Soft capacitor fibers using conductive polymers for electronic textiles
A novel, highly flexible, conductive polymer-based fiber with high electric
capacitance is reported. In its crossection the fiber features a periodic
sequence of hundreds of conductive and isolating plastic layers positioned
around metallic electrodes. The fiber is fabricated using fiber drawing method,
where a multi-material macroscopic preform is drawn into a sub-millimeter
capacitor fiber in a single fabrication step. Several kilometres of fibers can
be obtained from a single preform with fiber diameters ranging between 500um
-1000um. A typical measured capacitance of our fibers is 60-100 nF/m and it is
independent of the fiber diameter. For comparison, a coaxial cable of the
comparable dimensions would have only ~0.06nF/m capacitance. Analysis of the
fiber frequency response shows that in its simplest interrogation mode the
capacitor fiber has a transverse resistance of 5 kOhm/L, which is inversely
proportional to the fiber length L and is independent of the fiber diameter.
Softness of the fiber materials, absence of liquid electrolyte in the fiber
structure, ease of scalability to large production volumes, and high
capacitance of our fibers make them interesting for various smart textile
applications ranging from distributed sensing to energy storage

Rietveld-based quantitative phase analysis of sugars in confectionery
Sugars are a near-ubiquitous ingredient in food products, yet rising rates of obesity and related illnesses have prompted a drive to reduce their content. The use of amorphous sugars in confectionery may be one way of achieving this by providing a similarly sweet sensation due to increased dissolution rate. However, accurate amorphous and crystalline form characterisation and quantification of complex foodstuffs can be difficult.
In this study, a method for the quantification of crystalline and amorphous sugars in chocolate precursors, using powder X ray powder diffraction, is presented. The method was first validated by the use of known compositions of mixtures of amorphous and crystalline sugars, then employed in assessing two chocolate crumb samples. The results show that the method can reliably determine the absolute quantity of amorphous and crystalline components in a confectionery sample, whilst maintaining sample integrity, apart from the addition of an inert internal standard. As such, it is a valuable addition to other techniques currently used
The potential for sand dams to increase the adaptive capacity of East African drylands to climate change
Drylands are home to more than two billion people and are characterised by frequent, severe droughts. Such extreme events are expected to be exacerbated in the near future by climate change. A potentially simple and cost-effective mitigation measure against drought periods is sand dams. This little-known technology aims to promote subsoil rainwater storage to support dryland agro-ecosystems. To date, there is little long-term empirical analysis that tests the effectiveness of this approach during droughts. This study addresses this shortcoming by utilising multi-year satellite imagery to monitor the effect of droughts at sand dam locations. A time series of satellite images was analysed to compare vegetation at sand dam sites and control sites over selected periods of drought, using the normalised difference vegetation index. The results show that vegetation biomass was consistently and significantly higher at sand dam sites during periods of extended droughts. It is also shown that vegetation at sand dam sites recovers more quickly from drought. The observed findings corroborate modelling-based research which identified related impacts on ground water, land cover, and socio-economic indicators. Using past periods of drought as an analogue to future climate change conditions, this study indicates that sand dams have potential to increase adaptive capacity and resilience to climate change in drylands. It therefore can be concluded that sand dams enhance the resilience of marginal environments and increase the adaptive capacity of drylands. Sand dams can therefore be a promising adaptation response to the impacts of future climate change on drylands
Taxonomy, nomenclature and phylogeny of three cladosporium-like hyphomycetes, Sorocybe resinae, Seifertia azaleae and the Hormoconis anamorph of Amorphotheca resinae
Using morphological characters, cultural characters, large subunit and
internal transcribed spacer rDNA (ITS) sequences, and provisions of the
International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, this paper attempts to resolve
the taxonomic and nomenclatural confusion surrounding three species of
cladosporium-like hyphomycetes. The type specimen of Hormodendrum
resinae, the basis for the use of the epithet resinae for the
creosote fungus {either as Hormoconis resinae or Cladosporium
resinae) represents the mononematous synanamorph of the synnematous,
resinicolous fungus Sorocybe resinae. The phylogenetic relationships
of the creosote fungus, which is the anamorph of Amorphotheca
resinae, are with the family Myxotrichaceae, whereas S.
