    Inequality Trends and Determinants in Sri Lanka 1980-2002: A Shapley Approach to Decomposition

    Sri Lanka liberalised its economy in 1977, paving the way for more rapid economic growth and higher rates of job creation. But tensions over distributional issues still plague the body politic. This paper investigates the evolution of Sri Lanka's income distribution in the period 1980-2002 and uses the Shapley value decomposition methodology to determine underlying causes. The study finds that while average incomes rose across strata, the rich experienced more rapid income growth leading to greater inequality. Inequality change was driven by differential access to infrastructure, education, and occupation status. Demographic factors including ethnicity, and spatial factors, contributed very little. The study recommends policies that ensure more equitable access to income earning assets such as education and infrastructure services and make sure that increases in inequality do not take place along sectoral, regional and ethnic fault lines.income inequality; Sri Lanka; Shapley value decomposition

    Impact of Structural Change in Education, Industry and Infrastructure on Income Distribution in Sri Lanka

    Income inequality increased in Sri Lanka following trade liberalization in 1977. This study applies a semi-parametric method to investigate whether structural changes in education, industry and infrastructure access underlay the change in the distribution. The study finds that while the concentration of people shifted towards higher income ranges at every stage in the distribution between 1985 and 2002, changes in access to infrastructure triggered much of the shift. Higher levels of educational attainment also had an impact. But the middle classes appear to have benefited disproportionately more from the provision of education and infrastructure services than did the poor. The analysis recommends that such services are targeted more effectively towards those in the poorest income deciles to enable them to move out of poverty to higher income ranges.Income inequality; Sri Lanka; education; infrastructure; kernel density decomposition

    High Performance Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks for Industrial Internet of Things

    Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks (WSANs) enable cost-effective communication for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). To achieve predictability and reliability demanded by industrial applications, industrial wireless standards (e.g., WirelessHART) incorporate a set of unique features such as a centralized management architecture, Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH), and conservative channel selection. However, those features also incur significant degradation in performance, efficiency, and agility. To overcome these key limitations of existing industrial wireless technologies, this thesis work develops and empirically evaluates a suite of novel network protocols and algorithms. The primary contributions of this thesis are four-fold. (1) We first build an experimental testbed realizing key features of the WirelessHART protocol stack, and perform a series of empirical studies to uncover the limitations and potential improvements of existing network features. (2) We then investigate the impacts of the industrial WSAN protocol’s channel selection mechanism on routing and real-time performance, and present new channel and link selection strategies that improve route diversity and real-time performance. (3) To further enhance performance, we propose and design conservative channel reuse, a novel approach to support concurrent transmissions in a same wireless channel while maintaining a high degree of reliability. (4) Lastly, to address the limitation of the centralized architecture in handling network dynamics, we develop REACT, a Reliable, Efficient, and Adaptive Control Plane for centralized network management. REACT is designed to reduce the latency and energy cost of network reconfiguration by incorporating a reconfiguration planner to reduce a rescheduling cost, and an update engine providing efficient and reliable mechanisms to support schedule reconfiguration. All the network protocols and algorithms developed in this thesis have been empirically evaluated on the wireless testbed. This thesis represents a step toward next-generation IIoT for industrial automation that demands high-performance and agile wireless communication

    Inequalities at work : an investigation of the garment industry in Sri Lanka

    This thesis considers some of the different forms taken by the intersection of social inequalities and exploitation in Sri Lankan garment factories. It identifies the organisational policies and practices that reproduce different ‘inequality regimes’ (Acker, 2006) in three case study garment companies, including inequalities of gender, class, ethnicity, religion, age and sexuality. These ‘inequality regimes’ also operate as ‘factory regimes’ (Burawoy, 1983), through which companies seek to generate worker productivity. Further, the thesis analyses the relation between women’s domestic situations and their employment, showing how both are shaped by the wider Sri Lankan patriarchal social structure. In order to understand the inequalities experienced by women at work the thesis mainly seeks to answer two research questions. The first research question asks about the nature of intersecting inequalities in the three case study organisations. The second research question relates to how women going to work in garment factories changes women’s lives. This research question pays special attention to Elson and Pearson’s (1981) three possible tendencies in the relationship between the emergence of women’s factory employment and women’s subordination. Methodologically, the research was based on semi-structured interviews with 36 male and female participants, including owners, managers and workers across three case study organisations, and observations in headquarters offices and three factories over nine months in 2014-2015. The research found that although all three case study organisations are located in the Sri Lankan garment industry, each case study organisation is typified by a highly distinctive inequality regime characterised by different mechanisms for maintaining or modifying wider inequalities and generating workers’ consent: one a ‘despotic regime’, one a ‘maternalistic regime’ and one a ‘pragmatic regime’. Each of these is associated with a degree of individual worker agency, but little collective resistance. The research also found that women’s decisions to enter employment is influenced by the income level of their husbands or fathers. When household income is low women are more able to challenge familial patriarchal authority by taking up employment in garment factories. Women’s contributions to household finances are associated with their families gaining status, women being involved in family decision-making and men contributing to domestic work

