Argentina and the IMF: Learning Lessons from Our Experience
The Fund has already produced an evaluation of the lessons that could be drawn from the crisis in Argentina. That assessment mainly dealt with Argentina's authorities' errors that lead to the crisis and, to some extent, also with the role that the Fund played in supporting those policy failures. This paper analyses Argentina's experience in dealing with the Fund during the aftermath of the crisis3 and draws some lessons on what changes could be introduced into two of the most critical policies of the Fund, i.e. conditionality (on both, structural and macroeconomic objectives) and its role in dealing with full-blown debt crisis. The first section of this paper analyzes whether the structural reforms included in the two arrangements signed with the country after 2002 were strictly critical to the achievement of Argentina's macroeconomic objectives and foremost, regarding its debt sustainability. We conclude that some of the structural conditionality was unnecessary and that when the required reforms are beyond the reach of the government's executive branch, performance criteria could actually backfire
Protein Expression of Steroid Receptors in Macaca mulatta endometriotic Lesions
Endometriosis is pathologically defined as the presence of endometrial tissue in ectopic locations. Currently, there are no specific, non-invasive biomarkers and no cure for endometriosis. Non-human primates (NHP), including Macaca mulatta (rhesus macaques), have been highlighted as appropriate models to study endometriosis due to genetic, physiological, and anatomical similarities to humans. Research shows endometriosis might be associated with molecular deviations in human peritoneal endometriosis, such as increased levels of estrogen receptors and decreased levels of progesterone receptors.
The aim of this study is to determine protein expression of steroid receptors in five endometriotic lesions of rhesus macaques. We propose that lesions of rhesus macaques will express elevated estrogen receptors and diminished progesterone receptors, similar to human endometriotic lesions. Endometriotic lesions of rhesus macaques were obtained at time of surgery from different locations, and steroid receptor expression was determined by immunohistochemistry. This study was able to determine the expression of steroid receptors in endometriotic lesions of rhesus macaques; however the results were not able to support our hypothesis. Results did not observe significant differences between estrogen and progesterone receptor protein expressions in glandular and stromal compartments of the endometriotic lesions. Still, this animal model represents a valuable tool to study endometriosis since they do develop spontaneous endometriosis. Future studies should match the location of lesions and classify the severity of endometriosis in the rhesus macaques
Health risk due to pesticide exposure in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) crop in Oaxaca, Mexico
Pesticides increase agricultural productivity worldwide. Unfortunately, these pesticides put public health and the environment at risk. This study aimed to document the presence of pests and diseases in tomato crops, the range of pesticides used, and acute pesticide poisoning symptoms (APP) among producers from various municipalities in the State of Oaxaca, Mexico. Surveys were applied from 2019 to 2021. The information was examined through a descriptive analysis. The Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman’s Rho correlation established differences between groups and associations. The main pests were the white fly, various worms, blight, mildew, and weeds. Fifty-five active ingredients (AI) were identified, predominantly Toxicological Category (TC) IV, such as insecticides and fungicides, as well as TC III herbicides. Factors associated with a greater diversity of AI were <10 years in agricultural activity, high presence of pests and diseases, and surfaces >1 ha. Up to six APP symptoms occurred in 60.6% of the producers, and 58.2% of the AI identified are considered hazardous pesticides.
Highlights:
Fifty-five active ingredients were identified in tomato crops, predominantly insecticides and fungicides.
More than fifty percent of the active ingredients identified are considered hazardous pesticides.
