    Soroprevalência da toxocaríase humana em três comunidades andinas do Nordeste de Lima, Peru

    The aim of this study was to assess the seroprevalence of human toxocariasis in three Andean communities from the Northeast of Lima, Peru. A total of 303 subjects including children and adults were studied and blood samples were collected to detect anti-Toxocara antibodies by ELISA-IgG test and by hematological examination; stool samples were collected also for parasitological examination. The overall seroprevalence of toxocariasis observed in the total population was 20.46%, with a significant high proportion in children from one to 10 years old (p = 0.034). Among the subjects with positive serology, 32.26% of them had respiratory disturbances, 22.58% hepatomegaly, 17.74% ocular signs or symptoms, 14.51% abdominal pain, 9.68% neurological involvement, and 4.84% cutaneous signs, but none of these clinical features were associated to a positive serology by multivariate analysis. Furthermore, 79.03% of seropositive subjects also harbored at least one intestinal parasite, which was associated to a positive serology (p < 0.05). The presence of pets within the houses, a previous history of pica or geophagia and the use of public places were also present in this population, but only the latter was associated to the serology (p < 0.05). In conclusion, clinical, serological, and epidemiological evidences for larval Toxocara infection were found in the studied population.O propósito do presente trabalho foi estimar a soroprevalência da toxocaríase humana em três comunidades andinas do Nordeste de Lima, Peru. Foi estudado um total de 303 pessoas, entre crianças e adultos. Foram coletadas amostras de sangue para a detecção de anticorpos anti-Toxocara e para a análise hematológica, além de amostras fecais para o exame parasitológico. A soroprevalência geral da população foi de 20,46% com proporção significativamente maior de positividade em crianças de um a 10 anos (p = 0,034). Das pessoas com sorologia positiva, 32,26% apresentavam sintomas respiratórios, 22,58% moléstias hepáticas, 17,74% manifestações oculares, 14,51% dor abdominal, e 4,84% sinais cutâneos. Além disso, 79,03% das pessoas com sorologia positiva tinham pelo menos algum parasito intestinal com associação significativa (p < 0.05). A presença de cachorros dentro das casas, história de pica ou geofagia e o uso dos lugares públicos também estiveram presentes nesta população, mas o ultimo deles só esteve associado com a sorologia positiva (p < 0.05). Conclui-se que existem evidências clínicas, sorológicas e epidemiológicas de infecção por larvas de Toxocara na população estudada

    EVALUACIÓN POSNATAL DE LAS ARTERIOLAS PULMONARES EN CRÍAS DE ALPACA

    In the postnatal phase in mammalians, the vasodilatation of the pulmonary arterioles is critical, since this will affect the amount of blood passing through the alveoli for oxygenation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the diameter, the thickness of the muscle layer and the relationship muscle layer/arteriolar diameter (CM/DA) as indication of changes in the vascular lumen in the postnatal period of baby alpacas. Lungs of 36 alpacas between 1 to 45 days of age were obtained according to nine age groups (one group each 5 days of age). The lung histological sections were stained with Mallory’s phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin. The arteriolar diameter showed a significant increase (p&lt;0.05) between age groups 1 and 2 versus 7, 8 and 9. The thickness of the muscle layer showed no significant changes between groups, while the CM/DA relationship values decreased with age (groups 1 and 2 were statistical different of groups 6, 7, 8 and 9; p&lt;0.05). It is concluded that the CM/DA relationship decreases and the lumen of pulmonary arterioles increases according to age, and this is due to increased arteriolar diameter (p&lt;0.05) but not to thickness of smooth muscles.En la etapa posnatal de mamíferos es de vital importancia la vasodilatación de las arteriolas pulmonares, pues de estas dependerá la cantidad de sangre que pase por los alveolos para ser oxigenada. El presente estudio tuvo por objetivo evaluar el diámetro, el grosor de la capa muscular y la relación capa muscular/diámetro arteriolar (CM/DA) para evaluar los cambios de la luz vascular en la etapa posnatal de crías de alpaca. Se utilizaron pulmones de 36 alpacas de 1 a 45 días de edad, distribuidos en nueve grupos etarios (un grupo por cada cinco días de edad). Los cortes histológicos de pulmón fueron coloreados con hematoxilina fosfotúngstica de Mallory. El diámetro arteriolar pulmonar mostró un incremento significativo (p&lt;0.05) entre los grupos etarios 1 y 2 versus 7, 8 y 9. El grosor de la capa muscular no evidenció cambios significativos entre grupos, mientras que los valores de la relación CM/DA se incrementaron con la edad, habiendo diferencias estadísticas entre grupos etarios 1 y 2 versus 6, 7, 8 y 9 (p&lt;0.05). Se concluye que la relación CM/DA disminuye y el lumen de las arteriolas pulmonares aumenta a medida que la edad de los animales se incrementa, debido al aumento del diámetro arteriolar pulmonar (p&lt;0.05), mas no del grosor del músculo liso

