The Earth's magnetosphere as a sample of the plasma universe

    Get PDF
Plasma processes in the Earth's neighborhood determine the environmental conditions under which space-based equipment for science or technology must operate. These processes are peculiar to a state of matter that is rare on Earth but dominates the universe as whole. The physical, and especially the electrodynamic, properties of this state of matter is still far from well understood. By fortunate circumstances, the magnetosphere-ionosphere system of the Earth provides a rich sample of widely different plasma populations, and, even more importantly, it is the site of a remarkable variety of plasma processes. In different combinations such processes must be important throughout the universe, which is overwhelmingly dominated by matter in the plasma state. Therefore, observations and experiments in the near-Earth plasma serve a multitude of purposes. They will not only (1) clarify the dynamics of the space environment but also (2) widen the understanding of matter, (3) form a basis for interpretating remote observations of astrophysical objects, thereby even (4) help to reconstruct events that led to the evolution of the solar system. Last but not least they will (5) provide know-how required for adapting space-based technology to the plasma environment. Such observations and experiments will require a close mutual interplay between science and technology

How to work for Sustainable Development: the Importance of Implementation at all Levels

    Get PDF
The world is increasingly inter-connected and inter-dependent as a result of the flow of goods, migration, capital movements, direct investment and the transfer of technology. To match this, politics also need to be global. The purpose of this study is to propose a policy model that will demonstrate how a country or a region can work for sustainable development and harmonize a concept of governance that will embrace UN, national and local obligations and prerequisites. The idea is that the sustainable development goals (SDGs) agreed upon in the UN are accepted and implemented at the national and local levels. One post-2015 sustainable development goal is to “strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development” with targets like “enhance policy coherence for sustainable development” and “enhance the global partnership for sustainable development complemented by multi-stakeholder partnerships that mobilize and share knowledge, expertise, technologies and financial resources to support the achievement of sustainable development goals in all countries, particularly developing countries”. Government policies play a crucial role in determining how a country or a region will develop. To understand the mechanisms of investments in different sectors as well as how to establish a policy, select and involve those actors that will define and help achieve the goals, will make a change

Contemporary CaitlĂn: Gender and Society in Celtic Tiger Popular Fiction

This article explores the ways in which the traditional trope of Cathleen Ni Houlihan continues to haunt some contemporary Irish women’s novels. Focusing on recent “chick lit”, the fraught relations between gender and nationalism are analysed with a view to questioning the very possibility of embracing “post-feminism’’ in a context in which some women’s literature, far from challenging the patriarchal and capitalist status quo, actually perpetuates it.Cet article se propose d’étudier la manière dont le trope traditionnel de Cathleen Ni Houlihan continue de hanter les romans contemporains de certaines auteures irlandaises. A partir d’une analyse de la littérature populaire pour femmes (« chick lit »), les relations tendues entre genre et nationalisme seront examinées afin d’interroger la recevabilité même du terme « post-féminisme » dans un contexte où la littérature de certains auteures, très loin de remettre en cause le statu quo patriarcal et capitaliste, continue de le renforcer

Participants were students in Sweden, Norway and Germany. A self-report inventory was used to measure willingness to pay and the importance attached to values of Schwartz’s circular model. In Sweden and Norway, participants were willing to pay, on average, 18% extra for a mobile phone with labels for environmental or social sustainability. In Germany, the corresponding share was 12%. To strive for self-enhancement values, that is, social status and prestige, as well as control and dominance over people and resources, was associated with a lower willingness to pay for mobile phones with labels for environmental or social sustainability in all three countries. Furthermore, women were willing to pay more than men for mobile phones with both kinds of sustainability labels. In Sweden and Norway, participants were, on average, willing to pay more for a mobile phone with a label for social sustainability compared to a mobile phone with a label for environmental sustainability.publishedVersio

An Examination of Swedish Human Resource Management Students’ Beliefs about What Work Should Ideally Be Like

    Get PDF
Human Resource Management students’ beliefs about how work should be organised will influence their behaviour in future professional positions. This prompted a study in which students in a three-year programme in Human Resource Management at University West in Sweden commented on a number of statements about what work should ideally be like. All 140 respondents were born between 1978 and 1990 and hence belong to Generation Y, also known as Generation Me. The respondents generally agreed strongly with humanistic beliefs about work and female students agreed with humanistic beliefs to a far greater extent than male students.

Can planning reduce the risks we face? A study of managing risks associated with major hazard sites

    Get PDF
This study assesses how effective the planning system is in managing the risks associated with major hazard sites. Through a number of research strands, it explores how the planning system evaluates risk factors through policies, processes and decision-making, and the system's relationship with external expert bodies and parallel regulatory regimes. In particular, the study draws upon analysis of planning appeal decisions, a review of Development Plan policies, and a survey of stakeholders. With regard to a series of research questions, the study discusses the factors that lead to an under- representation of risk factors within the current planning system. Finally, the study identifies the potential of a spatial planning approach to facilitate more collaborative working practices, and improve the planning system's ability to make judgements about the risks associated with major hazard sites, and attempts to mitigate the risks in and around such sites

Vervanging van de cervicale oesophagus door een gerevasculariseerd ileumsegment : een experimenteel onderzoek bij honden

Radical surgical treatment of carcinoma of the cervical oesophagus has always been limited by Jack of possibilities for reconstructive surgery. Different techniques have been used to bridgedefectsin this area. Recently revascularised small bowel transplants have been succesfully employed in a few cases. The purpose of the experimental study, reported in this thesis, was to develop a technique for replacing the cervical oesophagus in the dog with a revascularised ileal autotransplant and to evaluate the transplant by cinematography, oesophagoscopy, angiography and histology over a period of one year

Construct failure after open reduction and plate fixation of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures

    Get PDF
Introduction: Worldwide, implants mostly used for fixation of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures (DMCF) are the easily to bend reconstruction plate and the stiffer small fragment locking compression plate. Construct failure rates after plate fixation of DMCF are reported around 5 percent. Possible risk factors for construct failure are implant type and fracture type. However, little is known about the influence of fracture fixation method on construct failure. The aim of this study was to assess construct failure in plate fixation of DMCF and to identify possible risk factors. Methods: All consecutive patients treated in a level 1 trauma centre with open reduction and fixation of DMCF using a 3.5-mm reconstruction plate or 3.5-mm small fragment locking compression plate between 2007 and 2015 were evaluated. Potential risk factors for construct failure were analysed using univariate analysis. Results: Two hundred and fifty-nine patients were analysed. Fifty DMCF (19%) were fixated with a reconstruction plate and 209 (81%) with a small fragment locking compression plate. Construct failure was seen in 18 patients (6.9%), including 5 broken plates and 13 with screw loosening. Eight percent of all reconstruction plates broke in contrast to 0.5 percent of all small fragment locking compression plates (p = 0.001). All broken implants were used as a bridging plate. Loosening of screws was seen in older patients and when the plate was fixated with less than three bicortical screws on one side of the fracture (p = 0.002). Conclusions: Overall construct failure after open reduction and plate fixation of DMCF occurred in 6.9 percent. Risk factors for plate breakage were the use of a reconstruction plate and a bridging method for fracture fixation. Risk factors for screw loosening were an increasing patient age and plate fixation with less than three bicortical screws on one side of the fracture. Recommendations: Based on the results of this study our recommendation is to use a small fragment locking compression plate for open reduction and internal fixation of DMCF. The surgeon should always strive to fixate the plate on both sides of the fracture with at least three bicortical screws
