Bousfield localisations along Quillen bifunctors and applications

We describe left and right Bousfield localisations along Quillen adjunctions of two variables. These localised model structures can be used to define Postnikov sections and homological localisations of arbitrary model categories, and to study the homotopy limit model structure on the category of sections of a left Quillen presheaf of localised model structures. We obtain explicit results in this direction in concrete examples of towers and fiber products of model categories. In particular, we prove that the category of simplicial sets is Quillen equivalent to the homotopy limit model structure of its Postnikov tower, and that the category of symmetric spectra is Quillen equivalent to the homotopy fiber product of its Bousfield arithmetic square. For spectral model categories, we show that the homotopy fiber of a stable left Bousfield localisation is a stable right Bousfield localisation

CLASSISM, DISCRIMINATION AND MERITOCRASCY IN THE LABOR MARKET: THE CASE OF CHILE

This paper examines the returns to the socioeconomic background of origin (or “classâ€) in the labor market in Chile. We employ individual data from several cohorts of graduates from the same program (Business and Economics) of a large and diverse public University in Chile. The data includes productivity measures uncommon in earnings differential studies, such as academic performance at University, school academic quality, and second language proficiency. Four measures of socioeconomic background are employed, which are significantly correlated. These are highly significant in explaining earnings despite their collinearity, and after controlling for various measures of productivity. The class wage gaps obtained by a Oxaca-Ramson decomposition amount to approximately 25 to 35 percent, which are remarkably higher than wage gaps reported in the literature for other workers’ characteristics such as gender, race and physical appearance. Moreover, the effect of class is more important in determining earnings than academic performance at University. Future research must focus on explaining the causes of this large return to class. These may emerge from some combination of pure employer discrimination, productivity-enhancing discrimination from other parties (such as consumers, peers and suppliers), statistical discrimination by employers and “pure†class-related productivityDiscrimination, Earnings gaps

Measuring Regional Cohesion Effects of Large-scale Transport Infrastructure Investments: An Accessibility Approach.

Cohesion is considered one of the main policy goals both at a EU an national level. However, there is currently a lack of a common approach to measure cohesion effects of large-scale transport infrastructure investments. Accessibility indicators have an unexploited potential in transportation assessment methodologies. Accessibility is considered an added value of locations, which represents one of the elements contributing to a region’s welfare. Therefore, spatial distribution of accessibility may be used as a proxy to assess regional cohesion. This paper suggests an approach consisting in measuring changes in the spatial distribution of four different accessibility indicators, computed and mapped using a GIS support. Cohesion is subsequently measured calculating a set of inequality indices of the resulting accessibility distribution. It is possible then to assess whether disparities in regional accessibility are increased or reduced after the implementation of a new transport infrastructure. This approach is tested assessing regional cohesion effects of road and rail network developments in Spain in the period 1992-2004. Comparing the results obtained with accessibility indicators and inequality indices allows identifying the main critical factors and sources of bias. The conclusion is that for the rode mode, cohesion has improved, while regional disparities have increased for the rail mode

The Pathway to a Senior Housing Officer, A Latino Man’s Journey

This study presents my experience as a Latino male entering the field of residential life and working my way to a senior level housing officer position. My personal account is situated in the context of the greater societal issues of how identity and mentorship are significant in a successful path into residential life. The significance of this study results from the low number of Latinos obtaining and moving up the ranks in residential life. The number of Latinos in the United States is increasing and the number of Latino students entering higher education is growing. Staffs working in student affairs need to be able to support and mentor these students. Due to the importance of the personal narrative, a qualitative design through an auto-ethnographic method was used. Interviews were conducted with three Latino men in various stages of their educational and professional careers which include a self –interview facilitated by a colleague. The findings showed: (a) how Latino men need to have mentors in residential life; and (b) how racial and ethnic identities impact a person’s experiences and concept of self. A counter-story also emerged as a result of how the participant’s self identifies racially are based on Latino Identity Development. This study provides recommendations for student affairs professionals: (a) outreach, hiring, and mentoring of Latino men; (b) examinations of who is being mentored into the field of residential life. The limitations of this study were the small sample size of participants interviewed; the focus on racial identity; and the study was limited to a small private mid-west school. Future studies could focus on the impact of other social identities and their intersections among Latino men in the field of residential life as well as analyzing a variety of different institutions

This article reports the results of a study conducted at the University of León, Spain, and funded by the Spanish Ministry for the Presidency. The aim of the research was to analyze how history textbooks in Spain present the subject of the post civil war era, particularly as regards those aspects related to repression under the Franco regime and anti-Francoist resistance. A review of the textbooks was conducted, focusing especially on those used in the 2nd year of secondary school education, since in accordance with the curriculum this is when Spanish Contemporary History is studied in most detail. Critical Discourse Analysis was the methodology employed to investigate the extent, completeness, orientation and perspective of the content presented. In addition, 610 history teachers were interviewed in order to obtain their opinions regarding the adequacy of the contents presented. The most significant findings indicate that although content related to these topics has begun to be included, the subject is not covered in sufficient depth.
