    Genomic relatedness within five common Finnish Campylobacter jejuni pulsed-field gel electrophoresis genotypes studied by amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis, ribotyping and serotyping

    Thirty-five Finnish Campylobacter jejuni strains with five SmaI/SacII pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) genotypes selected among human and chicken isolates from 1997 and 1998 were used for comparison of their PFGE patterns, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) patterns, HaeIII ribotypes, and heat-stable (HS) serotypes. The discriminatory power of PFGE, AFLP, and ribotyping with HaeIII were shown to be at the same level for this selected set of strains, and these methods assigned the strains into the same groups. The PFGE and AFLP patterns within a genotype were highly similar, indicating genetic relatedness. The same HS serotypes were distributed among different genotypes, and different serotypes were identified within one genotype. HS serotype 12 was only associated with the combined genotype G1 (PFGE-AFLP-ribotype). These studies using polyphasic genotyping methods suggested that common Finnish C. jejuni genotypes form genetic lineages which colonize both humans and chickens

    Respiratory response to walking training in overweight men

    The aim of the study was to follow up changes in physiological responses to incremental exercise after 4 weeks of moderate-intensity training in overweight men. Prior to the training, all subjects underwent 2 identical control tests (C1 and C2). Each test included three treadmill running exercises, starting at the treadmill speed of 4 km/h, and increased by 1 km/h at the end of each 4 min stage. The same protocol was repeated after 4 weeks of training (T1). The subjects’ body mass index was not changed after the training. Heart rate, oxygen uptake and blood pressure were significantly reduced in C2 as compared with C1 test. After 4 weeks of training the respiratory frequency (Rf), was lower than that in the C2 but a significant difference was noted only at the running speeds of 4 and 6kmhr-1 (P<0.04). Tidal volume (TV) increased after training in comparison with C2. A significant difference was found at the running speeds of 5 and 6 km/h (P<0.03 and P<0.04, respectively). Minute ventilation (VE) was not significantly different between the tests. The present study showed that in obese subjects 4 weeks of moderate uncontrolled walking training is advantageous for changes in the respiratory pattern. However, it is too short for the cardiovascular adaptation and body weight loss. Familiarization of the subjects with the experimental procedure diminished activation of the sympathetic nervous system and has a important role for the results interpretation

    Imidotungsten(VI) complexes with chelating amino and imino phenolates

    The reaction of WOCl(4) with 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-((isopropylamino)methyl)phenol followed by the reaction with phenyl isocyanate leads to the formation of imidotungsten(VI) complex [W(NPh)Cl(3)(OC(6)H(3)(CH(2)NH-i-Pr)-2-t-Bu(2)-4,6)] 4 with a chelating aminophenolate ligand. When the same procedure was applied using aminophenols with bulkier substituents in the amino group, the final product was an unexpected Schiff-base complex [W(NPh)Cl(3)(OC(6)H(3)(CH = NPh)-2-t-Bu(2)-4,6)] 5, where the ligand is derived from 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-((phenylimino)methyl)phenol. Complex 5 is also formed in the thermal degradation of 4. On the whole, 5 appears to be formed by a disproportionation of intermediate compounds, which are analogous to complex 4. The solid-state structures of 4 and 5 have been determined by X-ray crystallography whereas the solution structures were studied by (1)H and (13)C NMR

    Olive phenology as a sensitive indicator of future climatic warming in the Mediterranean

    Experimental and modelling work suggests a strong dependence of olive flowering date on spring temperatures. Since airborne pollen concentrations reflect the flowering phenology of olive populations within a radius of 50 km, they may be a sensitive regional indicator of climatic warming. We assessed this potential sensitivity with phenology models fitted to flowering dates inferred from maximum airborne pollen data. Of four models tested, a thermal time model gave the best fit for Montpellier, France, and was the most effective at the regional scale, providing reasonable predictions for 10 sites in the western Mediterranean. This model was forced with replicated future temperature simulations for the western Mediterranean from a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model (GCM). The GCM temperatures rose by 4·5 °C between 1990 and 2099 with a 1% per year increase in greenhouse gases, and modelled flowering date advanced at a rate of 6·2 d per °C. The results indicated that this long-term regional trend in phenology might be statistically significant as early as 2030, but with marked spatial variation in magnitude, with the calculated flowering date between the 1990s and 2030s advancing by 3–23 d. Future monitoring of airborne olive pollen may therefore provide an early biological indicator of climatic warming in the Mediterranean

