An Econometric Analysis of the Effectiveness of Compensation to Retention

In July 2001, Lieutenant General Donald L. Peterson, Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel, United States Air Force, testified before Congress that adverse retention rates were senior leadership’s number one concern. Military compensation sustains defense manpower policies that in turn support the nation\u27s defense strategy. Defense spending must be allocated efficiently to maintain the optimal mix of forces and weapon systems to respond to national security objectives. The President requested $149.9 billion for military pay and healthcare for Fiscal Year 2009, or 29 percent of the total proposed defense budget. When military compensation constitutes nearly one-third of department expenses, its impact on retention of personnel must meet targets. This thesis estimates the value of military compensation’s effect on the probability of retaining Air Force personnel in a cross-sectional analysis. The findings suggest that compensation packages are effective at retaining military members at critical points in their career to develop senior officer and enlisted leaders. Prior research estimated at the aggregate level, but we modeled our data for individual observations to estimate how members prefer to delay civilian earnings until after retirement eligibility. We found that our findings, while interesting, would improve if estimated through a binary probit model in time-series analysis

Health Professional Students As Providers Of Behavioral Health Services To Uninsured Immigrants

Using the principles of lay counseling, health professional students were trained to deliver psychosocial educational interventions and administer substance use screenings to uninsured monolingual Spanish-speaking Latino immigrants with symptomatic depression and/or substance use disorders. Changes in depressive symptoms were assessed with the PHQ-9. Twenty-five patients enrolled in the lay counselor program for depression. PHQ-9 data were available from the 15 individuals who completed the program, among whom the mean baseline score was 11.7 (SD = 6.2) and mean final score was 4.6 (SD = 4.2) (

Folk medicine, phytochemistry and pharmacological application of Piper marginatum

AbstractPiper marginatum Jacq., Piperaceae, is a widely distributed Neotropical species abundant in the Caribbean, exhibiting a characteristic winged petiole and a heart-shaped leaf, its two vegetative landmarks for rapid identification. The species has been employed by traditional indigenous cultures for its reputed medicinal properties. The plant is most frequently employed by local healers in Central America, the Antilles and South America, for alleviating gastrointestinal ailments, administered as a decoction or infusion for its tonic, diuretic and carminative effects. These beneficial properties may be attributed to the presence of various phytochemicals within P. marginatum, with most of the studies focusing on the essential oil of the plant. Monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids and phenylpropanoids of a varied chemical structure have been identified in the essential oil, while phenylalkanoids, aristolactams, amides and flavonoids have been purified by chromatographic techniques from the extracts. The biological and pharmacological examination of P. marginatum showed that the plant may be a valuable source of mosquitocidal, antifungal, antitumoral and hemostatic agents. Future bioguided research may yield biologically relevant molecules useful in medicine or agriculture

Towards a Lie theory for vertex and conformal algebras

We introduce several definitions within the framework ofvertex and conformal algebras which are analogous to some importantconcepts of the classical Lie theory. Most importantly, we define vertexmanifolds, which correspond to the notion of Lie groups. We provesuitable vertex/conformal versions of a number of classical results suchas the Milnor-Moore theorem, Cartier duality, and Lie's third theoremfor nilpotent Lie algebras.Fil: Boyallian, Carina.