resinae is related to Capronia (Chaetothyriales,
Herpotrichiellaceae). Our data support the segregation of
Pycnostysanus azaleae, the cause of bud blast of rhododendrons, in
the recently described anamorph genus Seifertia, distinct from
Sorocybe; this species is related to the Dothideomycetes but
its exact phylogenetic placement is uncertain. To formally stabilize the name
of the anamorph of the creosote fungus, conservation of Hormodendrum
resinae with a new holotype should be considered. The paraphyly of the
family Myxotrichaceae with the Amorphothecaceae suggested by
ITS sequences should be confirmed with additional genes
Nuclear effects in the Drell-Yan process at very high energies
We study Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production in proton(deuterium)-nucleus and
in nucleus-nucleus collisions within the light-cone color dipole formalism.
This approach is especially suitable for predicting nuclear effects in the DY
cross section for heavy ion collisions, as it provides the impact parameter
dependence of nuclear shadowing and transverse momentum broadening, quantities
that are not available from the standard parton model. For p(D)+A collisions we
calculate nuclear shadowing and investigate nuclear modification of the DY
transverse momentum distribution at RHIC and LHC for kinematics corresponding
to coherence length much longer than the nuclear size. Calculations are
performed separately for transversely and longitudinally polarized DY photons,
and predictions are presented for the dilepton angular distribution.
Furthermore, we calculate nuclear broadening of the mean transverse momentum
squared of DY dileptons as function of the nuclear mass number and energy. We
also predict nuclear effects for the cross section of the DY process in heavy
ion collisions. We found a substantial nuclear shadowing for valence quarks,

Effectiveness of interventions to promote healthy diet in primary care: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials
Background
A diet rich in fruit, vegetables and dietary fibre and low in fat is associated with reduced risk of chronic disease. This review aimed to estimate the effectiveness of interventions to promote healthy diet for primary prevention among participants attending primary care.<p></p>
Methods
A systematic review of trials using individual or cluster randomisation of interventions delivered in primary care to promote dietary change over 12 months in healthy participants free from chronic disease or defined high risk states. Outcomes were change in fruit and vegetable intake, consumption of total fat and fibre and changes in serum cholesterol concentration.<p></p>
Results
Ten studies were included with 12,414 participants. The design and delivery of interventions were diverse with respect to grounding in behavioural theory and intervention intensity. A meta-analysis of three studies showed an increase in fruit consumption of 0.25 (0.01 to 0.49) servings per day, with an increase in vegetable consumption of 0.25 (0.06 to 0.44) serving per day. A further three studies that reported on fruit and vegetable consumption together showed a pooled increment of 0.50 (0.13 to 0.87) servings per day. The pooled effect on consumption of dietary fibre, from four studies, was estimated to be 1.97 (0.43 to 3.52) gm fibre per day. Data from five studies showed a mean decrease in total fat intake of 5.2% of total energy (1.5 to 8.8%). Data from three studies showed a mean decrease in serum cholesterol of 0.10 (-0.19 to 0.00) mmol/L.<p></p>
Conclusion
Presently-reported interventions to promote healthy diet for primary prevention in primary care, which illustrate a diverse range of intervention methods, may yield small beneficial changes in consumption of fruit, vegetables, fibre and fat over 12 months. The present results do not exclude the possibility that more effective intervention strategies might be developed.<p></p>
The statistical neuroanatomy of frontal networks in the macaque
We were interested in gaining insight into the functional properties of frontal networks based upon their anatomical inputs. We took a neuroinformatics approach, carrying out maximum likelihood hierarchical cluster analysis on 25 frontal cortical areas based upon their anatomical connections, with 68 input areas representing exterosensory, chemosensory, motor, limbic, and other frontal inputs. The analysis revealed a set of statistically robust clusters. We used these clusters to divide the frontal areas into 5 groups, including ventral-lateral, ventral-medial, dorsal-medial, dorsal-lateral, and caudal-orbital groups. Each of these groups was defined by a unique set of inputs. This organization provides insight into the differential roles of each group of areas and suggests a gradient by which orbital and ventral-medial areas may be responsible for decision-making processes based on emotion and primary reinforcers, and lateral frontal areas are more involved in integrating affective and rational information into a common framework
