    Gauge boson fusion as a probe of inverted hierarchies in supersymmetry

    Supersymmetric scenarios with inverted mass hierarchy can be hard to observe at a hadron collider, particularly for the non-strongly interacting sector. We show how the production of stau-pairs via gauge boson fusion, along with hard jets in the high rapidity region, can be instrumental in uncovering the signatures of such scenarios.     Tailoring the carrier mobility of semiconducting nanowires by remote dielectrics

    The dielectric environment of thin semiconductor nanowires can affect the charge transport properties inside the wire. In this work, it is shown that Coulomb impurity scattering inside thin nanowires can be damped strongly by coating the wire with a high-k dielectric.     Evolution of Multipolar Magnetic Fields in Isolated Neutron Stars and its effect on Pulsar Radio Emission

    The evolution of the multipolar structure of the magnetic field of isolated neutron stars is studied assuming the currents to be confined to the crust. Lower orders (25\le 25) of multipole are seen to evolve in a manner similar to the dipole suggesting little or no evolution of the expected pulse shape. We also study the multifrequency polarization position angle traverse of PSR B0329+54 and find a significant frequency dependence above 2.7 GHz.     The Dynamics of Radio Galaxies and Double-Double Radio Galaxies

    Relativistic and magnetised plasma ejected by radio loud AGNs through jets form the diffuse lobes of radio galaxies. The radiating particles (electron/electron-positron) in lobes emit in radio via the synchrotron process and X-ray via inverse-Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons. The thermal environment around radio galaxies emits X-rays via the thermal bremsstrahlung process.     Rejuvenated radio galaxies J0041+3224 and J1835+6204 : how long can the quiescent phase of nuclear activity last?

    We present radio observations of two well-known doubledouble radio galaxies, J0041+3224 and J1835+6204, at frequencies ranging from 150 to 8460 MHz, using both the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the Very Large Array. These observations, over a large radio frequency range, enable us to determine the spectra of the inner and outer lobes. Our detailed spectral ageing analysis of their inner and outer lobes demonstrates that the outer doubles of doubledouble radio galaxies are created by the previous cycle of activity, while the inner doubles are due to the present cycle of activity. The (core subtracted) spectra of the inner doubles of both sources are power laws over a large frequency range. We found that the duration of the quiescent phase of J0041+3224 is between 4 and 28 per cent of the active phase of the previous activity. The outer north-western lobe of J1835+6204 has a compact hotspot and the regions of both the outer hotspots have close to power-law (rather than curved) spectra, which indicates that the outer lobes are still fed by jet material ejected in the previous episode just before the central engine stopped powering the jet. We estimate that the duration of the quiescent phase of J1835+6204 is ?5 per cent of the duration of the active phase of the previous activity. Therefore, we conclude that the duration of the quiescent phase can be as short as a few per cent of the active phase in radio galaxies of this type.Peer reviewe

    Friction force on slow charges moving over supported graphene

    We provide a theoretical model that describes the dielectric coupling of a 2D layer of graphene, represented by a polarization function in the Random Phase Approximation, and a semi-infinite 3D substrate, represented by a surface response function in a non-local formulation. We concentrate on the role of the dynamic response of the substrate for low-frequency excitations of the combined graphene-substrate system, which give rise to the stopping force on slowly moving charges above graphene. A comparison of the dielectric loss function with experimental HREELS data for graphene on a SiC substrate is used to estimate the damping rate in graphene and to reveal the importance of phonon excitations in an insulating substrate. A signature of the hybridization between graphene's pi plasmon and the substrate's phonon is found in the stopping force.     Our team partnered with UMass Memorial Medical Center’s Urology and Anesthesiology departments on a pilot patient-centered, physician-led, multidisciplinary team-based system of coordinated care for the surgical patient. The goals were to improve the patient experience, improve health care and reduce costs. Primary care physicians were surveyed to understand how surgical teams can better coordinate care with primary care. The results of the survey show that concise, useful communication about mutual patients is important to primary care physicians; there is no need for immediate follow-up appointments with primary care physicians unless necessary – appointments are recommended for two to four weeks after discharge; and defining the roles of primary care physicians and the surgeon is important

    Multi-lepton signals from the top-prime quark at the LHC

    We analyze the collider signatures of models with a vector-like top-prime quark and a massive color-octet boson. The top-prime quark mixes with the top quark in the Standard Model, leading to richer final states than ones that are investigated by experimental collaborations. We discuss the multi-lepton final states, and show that they can provide increased sensitivity to models with a top-prime quark and gluon-prime. Searches for new physics in high multiplicity events are an important component of the LHC program and complementary to analyses that have been performed.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