    Universal Behaviour of the Superfluid Fraction and Tc of He-3 in 99.5% Open Aerogel

    We have investigated the superfluid transition of He-3 in a 99.5% porosity silica aerogel. This very dilute sample shows behaviour intermediary between bulk He-3 and He-3 confined to the denser aerogels previously studied. We present data on both the superfluid transition temperature and the superfluid density and compare our results with previous measurements. Finally, we show that the suppression of the superfluid transition temperature and suppression of the superfluid density of He-3 in aerogel follow a universal relation for a range of aerogel samples.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures; 1 new figure, minor change

    Residual cognitive deficits 50 years after lead poisoning during childhood

    The long term neurobehavioural consequences of childhood lead poisoning are not known. In this study adult subjects with a documented history of lead poisoning before age 4 and matched controls were examined with an abbreviated battery of neuropsychological tests including measures of attention, reasoning, memory, motor speed, and current mood. The subjects exposed to lead were inferior to controls on almost all of the cognitive tasks. This pattern of widespread deficits resembles that found in children evaluated at the time of acute exposure to lead rather than the more circumscribed pattern typically seen in adults exposed to lead. Despite having completed as many years of schooling as controls, the subjects exposed to lead were lower in lifetime occupational status. Within the exposed group, performance on the neuropsychological battery and occupational status were related, consistent with the presumed impact of limitations in neuropsychological functioning on everyday life. The results suggest that many subjects exposed to lead suffered acute encephalopathy in childhood which resolved into a chronic subclinical encephalopathy with associated cognitive dysfunction still evident in adulthood. These findings lend support to efforts to limit exposure to lead in childhood

    Morphologic characteristics of posterior polymorphous dystrophy. A study of nine corneas and review of the literature

    Based on their own study of nine corneas with clinically documented posterior polymorphous dystrophy and a review of the literature, the authors describe the morphologic features of this entity. Study by phase contrast light microscopy and transmission and scanning electron microscopy found that changes were primarily in the endothelium and consisted of endothelial cell degeneration and loss with focal fibroblastic and epithelial-like cell transformation. Secondary alterations of Descemet's membrane were seen; they consisted of abnormal lamination with deposition of abnormal collagen material, particularly in the posterior collagen layer, and formation of guttate excrescences and pits.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/24707/1/0000128.pd

    Parameter and model uncertainty in a life-table model for fine particles (PM2.5): a statistical modeling study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The estimation of health impacts involves often uncertain input variables and assumptions which have to be incorporated into the model structure. These uncertainties may have significant effects on the results obtained with model, and, thus, on decision making. Fine particles (PM<sub>2.5</sub>) are believed to cause major health impacts, and, consequently, uncertainties in their health impact assessment have clear relevance to policy-making. We studied the effects of various uncertain input variables by building a life-table model for fine particles.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Life-expectancy of the Helsinki metropolitan area population and the change in life-expectancy due to fine particle exposures were predicted using a life-table model. A number of parameter and model uncertainties were estimated. Sensitivity analysis for input variables was performed by calculating rank-order correlations between input and output variables. The studied model uncertainties were (i) plausibility of mortality outcomes and (ii) lag, and parameter uncertainties (iii) exposure-response coefficients for different mortality outcomes, and (iv) exposure estimates for different age groups. The monetary value of the years-of-life-lost and the relative importance of the uncertainties related to monetary valuation were predicted to compare the relative importance of the monetary valuation on the health effect uncertainties.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The magnitude of the health effects costs depended mostly on discount rate, exposure-response coefficient, and plausibility of the cardiopulmonary mortality. Other mortality outcomes (lung cancer, other non-accidental and infant mortality) and lag had only minor impact on the output. The results highlight the importance of the uncertainties associated with cardiopulmonary mortality in the fine particle impact assessment when compared with other uncertainties.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>When estimating life-expectancy, the estimates used for cardiopulmonary exposure-response coefficient, discount rate, and plausibility require careful assessment, while complicated lag estimates can be omitted without this having any major effect on the results.</p
