Evaluation of the ATB 32C, automicrobic system and API 20C using clinical yeast isolates

The ATB 32C (bioMerieux, Spain), AMS-YBC (Vitek System, bioMerieux, Spain) and API 20C (bioMerieux, Spain) systems were evaluated for their reliability in identifying 100 clinical yeast isolates. The ATB 32C, AMS-YBC and API 20C systems correctly identified 97%, 98% and 100% of the isolates respectively. There were no significant differences in incubation periods between ATB 32C and AMS-YBC systems. One isolate of Candida tropicalis was wrongly identified by the ATB 32C and the AMS-YBC systems. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolate was wrongly identified by the ATB 32C system while the AMS-YBC failed to identify it and a third isolate of Candida krusei was wrongly identified by the ATB 32C system. The overall accuracy and rapidity of the ATB 32C and AMS-YBC systems were sufficient to permit recommendation of either of these systems for routine use in the clinical microbiology laboratory, although the first system enjoys the advantages of having a wider data-base and the possibility of manual reading

Differences in macroelements, trace elements and toxic metals between wild and captive-reared greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) from the Mediterranean Sea

Despite its legislative regulation and control, the quality and safety of aquatic products is somewhat questioned due to the potential bioaccumulation of pollutants. The elements (Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr, V and Zn) were determined in the liver and muscle of wild and captive-reared Seriola dumerili with the aim of studying possible differences between origins, and sex-related variations. Additionally, the dietary intake of these elements derived from its consumption was also evaluated. Most of the elements and metals analyzed were accumulated to a higher extent in the liver of wild specimens whereas lower differences were observed in the muscle. Overall, the elements and metal composition of wild females strongly differed from that of captive-reared specimens probably related to the mobilization of nutrients for the spawning season in wild mature females, which were greater than their captive-reared counterparts

Investigación médico-antropológica documental: prescripciones enfocadas al manejo del dolor

Introducción: Las recetas médicas o prescripciones históricas en el territorio de la Nueva Granada (hoy Colombia) revelan la evolución del manejo de la enfermedad en función de los efectos benéficos de administrar algún tipo de agente medicinal de origen vegetal, animal o mineral. Objetivo: Describir el tratamiento del reumatismo en los siglos XVIII y XIX, con base en dos recetas médicas de la época con base en la fundamentación contemporánea de su interacción fisiológica. Materiales y métodos: Búsqueda documental en el archivo Histórico de la Biblioteca Octavio Arizmendi Posada de la Universidad de La Sabana, donde se encontraron las recetas tituladas “Reumatismo” y “Rehumas”. Resultados: Se describen cuatro clases de tratamientos para las enfermedades reumáticas utilizados en los siglos XVIII y XIX y orientados principal-mente a la disminución del dolor. Este artículo presenta las bases fisiológicas de estos tratamientos, y cómo pudieron o no haber tenido algún efecto calmante al examinar su fisiología. Conclusiones: Estos medicamentos coloniales neogranadinos no ameritan su uso en el contexto actual de la medicina, pero pudieron representar una ayuda terapéutica en su momento

Charged particle-like branes in ABJM

We study the effect of adding lower dimensional brane charges to the 't Hooft monopole, di-baryon and baryon vertex configurations in $AdS_4 \times \mathbb{P}^3$. We show that these configurations capture the background fluxes in a way that depends on the induced charges, and therefore, require additional fundamental strings in order to cancel the worldvolume tadpoles. The study of the dynamics reveals that the charges must lie inside some interval in order to find well defined configurations, a situation familiar from the baryon vertex in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ with charges. For the baryon vertex and the di-baryon the number of fundamental strings must also lie inside an allowed interval. Our configurations are sensitive to the flat $B$-field recently suggested in the literature. We make some comments on its possible role. Los Poyos del Molinillo (Frigiliana): new site of the Bronze Age in the East Axarquía (Málaga, Andalucía)

En este trabajo damos a conocer un nuevo yacimiento descubierto recientemente en el municipio de Frigiliana. La delimitación del área denominada Los Poyos del Molinillo permitió definir la existencia de un poblado y una covacha con restos de una inhumación. El estudio de los materiales arqueológicos, que incluye cerámica, piezas metálicas o elementos de molturación, o la datación AMS obtenida, permiten adscribir el yacimiento a la Edad del Bronce y ampliar el conocimiento de esta etapa en la Axarquía oriental (Málaga, Andalucía).In this work we present a new site recently discovered in the Frigiliana municipality (Málaga). The spatial delimitation of the so called Los Poyos del Molinillo area let us define a Bronze age settlement and an inhumation burial cave. The archaeological record includes ceramic, metallic items or grinding elements, all of them belonging to the Bronze Age, as well as an AMS Radiocarbon data. This site extends the knowledge about this period in the Eastern Axarquía (Málaga, Andalucía)

