    Welfare-Enhancing Collusion in the Presence of a Competitive Fringe

    Following the structure of many commodity markets, we consider a few large firms and a competitive fringe of many small suppliers choosing quantities in an infinite-horizon setting subject to demand shocks. We show that a collusive agreement among the large firms may not only bring an output contraction but also an output expansion (relative to the noncollusive output level). The latter occurs during booms, when the fringe’s market share is more important, and is due to the strategic substitutability of quantities (we will never observe an output-expanding collusion in a price-setting game). In addition and depending on the fringe’s market share the time at which maximal collusion is most difficult to sustain can be either at booms or recessions.

More concretely, we have focused in two different types of lectins, Galectins and DC-SIGN, and in Toll-like receptor 4. We have made use of computational techniques, including docking and virtual screening, molecular dynamics simulations, conformational analysis and quantum mechanics calculations. The work has been organized into several chapters that are summarized as follows: Chapter 1 corresponds to the current knowledge and perspectives about receptors related to immunity, in particular: galectins, DC-SIGN, and Toll-like receptor 4, corresponding to the molecular recognition events and modulation by small molecules. Chapter 2 describes the state-of-the-art methods in molecular modeling and computational chemistry applied to the study of molecular recognition processes and drug design...En esta tesis hemos estudiado los procesos reconocimiento molecular de receptores involucrados en la inmunidad innata. Más concretamente, nos hemos centrado en dos tipos diferentes de lectinas, Galectinas y DC-SIGN, y en el receptor Toll-like 4 (TLR4). Hemos utilizado técnicas computacionales, incluyendo docking y cribado virtual, simulaciones de dinámica molecular, análisis conformacional y cálculos de mecánica cuántica.     Measuring the translational and rotational velocity of particles in helical motion using structured light

    We measure the rotational and translational velocity components of particles moving in helical motion using the frequency shift they induced to the structured light beam illuminating them. Under Laguerre-Gaussian mode illumination, a particle with a helical motion reflects light that acquires an additional frequency shift proportional to the angular velocity of rotation in the transverse plane, on top of the usual frequency shift due to the longitudinal motion. We determined both the translational and rotational velocities of the particles by switching between two modes: by illuminating with a Gaussian beam, we can isolate the longitudinal frequency shift; and by using a Laguerre-Gaussian mode, the frequency shift due to the rotation can be determined. Our technique can be used to characterize the motility of microorganisms with a full three-dimensional movement.Comment: 5 pages,5 figure

    Direction-sensitive transverse velocity measurement by phase-modulated structured light beams

    The use of structured light beams to detect the velocity of targets moving perpendicularly to the beam's propagation axis opens new avenues for remote sensing of moving objects. However, determining the direction of motion is still a challenge since detection is usually done by means of an interferometric setup which only provides an absolute value of the frequency shift. Here, we put forward a novel method that addresses this issue. It uses dynamic control of the phase in the transverse plane of the structured light beam so that the direction of the particles' movement can be deduced. This is done by noting the change in the magnitude of the frequency shift as the transverse phase of the structured light is moved appropriately. We demonstrate our method with rotating micro-particles that are illuminated by a Laguerre-Gaussian beam with a rotating phase about its propagation axis. Our method, which only requires a dynamically configurable optical beam generator, can easily be used with other types of motion by appropriate engineering and dynamic modulation of the phase of the light beam.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Forest Hydrology, Soil Conservation and Green Barriers in Canary Islands

    In volcanic islands, the rainfall regime and its torrential nature, together with the steep slopes and the soil types present are considered to be some of the main factors affecting forest hydrology and soil conservation. In such environments, rain regime is generally irregular and characterized by short and intense rainfalls, which could cause destructive flows at times, followed by long periods of rain absence. The volcanic nature of these islands have as a direct resultant steep slopes which influences the runoff volume and speed, as well as the amount of topsoil susceptible to be detached and transported downstream. The soil type also affects the susceptibility to erosion processes. Andisols are the most typical soil on volcanic islands. Their particularities derive their mineral constituents, called short-range-order products, which provide these soils with an increased structural stability, which in turn reduces their susceptibility to erosion. However, the land use changes and the environmental factors such as rain regime and steep slopes may be determinant factor in destabilizing these soils and ultimately a cause for soil erosion and runoffs, which become a threat to the population downstream. Green barriers have been traditionally used to prevent or reduce these processes, also to enhance the dew effect and the fog water collection, and as a firebreak which acts as a barrier to slow or stop the progress of a wildfire. Wooded species present and subsequently their performance have a major influence on their effectiveness. The use of this natural erosion and fire control methods on volcanic islands is discussed in this paper
