    Critical Behavior of Light

    Light is shown to exhibit critical and tricritical behavior in passive mode-locked lasers with externally injected pulses. It is a first and unique example of critical phenomena in a one-dimensional many body light-mode system. The phase diagrams consist of regimes with continuous wave, driven para-pulses, spontaneous pulses via mode condensation, and heterogeneous pulses, separated by phase transition lines which terminate with critical or tricritical points. Enhanced nongaussian fluctuations and collective dynamics are observed at the critical and tricritical points, showing a mode system analog of the critical opalescence phenomenon. The critical exponents are calculated and shown to comply with the mean field theory, which is rigorous in the light system.Comment: RevTex, 5 pages, 3 figure

    Brillouin amplification in phase coherent transfer of optical frequencies over 480 km fiber

    We describe the use of fiber Brillouin amplification (FBA) for the coherent transmission of optical frequencies over a 480 km long optical fiber link. FBA uses the transmission fiber itself for efficient, bi-directional coherent amplification of weak signals with pump powers around 30 mW. In a test setup we measured the gain and the achievable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of FBA and compared it to that of the widely used uni-directional Erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) and to our recently built bi-directional EDFA. We measured also the phase noise introduced by the FBA and used a new and simple technique to stabilize the frequency of the FBA pump laser. We then transferred a stabilized laser frequency over a wide area network with a total fiber length of 480 km using only one intermediate FBA station. After compensating the noise induced by the fiber, the frequency is delivered to the user end with an uncertainty below 2x10-18 and an instability sigma(tau) = 2x10-14/(tau/second)

    The F tra operon region that includes genes trbA, traQ, and trbB was analyzed. Determination of the DNA sequence showed that on the tra operon strand, the trbA gene begins 19 nucleotides (nt) distal to traF and encodes a 115-amino-acid, Mr-12,946 protein. The traQ gene begins 399 nt distal to trbA and encodes a 94-amino-acid, Mr-10,867 protein. The trbB gene, which encodes a 179-amino-acid, Mr-19,507 protein, was found to overlap slightly with traQ; its start codon begins 11 nt before the traQ stop codon. Protein analysis and subcellular fractionation of the products expressed by these genes indicated that the trbB product was processed and that the mature form of this protein accumulated in the periplasm. In contrast, the protein products of trbA and traQ appeared to be unprocessed, membrane-associated proteins. The DNA sequence also revealed the presence of a previously unsuspected locus, artA, in the region between trbA and traQ. The artA open reading frame was found to lie on the DNA strand complementary to that of the F tra operon and could encode a 104-amino-acid, 12,132-dalton polypeptide. Since this sequence would not be expressed as part of the tra operon, the activity of a potential artA promoter region was assessed in a galK fusion vector system. In vivo utilization of the artA promoter and translational start sites was also examined by testing expression of an artA-beta-galactosidase fusion protein. These results indicated that the artA gene is expressed from its own promoter

    Preliminary measurements of turbulence and environmental parameters in a sub-tropical estuary of Eastern Australia

    In natural systems, mixing is driven by turbulence, but current knowledge is very limited in estuarine zones where predictions of contaminant dispersion are often inaccurate. A series of detailed field studies was conducted in a small subtropical creek in eastern Australia. Hydrodynamic, physio-chemical and ecological measurements were conducted simultaneously to assess the complexity of the estuarine zone and the interactions between turbulence and environment. The measurements were typically performed at high frequency over a tidal cycle. The results provide an original data set to complement long-term monitoring and the basis for a more detailed study of mixing in sub-tropical systems. Unlike many long-term observations, velocity and water quality scalars were measured herein with sufficient spatial and temporal resolutions to determine quantities of interest in the study of turbulence, while ecological indicators were sampled systematically and simultaneously. In particular the results yielded contrasted outcomes, and the finding impacts on the selection process for key water quality indicators
