A Machine Learning Approach for Player and Position Adjusted Expected Goals in Football (Soccer)

Football is a very result-driven industry, with goals being rarer than in most sports, so having further parameters to judge the performance of teams and individuals is key. Expected Goals (xG) allow further insight than just a scoreline. To tackle the need for further analysis in football, this paper uses machine learning applications that are developed and applied to Football Event data. From the concept, a Binary Classification problem is created whereby a probabilistic valuation is outputted using Logistic Regression and Gradient Boosting based approaches. The model successfully predicts xGs probability values for football players based on 15,575 shots. The proposed solution utilises StatsBomb as the data provider and an industry benchmark to tune the models in the right direction. The proposed ML solution for xG is further used to tackle the age-old cliche of: 'the ball has fallen to the wrong guy there'. The development of the model is used to adjust and gain more realistic values of expected goals than the general models show. To achieve this, this paper tackles Positional Adjusted xG, splitting the training data into Forward, Midfield, and Defence with the aim of providing insight into player qualities based on their positional sub-group. Positional Adjusted xG successfully predicts and proves that more attacking players are better at accumulating xG. The highest value belonged to Forwards followed by Midfielders and Defenders. Finally, this study has further developments into Player Adjusted xG with the aim of proving that Messi is statistically at a higher efficiency level than the average footballer. This is achieved by using Messi subset samples to quantify his qualities in comparison to the average xG models finding that Messi xG performs 347 xG higher than the general model outcome.Comment: 16 pages, 8 tables, 6 figure

Aim Depression and hopelessness, cause impairment in the quality of life and leads to the loss of one's efficiency are important problems. The purpose of this study is to search the frequency of depression and hopelessness and its relations with socio-demographic characteristics among medical students. Materials and Methods This is a cross sectional analytical study. It was conducted 2-4 March 2009 between. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students from the Faculty of Medicine, Suleyman Demirel University were included in the study. 236 of a total 330 students (68.5 %) participated in the study. A questionnaire which aims to determine the students’ socio-demographic characteristics, Beck depression inventory and Beck hopelessness scale were applied under observation to the participants. According to the Beck depression inventory, those who scored 17 and over were classified as possible depressive. Data were evaluated statistically. Results The average score of the students according to Beck hopelessness scale was found 5.3±4.6. According to Beck depression inventory 64 of the students (28.3%) were found to be possible depressive. The average Beck hopelessness scale score was higher for possible depressive students compared to the others (p=0.00). Depression scores was higher among the first year students compared to the others (p=0.03), higher among the females compared the males (p=0.02) and higher among dwelling in dorm compared to not dwelling in dorm (p=0.001). When the age of students, monthly income of family, the educational status of the parents were compared with hopelessness and depression rates there was no statistically significant relation. Conclusion As a result, depression rates were high in basic medical students, furthermore hopelessness scores were found high among possible depressive students. Medical students should be given guidance and counseling service. Effective monitoring and prevention programs should be developed in order to lower the possible effects of depression and hopelessness on their future professional lives

In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of mobbing displayed towards teachers on their levels of stress, burnout, job satisfaction and life satisfaction. The target population of this study consists of primary school teachers working in Elazığ downtown in 2008-2009 fall semester. The questionnaires were administered to a sample of 300 teachers that were selected randomly from this population and 237 of the questionnaires were validated and taken into analysis. Using LISREL 8.51 version, a structural equation model was developed. According to this model; mobbing positively influences on stress and burnout and negatively influences on job and life satisfaction. Mobbing influences; on burnout through the partial mediation effect of stress, on job satisfaction through the partial mediation effect of stress and burnout, and finally on life satisfaction through the partial mediation effect of stress, burnout and job satisfaction. © 2012, Hacettepe University. Ammonium salts of p-methoxyphenyldithiophosphonic acid O-alkyl esters (H3CO-C6H4-(RO)P(S)S-NH 4 + ; R = C2H5,-CH2CH 2CH2CH2-, and cyclopentyl) and their complexes with Ni2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+ were prepared. 2,4-Bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3,2,4-dithiadiphosphetane-2,4-disulfide, the so-called Lawesson reagent, was treated with the corresponding alcohol to give the O-alkyl ester of the acid. Dry NH3 was then purged through the solution of this ester to form the ammonium salt of the O-alkyl dithiophosphonic acids. Nickel complexes of these ligands were formed in acetic acid, while zinc and cadmium complexes were formed in water and an ethanol medium, respectively. The geometry of the coordinated atoms was square planar with Ni2+ and tetrahedral with Zn2+ and Cd2+. Using an alkanediol, two dithiophosphonic acids were bridged, thus forming a ligand with four S atoms for coordination. The zinc and cadmium complexes of these tetradentate ligands were also synthesized. © Pleiades publishing, Inc. 2006
