    A theory for the impact of a wave breaking onto a permeable barrier with jet generation

    We model a water wave impact onto a porous breakwater. The breakwater surface is modelled as a thin barrier composed of solid matter pierced by channels through which water can flow freely. The water in the wave is modelled as a finite-length volume of inviscid, incompressible fluid in quasi-one-dimensional flow during its impact and flow through a typical hole in the barrier. The fluid volume moves at normal incidence to the barrier. After the initial impact the wave water starts to slow down as it passes through holes in the barrier. Each hole is the source of a free jet along whose length the fluid velocity and width vary in such a way as to conserve volume and momentum at zero pressure. We find there are two types of flow, depending on the porosity, ß , of the barrier. If ß : 0 = ß < 0.5774 then the barrier is a strong impediment to the flow, in that the fluid velocity tends to zero as time tends to infinity. But if ß : 0.5774 = ß = 1 then the barrier only temporarily holds up the flow, and the decelerating wave water passes through in a finite time. We report results for the velocity and impact pressure due to the incident wave water, and for the evolving shape of the jet, with examples from both types of impact. We account for the impulse on the barrier and the conserved kinetic energy of the flow. Consideration of small ß gives insight into the sudden changes in flow and the high pressures that occur when a wave impacts a nearly impermeable seawall

    Three-dimensional steep wave impact on a vertical cylinder

    In the present study we investigate the 3-D hydrodynamic slamming problem on a vertical cylinder due to the impact of a steep wave that is moving with a steady velocity. The linear theory of the velocity potential is employed by assuming inviscid, incompressible fluid and irrotational flow. As the problem is set in 3-D space, the employment of the Wagner condition is essential. The set of equations we pose, is presented as a mixed boundary value problem for Laplace's equation in 3-D. Apart from the mixed-type of boundary conditions, the problem is complicated by considering that the region of wetted surface of the cylinder is a set whose boundary depends on the vertical coordinate on the cylinder up to the free-surface. We make some simple assumptions at the start but otherwise we proceed analytically. We find closed-form relations for the hydrodynamic variables, namely the time dependent potential, the pressure impulse, the shape of the wave front (from the contact point to beyond the cylinder) and the slamming force

    From bore-soliton-splash to a new wave-to-wire wave-energy model

    We explore extreme nonlinear water-wave amplification in a contraction or, analogously, wave amplification in crossing seas. The latter case can lead to extreme or rogue-wave formation at sea. First, amplification of a solitary-water-wave compound running into a contraction is disseminated experimentally in a wave tank. Maximum amplification in our bore–soliton–splash observed is circa tenfold. Subsequently, we summarise some nonlinear and numerical modelling approaches, validated for amplifying, contracting waves. These amplification phenomena observed have led us to develop a novel wave-energy device with wave amplification in a contraction used to enhance wave-activated buoy motion and magnetically induced energy generation. An experimental proof-of-principle shows that our wave-energy device works. Most importantly, we develop a novel wave-to-wire mathematical model of the combined wave hydrodynamics, wave-activated buoy motion and electric power generation by magnetic induction, from first principles, satisfying one grand variational principle in its conservative limit. Wave and buoy dynamics are coupled via a Lagrange multiplier, which boundary value at the waterline is in a subtle way solved explicitly by imposing incompressibility in a weak sense. Dissipative features, such as electrical wire resistance and nonlinear LED loads, are added a posteriori. New is also the intricate and compatible finite-element space–time discretisation of the linearised dynamics, guaranteeing numerical stability and the correct energy transfer between the three subsystems. Preliminary simulations of our simplified and linearised wave-energy model are encouraging and involve a first study of the resonant behaviour and parameter dependence of the device

    Nonlinear wave interaction in coastal and open seas -- deterministic and stochastic theory

    We review the theory of wave interaction in finite and infinite depth. Both of these strands of water-wave research begin with the deterministic governing equations for water waves, from which simplified equations can be derived to model situations of interest, such as the mild slope and modified mild slope equations, the Zakharov equation, or the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. These deterministic equations yield accompanying stochastic equations for averaged quantities of the sea-state, like the spectrum or bispectrum. We discuss several of these in depth, touching on recent results about the stability of open ocean spectra to inhomogeneous disturbances, as well as new stochastic equations for the nearshore

    Analytical and computational modelling for wave energy systems:the example of oscillating wave surge converters

The main concerns relevant to the practical use of wave energy converters are sustainabiliy, survivability, and maintainability. And of course, it is also necessary to maximize the capture per unit area of the structure as well as to minimize the cost. In this review, we consider some of the questions related to the topics of sustainability, survivability, and maintenance access, with respect to sea conditions, for generic wave energy converters with an emphasis on the oscillating wave surge converter (OWSC). New analytical models that have been developed are a topic of particular discussion. It is also shown how existing numerical models have been pushed to their limits to provide answers to open questions relating to the operation and characteristics of wave energy converters

    Breaking phase focused wave group loads on offshore wind turbine monopiles

    The current method for calculating extreme wave loads on offshore wind turbine structures is based on engineering models for non-breaking regular waves. The present article has the aim of validating previously developed models at DTU, namely the OceanWave3D potential flow wave model and a coupled OceanWave3D-OpenFOAM solver, against measurements of focused wave group impacts on a monopile. The focused 2D and 3D wave groups are reproduced and the free surface elevation and the in-line forces are compared to the experimental results. In addition, the pressure distribution on the monopile is examined at the time of maximum force and discussed in terms of shape and magnitude. Relative pressure time series are also compared between the simulations and experiments and detailed pressure fields for a 2D and 3D impact are discussed in terms of impact type. In general a good match for free surface elevation, in-line force and wave-induced pressures is found

    A robust algorithm for computational floating body dynamics

    We present a non-iterative algorithm, FloatStepper, for coupling the motion of a rigid body and an incompressible fluid in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The purpose of the algorithm is to remove the so-called added mass instability problem, which may arise when a light, floating body interacts with a heavy fluid. The idea underlying the presented coupling method is to precede every computational time step by a series of prescribed probe body motions in which the fluid response is determined, thus revealing the decomposition of the net force and torque into two components: (i) an added mass contribution proportional to the instantaneous body acceleration and (ii) all other forces and torques. The algorithm is implemented and released as an open-source extension module to the widely used CFD toolbox, OpenFOAM, as an alternative to the existing body motion solvers. The accuracy of the algorithm is investigated with several single-phase and two-phase flow benchmark cases. The benchmarks demonstrate excellent stability properties, allowing simulations even with massless bodies. They also highlight aspects of the implementation, such as the mesh motion method, where it can be improved to further enhance the flexibility and predictive capabilities of the code
