the N and C-terminal interaction of the ARQ9 was more pronounced than ARQ24 and ARQ35. Both Brg1 and BAF57, the components of SWI/SNF complexes, were shown to be involved in the enhancement of ZMIZ1 on AR activity. Using the chromatin immunoprecipitation assays (ChIP), we further demonstrated a strong recruitment of ZMIZ1 by ARQ9 on the promoter of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) gene. These results demonstrate a novel regulatory role of ZMIZ1 in modulating the polyQ tract length of AR in prostate cancer cells

    Diabetes mellitus, maternal adiposity, and insulin-dependent gestational diabetes are associated with COVID-19 in pregnancy: the INTERCOVID study

    BACKGROUND: Among nonpregnant individuals, diabetes mellitus and high body mass index increase the risk of COVID-19 and its severity.OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether diabetes mellitus and high body mass index are risk factors for COVID-19 in pregnancy and whether gestational diabetes mellitus is associated with COVID-19 diagnosis.STUDY DESIGN: INTERCOVID was a multinational study conducted between March 2020 and February 2021 in 43 institutions from 18 countries, enrolling 2184 pregnant women aged >= 18 years; a total of 2071 women were included in the analyses. For each woman diagnosed with COVID-19, 2 nondiagnosed women delivering or initiating antenatal care at the same institution were also enrolled. The main exposures were preexisting diabetes mellitus, high body mass index (overweight or obesity was defined as a body mass index >= 25 kg/m(2)), and gestational diabetes mellitus in pregnancy. The main outcome was a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 based on a real-time polymerase chain reaction test, antigen test, antibody test, radiological pulmonary findings, or >= 2 predefined COVID-19 symptoms at any time during pregnancy or delivery. Relationships of exposures and COVID-19 diagnosis were assessed using generalized linear models with a Poisson distribution and log link function, with robust standard errors to account for model misspecification. Furthermore, we conducted sensitivity analyses: (1) restricted to those with a real-time polymerase chain reaction test or an antigen test in the last week of pregnancy, (2) restricted to those with a real-time polymerase chain reaction test or an antigen test during the entire pregnancy, (3) generating values for missing data using multiple imputation, and (4) analyses controlling for month of enrollment. In addition, among women who were diagnosed with COVID-19, we examined whether having gestational diabetes mellitus, diabetes mellitus, or high body mass index increased the risk of having symptomatic vs asymptomatic COVID-19.RESULTS: COVID-19 was associated with preexisting diabetes mellitus (risk ratio, 1.94; 95% confidence interval, 1.55-2.42), overweight or obesity (risk ratio, 1.20; 95% confidence interval, 1.06-1.37), and gestational diabetes mellitus (risk ratio, 1.21; 95% confidence interval, 0.99-1.46). The gestational diabetes mellitus association was specifically among women requiring insulin, whether they were of normal weight (risk ratio, 1.79; 95% confidence interval, 1.06-3.01) or overweight or obese (risk ratio, 1.77; 95% confidence interval, 1.28-2.45). A somewhat stronger association with COVID-19 diagnosis was observed among women with preexisting diabetes mellitus, whether they were of normal weight (risk ratio, 1.93; 95% confidence interval, 1.18-3.17) or overweight or obese (risk ratio, 2.32; 95% confidence interval, 1.82-2.97). When the sample was restricted to those with a real-time polymerase chain reaction test or an antigen test in the week before delivery or during the entire pregnancy, including missing variables using imputation or controlling for month of enrollment, the observed associations were comparable.CONCLUSION: Diabetes mellitus and overweight or obesity were risk factors for COVID-19 diagnosis in pregnancy, and insulin-dependent gestational diabetes mellitus was associated with the disease. Therefore, it is essential that women with these comorbidities are vaccinated