    Conflict-Aware Real-Time Routing for Industrial Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks

    Process industries are adopting wireless sensor-actuator networks (WSANs) as the communication infrastructure. WirelessHART is an open industrial standard for WSANs that have seen world-wide deployments. Real-time scheduling and delay analysis have been studied for WSAN extensively. End-to-end delay in WSANs highly depends on routing, which is still open problem. This paper presents the first real-time routing design for WSAN. We first discuss end-to-end delays of WSANs, then present our real-time routing design. We have implemented and experimented our routing designs on a wireless testbed of 69 nodes. Both experimental results and simulations show that our routing design can improve the real-time performance significantly

    Cost effective and speedy construction for high-rise buildings using system formworks

    One of the most important factors in determining the success of a construction project in terms of speed, quality cost and safety of work is the formwork used in the project as it accounts about 40% of the total project cost of the structure. When considering a construction projects both the client and contractor want to finish the job early as the client wants to use the building for the intended purpose as soon as possible. The contractor wants to finish the construction as soon as possible to gain a higher profit. The most efficient way to speed up the work in high-rise building construction is by achieving a very short floor cycle. The floor cycle of a building mainly depend on the formwork type as it is the main time factor of a building project. The aim of this paper is to present about the existing formwork types in Sri Lanka and to show how each one will affect the project duration, project cost and the quality of the work. For that a research has been carried out and the results will present in this paper

    Maximizing Network Lifetime of Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks under Graph Routing

    Process industries are adopting wireless sensor-actuator networks (WSANs) as the communication infrastructure. The dynamics of industrial environments and stringent reliability requirements necessitate high degrees of fault tolerance in routing. WirelessHART is an open industrial standard for WSANs that have seen world-wide deployments. WirelessHART employs graph routing schemes to achieve network reliability through multiple paths. Since many industrial devices operate on batteries in harsh environments where changing batteries are prohibitively labor-intensive, WSANs need to achieve long network lifetime. To meet industrial demand for long-term reliable communication, this paper studies the problem of maximizing network lifetime for WSANs under graph routing. We formulate the network lifetime maximization problem for WirelessHART networks under graph routing. Then, we propose the optimal algorithm and two more efficient algorithms to prolong the network lifetime of WSANs. Experiments in a physical testbed and simulations show our linear programming relaxation and greedy heuristics can improve the network lifetime by up to 50% while preserving the reliability benefits of graph routing

    PKC Signaling Regulates Drug Resistance of the Fungal Pathogen Candida albicans via Circuitry Comprised of Mkc1, Calcineurin, and Hsp90

    Fungal pathogens exploit diverse mechanisms to survive exposure to antifungal drugs. This poses concern given the limited number of clinically useful antifungals and the growing population of immunocompromised individuals vulnerable to life-threatening fungal infection. To identify molecules that abrogate resistance to the most widely deployed class of antifungals, the azoles, we conducted a screen of 1,280 pharmacologically active compounds. Three out of seven hits that abolished azole resistance of a resistant mutant of the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and a clinical isolate of the leading human fungal pathogen Candida albicans were inhibitors of protein kinase C (PKC), which regulates cell wall integrity during growth, morphogenesis, and response to cell wall stress. Pharmacological or genetic impairment of Pkc1 conferred hypersensitivity to multiple drugs that target synthesis of the key cell membrane sterol ergosterol, including azoles, allylamines, and morpholines. Pkc1 enabled survival of cell membrane stress at least in part via the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade in both species, though through distinct downstream effectors. Strikingly, inhibition of Pkc1 phenocopied inhibition of the molecular chaperone Hsp90 or its client protein calcineurin. PKC signaling was required for calcineurin activation in response to drug exposure in S. cerevisiae. In contrast, Pkc1 and calcineurin independently regulate drug resistance via a common target in C. albicans. We identified an additional level of regulatory control in the C. albicans circuitry linking PKC signaling, Hsp90, and calcineurin as genetic reduction of Hsp90 led to depletion of the terminal MAPK, Mkc1. Deletion of C. albicans PKC1 rendered fungistatic ergosterol biosynthesis inhibitors fungicidal and attenuated virulence in a murine model of systemic candidiasis. This work establishes a new role for PKC signaling in drug resistance, novel circuitry through which Hsp90 regulates drug resistance, and that targeting stress response signaling provides a promising strategy for treating life-threatening fungal infections