    The VVV Templates Project. Towards an Automated Classification of VVV Light-Curves. I. Building a database of stellar variability in the near-infrared

    Context. The Vista Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) ESO Public Survey is a variability survey of the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the disk carried out from 2010 on ESO Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA). VVV will eventually deliver a deep near-IR atlas with photometry and positions in five passbands (ZYJHK_S) and a catalogue of 1-10 million variable point sources - mostly unknown - which require classifications. Aims. The main goal of the VVV Templates Project, that we introduce in this work, is to develop and test the machine-learning algorithms for the automated classification of the VVV light-curves. As VVV is the first massive, multi-epoch survey of stellar variability in the near-infrared, the template light-curves that are required for training the classification algorithms are not available. In the first paper of the series we describe the construction of this comprehensive database of infrared stellar variability. Methods. First we performed a systematic search in the literature and public data archives, second, we coordinated a worldwide observational campaign, and third we exploited the VVV variability database itself on (optically) well-known stars to gather high-quality infrared light-curves of several hundreds of variable stars. Results. We have now collected a significant (and still increasing) number of infrared template light-curves. This database will be used as a training-set for the machine-learning algorithms that will automatically classify the light-curves produced by VVV. The results of such an automated classification will be covered in forthcoming papers of the series.Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in A&A.     Very high energy particle acceleration powered by the jets of the microquasar SS 433

    SS 433 is a binary system containing a supergiant star that is overflowing its Roche lobe with matter accreting onto a compact object (either a black hole or neutron star). Two jets of ionized matter with a bulk velocity of 0.26c\sim0.26c extend from the binary, perpendicular to the line of sight, and terminate inside W50, a supernova remnant that is being distorted by the jets. SS 433 differs from other microquasars in that the accretion is believed to be super-Eddington, and the luminosity of the system is 1040\sim10^{40} erg s1^{-1}. The lobes of W50 in which the jets terminate, about 40 pc from the central source, are expected to accelerate charged particles, and indeed radio and X-ray emission consistent with electron synchrotron emission in a magnetic field have been observed. At higher energies (>100 GeV), the particle fluxes of γ\gamma rays from X-ray hotspots around SS 433 have been reported as flux upper limits. In this energy regime, it has been unclear whether the emission is dominated by electrons that are interacting with photons from the cosmic microwave background through inverse-Compton scattering or by protons interacting with the ambient gas. Here we report TeV γ\gamma-ray observations of the SS 433/W50 system where the lobes are spatially resolved. The TeV emission is localized to structures in the lobes, far from the center of the system where the jets are formed. We have measured photon energies of at least 25 TeV, and these are certainly not Doppler boosted, because of the viewing geometry. We conclude that the emission from radio to TeV energies is consistent with a single population of electrons with energies extending to at least hundreds of TeV in a magnetic field of 16\sim16~micro-Gauss.Comment: Preprint version of Nature paper.     Measurement of the Crab Nebula Spectrum Past 100 TeV with HAWC