El presente trabajo trata de poner de relieve algunas enseñanzas que podemos entresacar de las últimas crisis financieras, a fin de hacer algunas propuestas en lo que a la actuación de los agentes se refiere, tomando como ejemplo las explicaciones que se dan sobre la quiebra de una institución tan importante como el Long Term Credit Management. Como quiera que la consecución de un posible orden financiero tomará su tiempo, traemos a colación nuevos métodos, que ya se están empleando puntualmente, sobre todo por los agentes profesionales, que pueden ayudarnos a una mayor aproximación a la realidad. Nos referimos a la aplicación de la Inteligencia Artificial a la economía y, en concreto, a tres de sus ramas: la lógica borrosa, las redes neuronales y los algoritmos genéticos

The measures of intervention adopted for the study and control of the outbreak are exposed. 126 systems with risk were found (45 of them high risk): 70 water cooling towers or similar, 35 decorative fountains, 1 building site with earth movement and 20 air-water closed systems, distributed by risk criteria.Immediately were stopped: decorative fountains, washing down of streets, spray irrigation in parks and the building site.486 inspections and 1040 sample taking were executed, the cleaning and disinfection of water cooling towers and similar systems were ordered and closing if necessary.Afterwards, fills were replaced in water cooling tower which tested Lp positive.After the investigation of 339 systems, 57 (16.9%) tested Lp positive culture, 23 (6.8 %) water cooling towers and 31 (9.1 %) drinking water taps.Distribution by serotypes: LpS1 (62’3%), serotypes 2-14 (36’68%).LpS1Olda Olda (21’74%) was the most abundant followed by LpS1 Pontiac Philadelphia Lugano (18’84%), in contrast to LpS1 Pontiac Philadelphia Glasgow (1’45%), found only in one case although isolated in the 18 samples of patients.Culture and PCR were available in 355 cases, resulting in 30,8% sensitivity (confidence interval 95%, 25,1) and specificity 99,4±0,8.There are a big percentage of samples positives to Lp Sg1 and between them prevail Lp Pontiac Philadelphia, basically Lugano kind.The first disinfection doesn ́t eradicate all the contamination. The finding of 14 Lp positive systems after cleaning and disinfection process, with previous negative cultures, suggests a high analytical results variability and/or an inefficient first cleaning and disinfections of the system.The previous conclusions and the low sensitivity of the PCR test must be considered in future cases.Se exponen las medidas de intervención adoptadas para el estudio y control del brote. Se encontraron 126 instalaciones con riesgo (45 de ellas de alto): 70 torres de refrigeración y similares, 35 fuentes ornamentales, 1 obra con movimiento de tierra y 20 sistemas con circuito cerrado aire-agua, que se distribuyeron por categorías de riesgo.De forma inmediata se clausuraron: las fuentes ornamentales, el baldeo de calles y riegos por aspersión de parques y la obra.Se realizaron un total de 486 inspecciones y 1040 toma de muestras, ordenando la limpieza y desinfección de torres de refrigeración y similares y su clausura en caso necesario. Posteriormente, se cambio de relleno en torres de refrigeración positivas a Lp.Del total de instalaciones investigadas (339), en 57 (16’9%) se encontró un cultivo positivo a Lp. Distribución por tipo de instalación con cultivo positivo a Lp: en torres de refrigeración 23 (6’8%), en fuentes ornamentales 3 (7,32%) y en agua sanitaria 31 (9’1%).Distribución por serogrupos: LpS1 (62’3%), serogrupos 2-14 (36’68%).LpS1Olda Olda (21’74%) fue la mas abundante seguida de LpS1 Pontiac Filadelfia Lugano (18’84%) frente a LpS1 Pontiac Filadelfia Glasgow (en 1 ocasión, 1’45%), esta ultima fue la aislada en las 18 muestras de enfermos.En 355 ocasiones se dispone de cultivo y PCR, encontrándose una sensibilidad de 30,8% (Intervalo de confianza al 95%, de 25,1) y una especificidad del 99,4±0,8. Hay que considerar la eventual influencia en los resultados aportada por la posible aparición de dos falsos negativos en el cultivo.Se encuentra un elevado porcentaje de muestras correspondientes a Legionella pneumophilla serogrupo 1, dentro de estas prevalecen las tipo Pontiac Philadelphia, y dentro de estas las tipo Lugano.La primera desinfección no erradicó la contaminación en su totalidad. Abundando en lo anterior, el hallazgo de un número considerable de torres de refrigeración positivas a Lp tras limpieza y desinfección, con cultivos previos negativos redunda en la variabilidad de los resultados analíticos y/o en la ineficacia de las primeras limpiezas y desinfecciones realizadas por empresas.Lo expuesto anteriormente unido a la baja sensibilidad de la PCR deben de ser tenidos en cuenta en futuros incidentes
