Precision packet-based frequency transfer based on oversampling
Frequency synchronization of a distributed measurement system requires the transfer of an accurate frequency reference to all nodes. The use of a general-purpose packet-based network for this aim is analyzed in this paper, where oversampling is considered as a means to counter the effects of packet delay variation on time accuracy. A comprehensive analysis that includes the stability of the local clock is presented and shows that frequency transfer through a packet network of this kind is feasible, with an accuracy level that can be of interest to a number of distributed measurement applications
Observation of Scaling Violations in Scaled Momentum Distributions at HERA
Charged particle production has been measured in deep inelastic scattering
(DIS) events over a large range of and using the ZEUS detector. The
evolution of the scaled momentum, , with in the range 10 to 1280
, has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit
frame. The results show clear evidence, in a single experiment, for scaling
violations in scaled momenta as a function of .Comment: 21 pages including 4 figures, to be published in Physics Letters B.

Observation of hard scattering in photoproduction events with a large rapidity gap at HERA
Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5
GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS
detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the
centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total
transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly
a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4
GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This
observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with
a colourless object in the proton.Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded fil
Implementation and Deployment of a Distributed Network Topology Discovery Algorithm
In the past few years, the network measurement community has been interested
in the problem of internet topology discovery using a large number (hundreds or
thousands) of measurement monitors. The standard way to obtain information
about the internet topology is to use the traceroute tool from a small number
of monitors. Recent papers have made the case that increasing the number of
monitors will give a more accurate view of the topology. However, scaling up
the number of monitors is not a trivial process. Duplication of effort close to
the monitors wastes time by reexploring well-known parts of the network, and
close to destinations might appear to be a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS)
attack as the probes converge from a set of sources towards a given
destination. In prior work, authors of this report proposed Doubletree, an
algorithm for cooperative topology discovery, that reduces the load on the
network, i.e., router IP interfaces and end-hosts, while discovering almost as
many nodes and links as standard approaches based on traceroute. This report
presents our open-source and freely downloadable implementation of Doubletree
in a tool we call traceroute@home. We describe the deployment and validation of
traceroute@home on the PlanetLab testbed and we report on the lessons learned
from this experience. We discuss how traceroute@home can be developed further
and discuss ideas for future improvements
Enhancing QoS metrics estimation in multiclass networks
This paper discusses the problematic of QoS monitoring, suggesting the use of on-line multipurpose active monitoring in multiclass networks as a powerful tool to efficiently assist and enhance the control of multiple service levels. To improve the simultaneous estimation of one-way QoS metrics, we propose a flexible probing source able to adjust probing patterns to the measurement requirements of each service class, exploring pattern coloring to better sense packet loss. The proof-of-concept provided shows that the proposed solution improves the estimation accuracy of multiple QoS metrics significantly, with a reduced probing overhead.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Backscatter from the Data Plane --- Threats to Stability and Security in Information-Centric Networking
Information-centric networking proposals attract much attention in the
ongoing search for a future communication paradigm of the Internet. Replacing
the host-to-host connectivity by a data-oriented publish/subscribe service
eases content distribution and authentication by concept, while eliminating
threats from unwanted traffic at an end host as are common in today's Internet.
However, current approaches to content routing heavily rely on data-driven
protocol events and thereby introduce a strong coupling of the control to the
data plane in the underlying routing infrastructure. In this paper, threats to
the stability and security of the content distribution system are analyzed in
theory and practical experiments. We derive relations between state resources
and the performance of routers and demonstrate how this coupling can be misused
in practice. We discuss new attack vectors present in its current state of
development, as well as possibilities and limitations to mitigate them.Comment: 15 page
Measurement of Jet Shapes in Photoproduction at HERA
The shape of jets produced in quasi-real photon-proton collisions at
centre-of-mass energies in the range GeV has been measured using the
hadronic energy flow. The measurement was done with the ZEUS detector at HERA.
Jets are identified using a cone algorithm in the plane with a
cone radius of one unit. Measured jet shapes both in inclusive jet and dijet
production with transverse energies GeV are presented. The jet
shape broadens as the jet pseudorapidity () increases and narrows
as increases. In dijet photoproduction, the jet shapes have been
measured separately for samples dominated by resolved and by direct processes.
Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo calculations of resolved and direct
processes describe well the measured jet shapes except for the inclusive
production of jets with high and low . The observed
broadening of the jet shape as increases is consistent with the
predicted increase in the fraction of final state gluon jets.Comment: 29 pages including 9 figure
Fully-distributed joint clock synchronization and ranging in wireless sensor networks under exponential delays
In this paper, we study the global clock synchro- nization and ranging problem for wireless sensor networks in the presence of unknown exponential delays using the two- way message exchange mechanism. Based on the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM), we propose a fully- distributed synchronization and ranging algorithm which has low communication overhead and computation cost. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better accuracy than consensus algorithm, and can always converge to the centralized optimal solution.published_or_final_versio