    We present TeV gamma-ray observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard reference source in ground-based gamma-ray astronomy, using data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory. In this analysis we use two independent energy-estimation methods that utilize extensive air shower variables such as the core position, shower angle, and shower lateral energy distribution. In contrast, the previously published HAWC energy spectrum roughly estimated the shower energy with only the number of photomultipliers triggered. This new methodology yields a much improved energy resolution over the previous analysis and extends HAWC's ability to accurately measure gamma-ray energies well beyond 100 TeV. The energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula is well fit to a log parabola shape (dNdE=ϕ0(E/7 TeV)αβln(E/7 TeV))\left(\frac{dN}{dE} = \phi_0 \left(E/\textrm{7 TeV}\right)^{-\alpha-\beta\ln\left(E/\textrm{7 TeV}\right)}\right) with emission up to at least 100 TeV. For the first estimator, a ground parameter that utilizes fits to the lateral distribution function to measure the charge density 40 meters from the shower axis, the best-fit values are ϕo\phi_o=(2.35±\pm0.040.21+0.20^{+0.20}_{-0.21})×\times1013^{-13} (TeV cm2^2 s)1^{-1}, α\alpha=2.79±\pm0.020.03+0.01^{+0.01}_{-0.03}, and β\beta=0.10±\pm0.010.03+0.01^{+0.01}_{-0.03}. For the second estimator, a neural network which uses the charge distribution in annuli around the core and other variables, these values are ϕo\phi_o=(2.31±\pm0.020.17+0.32^{+0.32}_{-0.17})×\times1013^{-13} (TeV cm2^2 s)1^{-1}, α\alpha=2.73±\pm0.020.02+0.03^{+0.03}_{-0.02}, and β\beta=0.06±\pm0.01±\pm0.02. The first set of uncertainties are statistical; the second set are systematic. Both methods yield compatible results.     Evaluation of the Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Resources Available in Chile

    Purpose: Pediatric neuro-oncology resources are mostly unknown in Chile. We report the human and material resources available in Chilean hospitals providing pediatric neuro-oncology services. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was distributed to 17 hospitals providing pediatric neuro-oncology services (Programa Infantil Nacional de Drogas Antineoplásicas [PINDA] hospitals, 11; private, 6). Results: Response rate was 71% (PINDA, 8; private, 4). Pediatric neuro-oncology services were mainly provided within general hospitals (67%). Registries for pediatric CNS tumors and chemotherapy-related toxicities were available in 100% and 67% of hospitals, respectively. CNS tumors were treated by pediatric oncologists in 92% of hospitals; none were formally trained in neuro-oncology. The most used treatment protocols were the national PINDA protocols. All WHO essential medicines for childhood cancer were available in more than 80% of the hospitals except for gemcitabine, oxaliplatin, paclitaxel, and procarbazine. The median number of pediatric neurosurgeons per hospital was two (range, 2-6). General neuroradiologists were available in 83% of the centers. Pathology specimens were sent to neuropathologists (58%), adult pathologists (25%), and pediatric pathologists (17%). Intensity-modulated radiotherapy, conformal radiotherapy, and cobalt radiotherapy were used by 67%, 58%, and 42% of hospitals, respectively. Only one private hospital performed autologous hematopoietic cell transplant for children with CNS tumors. Conclusion: A wide range of up-to-date treatment modalities are available for children with CNS tumors. Our survey highlights future directions to improve the pediatric neuro-oncology services available in Chile such as the expansion of multidisciplinary clinics, palliative care services, long-term cancer survivorship programs, dedicated clinical research support teams, establishing standardized mechanism for sending pathologic specimen for second opinion to international specialized centers, and establishing specialized neuro-oncology training program
