On Tunnelling In Two-Throat Warped Reheating
We revisit the energy transfer necessary for the warped reheating scenario in
a two-throat geometry. We study KK mode wavefunctions of the full two-throat
system in the Randall--Sundrum (RS) approximation and find an interesting
subtlety in the calculation of the KK mode tunnelling rate. While wavepacket
tunnelling is suppressed unless the Standard Model throat is very long,
wavefunctions of modes localized in different throats have a non-zero overlap
and energy can be transferred between the throats by interactions between such
KK modes. The corresponding decay rates are calculated and found to be faster
than the tunnelling rates found in previously published works. However, it
turns out that the imaginary parts of the mode frequencies, induced by the
decay, slow the decay rates themselves down. The self-consistent decay rate
turns out to be given by the plane wave tunnelling rate considered previously
in the literature. We then discuss mechanisms that may enhance the energy
transfer between the throats over the RS rates. In particular, we study models
in which the warp factor changes in the UV region less abruptly than in the RS
model, and find that it is easy to build phenomenological models in which the
plane wave tunnelling rate, and hence the KK mode interaction rates, are

Fully broadband vAPP coronagraphs enabling polarimetric high contrast imaging
We present designs for fully achromatic vector Apodizing Phase Plate (vAPP)
coronagraphs, that implement low polarization leakage solutions and achromatic
beam-splitting, enabling observations in broadband filters. The vAPP is a pupil
plane optic, inducing the phase through the inherently achromatic geometric
phase. We discuss various implementations of the broadband vAPP and set
requirements on all the components of the broadband vAPP coronagraph to ensure
that the leakage terms do not limit a raw contrast of 1E-5. Furthermore, we
discuss superachromatic QWPs based of liquid crystals or quartz/MgF2
combinations, and several polarizer choices. As the implementation of the
(broadband) vAPP coronagraph is fully based on polarization techniques, it can
easily be extended to furnish polarimetry by adding another QWP before the
coronagraph optic, which further enhances the contrast between the star and a
polarized companion in reflected light. We outline several polarimetric vAPP
system designs that could be easily implemented in existing instruments, e.g.

Experimental Analysis of Proton-Induced Displacement and Ionization Damage Using Gate-Controlled Lateral PNP Bipolar Transistors
The electrical characteristics of proton-irradiated bipolar transistors are affected by ionization damage to the insulating oxide and displacement damage to the semiconductor bulk. While both types of damage degrade the transistor, it is important to understand the mechanisms individually and to be able to analyze them separately. In this paper, a method for analyzing the effects of ionization and displacement damage using gate-controlled lateral PNP bipolar junction transistors is described. This technique allows the effects of oxide charge, surface recombination velocity, and bulk traps to be measured independently
Localization of the SFT inspired Nonlocal Linear Models and Exact Solutions
A general class of gravitational models driven by a nonlocal scalar field
with a linear or quadratic potential is considered. We study the action with an
arbitrary analytic function , which has both simple and double roots.
The way of localization of nonlocal Einstein equations is generalized on models
with linear potentials. Exact solutions in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker and

Purification and Characterization of Phenylalanine Ammonia Lyase from Trichosporon cutaneum
Trichosporon cutaneum phenylalanine ammonia lyase was selected as a model to investigate the dual substrate activity of this family of enzymes. Sequencing of the PAL gene identified an extensive intron region at the N-terminus. Five amino acid residues differing from a prior report were identified. Highest Phe : Tyr activities (1.6 ± 0.3 : 0.4 ± 0.1 mol/h g wet weight) were induced by Tyr. The enzyme has a temperature optimum of 32 ∘ C and a pH optimum of 8-8.5 and shows no metal cofactor dependence. MichaelisMenten kinetics (Phe, 5.0 ± 1.1 mM) and positive allostery (Tyr, 2.4 ± 0.6 mM, Hill coefficient 1.9 ± 0.5) were observed. Anion exchange chromatography gave a purification fold of 50 with 20% yield. The His-Gln motif (substrate selectivity switch region) indicates the enzyme's ability to act on both substrates
Towards a Resolution of the Cosmological Singularity in Non-local Higher Derivative Theories of Gravity
One of the greatest problems of standard cosmology is the Big Bang
singularity. Previously it has been shown that non-local ghostfree
higher-derivative modifications of Einstein gravity in the ultra-violet regime
can admit non-singular bouncing solutions. In this paper we study in more
details the dynamical properties of the equations of motion for these theories
of gravity in presence of positive and negative cosmological constants and
radiation. We find stable inflationary attractor solutions in the presence of a
positive cosmological constant which renders inflation {\it geodesically
complete}, while in the presence of a negative cosmological constant a cyclic
universe emerges. We also provide an algorithm for tracking the super-Hubble
perturbations during the bounce and show that the bouncing solutions are free

The Shape of Gravity in a Warped Deformed Conifold
We study the spectrum of the gravitational modes in Minkowski spacetime due
to a 6-dimensional warped deformed conifold, i.e., a warped throat, in
superstring theory. After identifying the zero mode as the usual 4D graviton,
we present the KK spectrum as well as other excitation modes. Gluing the throat
to the bulk (a realistic scenario), we see that the graviton has a rather
uniform probability distribution everywhere while a KK mode is peaked in the
throat, as expected. Due to the suppressed measure of the throat in the wave
function normalization, we find that a KK mode's probability in the bulk can be
comparable to that of the graviton mode. We also present the tunneling
probabilities of a KK mode from the inflationary throat to the bulk and to
another throat. Due to resonance effect, the latter may not be suppressed as
natively expected. Implication of this property to reheating after brane
inflation is discussed
Analysis of scalar perturbations in cosmological models with a non-local scalar field
We develop the cosmological perturbations formalism in models with a single
non-local scalar field originating from the string field theory description of
the rolling tachyon dynamics. We construct the equation for the energy density
perturbations of the non-local scalar field in the presence of the arbitrary
potential and formulate the local system of equations for perturbations in the
linearized model when both simple and double roots of the characteristic
equation are present. We carry out the general analysis related to the
curvature and entropy perturbations and consider the most specific example of
