    Vortex Shedding from a Ground Tracking Radar Antenna and its 3D Tip Flow Characteristics

    Abstract: High-speed ground tracking radar systems rotating at about 60 rpm are currently being implemented as modern air traffic control systems in airports. The flow induced vibration and noise generation of the newly developed radar antennas are the two serious problems that jeopardize the successful deployment of the new ground aircraft tracking systems. This paper deals with the viscous flow details of the highly three-dimensional antenna tip section and the vortex shedding characteristics at Re=426,000. The current analysis uses a 3D computational approach for the computation of viscous flow details with the highly 3 D tip geometry. A 2D unsteady computation of the vortex shedding phenomena is also presented. This paper is a continuation of the computational study dealing with the determination of aerodynamic drag coefficients on ASDE-X (Advanced Surface Detection Equipment) antenna cross sections previously presented in Gumusel et al. [1]

    Decreased plasma nociceptin/orphanin FQ levels after acute coronary syndromes

    Foregoing researches made on the N/OFQ system brought up a possible role for this system in cardiovascular regulation. In this study we examined how N/OFQ levels of the blood plasma changed in acute cardiovascular diseases. Three cardiac patient groups were created: enzyme positive acute coronary syndrome (EPACS, n = 10), enzyme negative ACS (ENACS, n = 7) and ischemic heart disease (IHD, n = 11). We compared the patients to healthy control subjects (n = 31). We found significantly lower N/OFQ levels in the EPACS [6.86 (6.21–7.38) pg/ml], ENACS [6.97 (6.87–7.01) pg/ml and IHD groups [7.58 (7.23–8.20) pg/ml] compared to the control group [8.86 (7.27–9.83) pg/ml]. A significant correlation was detected between N/OFQ and white blood cell count (WBC), platelet count (PLT), creatine kinase (CK), glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) and cholesterol levels in the EPACS group.Decreased plasma N/OFQ is closely associated with the presence of acute cardiovascular disease, and the severity of symptoms has a significant negative correlation with the N/OFQ levels. We believe that the rate of N/OFQ depression is in association with the level of ischemic stress and the following inflammatory response. Further investigations are needed to clarify the relevance and elucidate the exact effects of the ischemic stress on the N/OFQ system

    The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of intravenous (i.v.) administration of rat hemopressin (rHP), 30-1000 μg/kg, on systemic arterial pressure (SAP), cardiac output (CO) and systemic vascular resistance (SVR) in the anesthetized rat. Bolus i.v. injections of rHP produced mild decreases in SAP that were dose-dependent. Since CO was not altered, the decreases in SAP reflect reductions in SVR. The systemic vasodilator response to rHP was not subject to tachyphylaxis. The systemic vasodilator response to rHP was abolished by l-nitro-arginine methylester (l-NAME) but was not altered by meclofenamate. In addition, rHP lacked direct contractile and relaxant activity on isolated rat aortic rings (AA) and pulmonary arterial rings (PA). The present data suggest rHP dilates the rat systemic vascular bed through the endogenous release of nitric oxide (NO) independent of the formation of cyclooxygenase products including prostacyclin. It is possible rHP acts as an endogenous vasodilator substance to regulate local blood flow during clinical states of altered red cell turnover, microvascular disease and hemolysis. © 2006 Elsevier Inc.     Oxidative stress markers, trace elements, and endocrine disrupting chemicals in children with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis

    In this study, we aimed to investigate whether bisphenol A (BPA) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) exposure have any association with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) and its biomarkers and to determine whether oxidative stress biomarkers and trace element levels showed any alterations in children with HT. We found that superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities are lower in HT group from control (24% and 46%, respectively, p ' 0.05). Zinc levels were significantly lower in HT group vs. control. In addition, the levels of mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) which is the primary metabolite for DEHP, were markedly higher in HT group compared to control (p ' 0.05). A negative correlation was observed between urinary BPA levels and fT4. In children with HT, oxidant/antioxidant balance is changed and these differences may be related by EDC exposure, the importance of which should be elucidated with further studies. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

    Plasma phthalate and bisphenol a levels and oxidant-antioxidant status in autistic children

    Phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) are endocrine disruting chemicals (EDCs) that are suggested to exert neurotoxic effects. This study aimed to determine plasma phthalates and BPA levels along with oxidant/antioxidant status in autistic children [n = 51; including 12 children were diagnosed with "Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)]. Plasma levels of BPA, di (2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEHP) and its main metabolite mono (2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (MEHP); thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) and carbonyl groups; erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GPx1), thioredoxin reductase (TrxR), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities and glutathione (GSH) and selenium levels were measured. Plasma BPA levels of children with PDD-NOS were significantly higher than both classic autistic children and controls (n=50). Carbonyl, selenium concentrations and GPx1, SOD and GR activities were higher (p < 0.05); CAT activity was markedly lower in study group. BPA exposure might be associated with PDD-NOS. Intracellular imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant status might facilitate its neurotoxicity. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    The effects of different bisphenol derivatives on oxidative stress, DNA damage and DNA repair in RWPE-1 cells: A comparative study

    Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known endocrine disruptor and it is widely used mainly in the plastics industry. Due to recent reports on its possible impact on health (particularly on the male reproductive system), bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) are now being used as alternatives. In this study, RWPE-1 cells were used as a model to compare cytotoxicity, oxidative stress-causing potential and genotoxicity of these chemicals. In addition, the effects of the bisphenol derivatives were assessed on DNA repair proteins. RWPE-1 cells were incubated with BPA, BPF, and BPS at concentrations of 0–600 μM for 24 h. The inhibitory concentration 20 (IC20, concentration that causes 20% of cell viability loss) values for BPA, BPF, and BPS were 45, 65, and 108 μM, respectively. These results indicated that cytotoxicity potentials were ranked as BPA &gt; BPF &gt; BPS. We also found alterations in superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase activities, and glutathione and total antioxidant capacity in all bisphenol-exposed groups. In the standard and modified Comet assay, BPS produced significantly higher levels of DNA damage vs the control. DNA repair proteins (OGG1, Ape-1, and MyH) involved in the base excision repair pathway, as well as p53 protein levels were down-regulated in all of the bisphenol-exposed groups. We found that the BPA alternatives were also cytotoxic and genotoxic, and changed the expressions of DNA repair enzymes. Therefore, further studies are needed to assess whether they can be used safely as alternatives to BPA or not. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
