PERUBAHAN POLA PEMANFAATAN HARTA WARISAN" TUNGGU TUBANG"

Fame, Obscurity and Power Laws in Music History
This paper investigates the processes leading to musical fame or obscurity, whether for composers, performers, or works themselves. It starts from the observation that the patterns of success, across many historical music datasets, follow a similar mathematical relationship known as a power law, often with an exponent approximately equal to two. It presents several simple models which can produce power law distributions. An examination of these models' transience characteristics suggests parallels with some historical music examples, giving clues to the ways that success and obscurity might emerge in practice and the extent to which success might be influenced by inherent musical quality. These models can be seen as manifestations of a more fundamental process resulting from the law of maximum entropy, subject to a constraint on the average value of the logarithm of the success measure. This implies that musical success is a multiplicative quality, and suggests that musical markets operate to strike a balance between familiarity (socio-cultural importance) and novelty (individual importance). The common power law exponent of two is seen to emerge as a consequence of the tendency for musical activity to be spread evenly across the log-success bands

The Bad Nauheim Hotels in The Good Soldier: A Re-evaluation
Ford Madox Ford’s novel The Good Soldier is partly set in and around the German spa town of Bad Nauheim between the years 1904 and 1913. Three hotels in Bad Nauheim are mentioned in the novel: the Englischer Hof, the Hotel Regina, and the Hotel Excelsior. In the Norton Critical Edition of the novel, they are described as follows:
Englischer Hof: ‘Probably Hotel d’Angleterre, now the Deutscher Hof, a substantial private hotel on a tree-lined street, at 1 Küchlerstrasse, one block from the Kurpark and baths’.
Hotel Regina: ‘A few yards from the Englischer Hof and on the same street at 8 Küchlerstrasse.’
Hotel Excelsior: ‘Grander than the Englischer Hof and Hotel Regina, the Excelsior was within easy walking distance of them but still modest in comparison with Grand-Hotel Kaiserhof or Grand-Hotel Metropole and Monopole. Ford places characters in establishments exactly reflecting their social status rather than their wealth’.
Following a recent visit to Bad Nauheim, I concluded that these locations and descriptions do not appear to be consistent with the historical evidence, or with certain passages in the novel. This essay discusses these inconsistencies and proposes an alternative hypothesis for the locations

Statistics in Historical Musicology
Statistical techniques are well established in many historical disciplines and are used extensively in music analysis, music perception, and performance studies. However, statisticians have largely ignored the many music catalogues, databases, dictionaries, encyclopedias, lists and other datasets compiled by institutions and individuals over the last few centuries. Such datasets present fascinating historical snapshots of the musical world, and statistical analysis of them can reveal much about the changing characteristics of the population of musical works and their composers, and about the datasets and their compilers. In this thesis, statistical methodologies have been applied to several case studies covering, among other things, music publishing and recording, composers’ migration patterns, nineteenth-century biographical dictionaries, and trends in key and time signatures. These case studies illustrate the insights to be gained from quantitative techniques; the statistical characteristics of the populations of works and composers; the limitations of the predominantly qualitative approach to historical musicology; and some practical and theoretical issues associated with applying statistical techniques to musical datasets. Quantitative methods have much to offer historical musicology, revealing new insights, quantifying and contextualising existing information, providing a measure of the quality of historical sources, revealing the biases inherent in music historiography, and giving a collective voice to the many minor and obscure works and composers that have historically formed the vast majority of musical activity but who have been largely absent from the received history of music

'Words by F M Hueffer': A Survey of Song Settings of Ford's Poems
Music was important in Ford Madox Ford’s life. It is often mentioned in Ford’s fiction and memoirs, and several of his poems were clearly intended as songs. Indeed, Ford composed music for some of his own and others’ poems, as described by Stang & Smith. Ezra Pound claimed that “we would not be far wrong in calling Mr Hueffer the best lyricist in England”. This essay surveys other composers’ musical settings of Ford’s poems. A search of library catalogues, musical literature and other sources reveals fourteen published songs, only two of which are mentioned in Ford's biographies

Quantitative Perspectives
‘A Big Data History of Music’ has been a collaboration between the British Library and Royal Holloway, University of London, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, with the objective of cleaning and enriching seven major music datasets, making the data available to researchers, and investigating the tools and techniques for analysing these sources. The conclusion of the project was marked by a Study Day at the British Library on 11 March 2015, to report on achievements and to showcase how quantitative analysis can complement more traditional approaches to historical musicology
