    Local Nature of Coset Models

    The local algebras of the maximal Coset model C_max associated with a chiral conformal subtheory A\subset B are shown to coincide with the local relative commutants of A in B, provided A contains a stress energy tensor. Making the same assumption, the adjoint action of the unique inner-implementing representation U^A associated with A\subset B on the local observables in B is found to define net-endomorphisms of B. This property is exploited for constructing from B a conformally covariant holographic image in 1+1 dimensions which proves useful as a geometric picture for the joint inclusion A\vee C_max \subset B. Immediate applications to the analysis of current subalgebras are given and the relation to normal canonical tensor product subfactors is clarified.     Endotaxial Si nanolines in Si(001):H

    We present a detailed study of the structural and electronic properties of a self-assembled silicon nanoline embedded in the H-terminated silicon (001) surface, known as the Haiku stripe. The nanoline is a perfectly straight and defect free endotaxial structure of huge aspect ratio; it can grow micrometre long at a constant width of exactly four Si dimers (1.54nm). Another remarkable property is its capacity to be exposed to air without suffering any degradation. The nanoline grows independently of any step edges at tunable densities, from isolated nanolines to a dense array of nanolines. In addition to these unique structural characteristics, scanning tunnelling microscopy and density functional theory reveal a one-dimensional state confined along the Haiku core. This nanoline is a promising candidate for the long sought after electronic solid-state one-dimensional model system to explore the fascinating quantum properties emerging in such reduced dimensionality.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    The correlation between auditory speech sensitivity and speaker recognition ability

    In various applications of forensic phonetics the question arises as to how far aural-perceptual speaker recognition performance is reliable. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the relationship between speaker recognition results and human perception/production abilities like musicality or speech sensitivity. In this study, performance in a speaker recognition experiment and a speech sensitivity test are correlated. The results show a moderately significant positive correlation between the two tasks. Generally, performance in the speaker recognition task was better than in the speech sensitivity test. Professionals in speech and singing yielded a more homogeneous correlation than non-experts. Training in speech as well as choir-singing seems to have a positive effect on performance in speaker recognition. It may be concluded, firstly, that in cases where the reliability of voice line-up results or the credibility of a testimony have to be considered, the speech sensitivity test could be a useful indicator. Secondly, the speech sensitivity test might be integrated into the canon of possible procedures for the accreditation of forensic phoneticians. Both tests may also be used in combination

    One dimensional Si-in-Si(001) template for single-atom wire growth

    Single atom metallic wires of arbitrary length are of immense technological and scientific interest. We describe a novel silicon-only template enabling the self-organised growth of isolated micrometer long surface and subsurface single-atom chains. It consists of a one dimensional, defect-free reconstruction - the Haiku core, here revealed for the first time in details - self-assembled on hydrogenated Si(001) terraces, independent of any step edges. We discuss the potential of this Si-in-Si template as an appealing alternative to vicinal surfaces for nanoscale patterning.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure

    Harmonically confined, semiflexible polymer in a channel: response to a stretching force and spatial distribution of the endpoints

    We consider an inextensible, semiflexible polymer or worm-like chain which is confined in the transverse direction by a parabolic potential and subject to a longitudinal force at the ends, so that the polymer is stretched out and backfolding is negligible. Simple analytic expressions for the partition function, valid in this regime, are obtained for chains of arbitrary length with a variety of boundary conditions at the ends.     Biodiversity and species-environment relationships of the demersal fish assemblage at the Great Meteor Seamount (subtropical NE Atlantic), sampled by different trawls

    Quantitative data collected with different bottom trawls at the Great Meteor Seamount (subtropical NE Atlantic, 30°N; 28.5°W) in 1967, 1970 and 1998 are compared. Bootstrap estimates of total catch per unit effort increased from 6.96 and 10.8 ind. m–1 h–1 in 1967 and 1970, respectively, to 583.98 ind. m–1 h–1 in 1998. Gear effects and an effect of gear over time accounted for 47.1% and 20% of species variability. Further significant factors were time of day and habitat, while season was not significant. A total of 43 species was collected. Including supplementary species information, a grand total of 46 species was found associated with the Great Meteor Seamount. Diversity was higher in 1967 and 1970 (Shannon's diversity: H′=2.5 and 1.6) than in 1998 (H′=0.9). Species–environment relationships are discussed in terms of a sound-scattering layer–interception hypothesis, i.e. utilisation of prey from a diurnally moving sound-scattering layer for the bentho-pelagic community. This is probably augmented by concentration effects in a circular current around the seamount (Taylor-column). Long-term changes are discussed with respect to a decrease in biodiversity due to considerable increases in Macroramphosus scolopax and Capros aper.     Die Abrundung der Nase von Flugkörpern im Überschallbereich hat durch die neuere Entwicklung der Raumfahrt-Aerodynamik, insbesondere im Hinblick auf Fragen des Wärmeüberganges, wesentliche Bedeutung erlangt. Um einen Beitrag zu diesem Problemkreis zu geben. wurden im kleinen Überschall'Windkanal der Deutschen Forschungsanstalt für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DFL) einige aerodynamische Untersuchungen an Kegeln mit verschiedenen Abrundungsradien der Nase ausgeführt. Es werden die Ergebnisse von Messungen an einem Kegel mit einem halben Kegelwinkel von [gamma] = 10° mitgeteilt. Die Untersuchungen umfassen die Bestimmung des Stoßabstandes, der Druckverteilung und des Vorkörperwiderstandes bei verschiedener Abrundung der Kegelspitze im Machzahlbereich von Ma = 2 bis 4. Die Ergebnisse zeigen eine Abnahme des Verhältnisses von Stoßabstand zu Nasenradius mit zunehmender Abrundung und Machzahl, wobei jedoch der absolute Stoßabstand mit der Nasenabrundung zunimmt. Die Größe der Abrundung hat keinen Einfluß auf die Druckverteilung, während der Vorkörperwiderstand mit zunehmender Abstumpfung sehr stark ansteigt.Blunting of the nose of missiles in supersonic flow has attained an essential importance as a consequence of the modern development of space aerodynamics, particularly in view of the problems connected with heat transfer. To give a contribution to these problems, some aerodynamic investigations on cones with various nose radii have been carried out in the small supersonic wind tunnel of the DFL. Results of measurements on a cone with half cone angle of [gamma] = 10° are presented. The investigations include the determination of the shock stand-off distance, the pressure distribution, and the drag of the forebody at various nose curvatures of the cone the Mach number ranging from 2 to 4. The results show that the ratio of shock stand-off distanee to radius of curvature decreases with increasing curvature and Mach number, while, however, the absolute shock distance increases with the nose curvature. The degree of vurvature has no influence on the pressure distribution whereas the forebody drag rises considerably with increasing bluntness

    Shapes of Semiflexible Polymers in Confined Spaces

    We investigate the conformations of a semiflexible polymer confined to a square box. Results of Monte Carlo simulations show the existence of a shape transition when the persistence length of the polymer becomes comparable to the dimensions of box. An order parameter is introduced to quantify this behavior. A simple mean-field model is constructed to study the effect of the shape transition on the effective persistence length of the polymer.Comment: 8 pages, 20 figure

    A three-dimensional model for stage I-crack propagation

    The propagation of short fatigue cracks is simulated by means of a three-dimensional model. Under loading conditions in the high cycle fatigue regime the growth of these cracks can determine up to 90% of the lifetime of a component. Stage I-cracks often grow on slip bands and exhibit strong interactions with microstructural features such as grain boundaries. Experimental investigations have shown that the crack propagation rate decreases significantly when the crack tip approaches a grain boundary and even a complete stop of crack propagation is possible. In order to consider the real three-dimensional orientation of a slip plane an existing two-dimensional mechanism-based model (Künkler el al., 2008) is extended to simulate the propagation of a three-dimensional surface crack. The crack geometry is modelled using dislocation loops (Hills et al., 1996), which represent the relative displacement between the crack flanks. To describe the propagation of stage Icracks elastic-plastic material behaviour is considered by allowing a plastic deformation due to slip on the active slip plane. The extension of the plastic zone is blocked by the grain boundary. The crack propagation law is based on the range of the crack tip slide displacement, which is obtained from the plastic solution. Behind the grain boundary the shear stress field is evaluated. Results show that a high twist angle between the slip planes causes a significant decrease in the stresses, which can yield a crack stop

    A new Retention Index for the Central Baltic Sea: Long-Term Hydrodynamic Modelling Used to Improve Baltic Sprat, Sprattus sprattus, Recruitment Models

    To study inter-annual differences in drift patterns of larval sprat from the Bornholm Basin, we used a 3D, eddy-resolving circulation model of the Baltic Sea and simulated the drift of Lagrangian particles for each of 24 years (1979-2002) of available forcing data. We observed that in some years particles were transported almost completely out of the basin, whereas circulation in other years retained the majority of drifters within the seeding area (Bornholm Basin). A new retention index was derived that is associated to age 0 sprat recruitment in ICES Subdivision 25, estimated from area-disaggregated MSVPA runs. The significant linear relationship (P 80%) than those derived from particles released earlier into the model domain. This intra-annual pattern may suggest that recruitment success in central Baltic sprat was – at least during the last decade - predominantly determined by the relative survival of larval cohorts emerging late in the spawning season. The index is significantly cross-correlated to other environmental time series, most importantly annual surface temperature in August, which makes it difficult to conclude on the processes crucial for central Baltic sprat recruitment success
