A rich heritage of traditional pear varieties is kept in national Portuguese collections. Out of these varieties, “Rocha” dominates national pear production. Although a noticeable phenotypic variation among clones of this variety has been reported, little is known about its genetic variability, as to date molecular studies have been performed on a single “Rocha” clone. Eleven Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR) markers were used to assess the genetic diversity of 130 local cultivars, 80 of them being “Rocha” clones. The results allowed the di erentiation of 75 genotypes of which 29 are “Rocha”. Three synonyms groups and four homonymous groups of other local varieties were confirmed. A Bayesian model-based clustering approach identified two distinct clusters. Using flow cytometry, six cultivars were found to be triploids. These results show high genetic variability among “Rocha” clones. In conclusion, there is a need for di erent “Rocha” clones to be preserved to enable the correct selection of the multiplication materialinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The awakening and the voices in Niketche: uma história de poligamia, by Paulina Chiziane

Questioning the positions occupy in a patriarchal society is one of Niketche's main reflections: Paulina Chiziane's story of polygamy. From the dialogues with the theories of Spivak, Sandra Gilbert, Susan Gubar, one can see how there is a need for women to have their place of speech, thus demonstrating a change in their situation of subordination. Paulina Chiziane notes that there is no place for women where they can talk and be heard and, therefore, writes a narrative with performed and told by a woman. With her writing, Chizian breaks the objectification oj women made by male literature. It is observed that the struggle for a speech space happens both in the real world, undertaken by the writer, and in the literary universe, performed by Rami. The awareness of having her voice silenced is driven by the anguish the character (and we dare say the writer too) feels as she becomes aware of her subordinate place in society. It is also noted that the use of popular sayings, oral knowledge and proverbs would be a way to bring women into a prominent position and also preserve the oral tradition and make an appreciation of African culture.Questioning the positions women occupy in a patriarchal society is one of Niketche's main reflections: Paulina Chiziane's story of polygamy. Working as a translator is a great challenge and requires responsibility. Consequently, the professional who wants to work in this area must have knowledge of the most different kinds of texts to be translated; especially when the text is poetry, because poetry is a text that has many particularities that are difficult to maintain in the translation. This article is an academic, theoretical and comparative research based on Rónai (2012), Rose (1981), Niknasab e Pishbin (2001), Abbasi e Manafi Anari (2004), Prado (2011), Bandeira (1978), Junqueira (2012), Geronimo (2015). Based on these authors, we make an objective and comparative analysis of two translations of the poem "Still I Rise", one by Francesca Angiolillo and another by Walnice Nogueira Galvão. With the analysis, we explain the strategies and choices used by translators, considering the theory of translation. The European Commission aims to develop a more sustainable environment for research infrastructures ecosystem, and to ensure that the benefits and impacts are widely perceived by research communities and led to research excellence. This vision is reflected in a range of international and European documents. Recent work conducted by the OECD and the European Commission, particularly by ESFRI and e-IRG, have stated the need to make structural changes in the EU framework for research infrastructures (RIs). In line with this strategic vision, DARIAH intends to establish itself as a sustainable research infrastructure. DESIR (DARIAH ERIC Sustainability Refined) work package 6 TRUST contributes to DARIAH’s long-term sustainability by measuring acceptance and impact of DARIAH in new cross-disciplinary DARIAH communities and core groups. This was the base to define the theoretical and methodological framework that supported the research here presented. Therefore, this report focuses on the development of recommendations and strategies to support and increase confidence in DARIAH services and infrastructure, aiming at contributing to a major DESIR goal, which is to enlarge DARIAH by engaging new cross-disciplinary communities and considering their specific requirements. The proposed recommendations could set the basis for a broader debate within the DARIAH and RIs landscape on the actions to be taken at all decision levels in order to address a vision for longer-term sustainable RI. So, this report intends to be a policy document that aims at inspiring the future path of DARIAH, contributing to its sustainability and to fulfil the mission for which it was created. The recommendations stem from the analytical work developed from the contributions of multiple sources of information: an academically-driven multi-country survey (see D6.2); 33 qualitative interviews in three different countries; a workshop with DARIAH national coordinators held in Warsaw; contributions from DESIR partners who lead other work projects within the project; and DESIR Winter School “Shaping New Approaches to Data Management in Arts and Humanities”. After defining the entire set of recommendations, they were grouped according to three main strategic frameworks (sustainability, scope and DARIAH Strategic Plan) and visually displayed in a “Recommendations & Community Engagement Tool” (https://dariah.peopleware.pt), an open platform that supports DARIAH, strengthening the link with arts and humanities communities. The new DARIAH Strategic Plan for the next seven years, which will be followed by the publication of a Strategic Action Plan, represents a big opportunity to address sustainability, both as a conceptual level and in terms of organizational and operational configuration. Therefore, the main findings are summarized in seven key recommendations, linked with the strategic pillars of the recent published DARIAH Strategic Plan:1. Promote research excellence with inclusive, collaborative, bureaucracy free and community-driven approach.2. Ensure the integration of tools, services, data and resources within DARIAH community and with other Research Infrastructures (e.g. by gathering them on a platform such as the Marketplace).3. Foster a collaborative learning environment and anticipate the skills of the future through a joint strategy for education and training (e.g. DARIAH-CAMPUS).4. Establish a flexible, participatory and effective governance model with a clear and sustainable business plan.5. Strengthen DARIAH’s representation in European and International policy arena, expanding its visibility and cooperation outside EU borders.6. Broaden and extend DARIAH’s role, action and benefits towards the strengthening of scientific citizenship in Europe.7. Set up means for monitoring and bringing communities together, while respecting diversity on an institutional, scientific, disciplinary and methodological level. The work developed in the DESIR project - particularly this set of recommendations - could be a contribution to foster the implementation of guidelines and short and long-term actions to improve DARIAH’s sustainability and firmly establish it as a long-term leader and partner within arts and humanities communities

Discordance between the patient’s and physician’s global assessment in rheumatoid arthritis : data from the REAL study—Brazil

    Get PDF
Background Discordance between patient’s global assessment (PtGA) and physician’s global assessment (PhGA) has been described in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Understanding the reasons for this discrepancy is important in the context of treat-to-target treatment strategy. Objective To assess the determinants of PtGA and PhGA and factors associated with discordance between them. Methods The REAL study included RA patients from Brazilian public health centers. Clinical, laboratory and outcomes measures were collected. PtGA and the PhGA were rated on a visual analog scale and analyzed. Three groups were defined: no discordance (difference between PtGA and PhGA within 3 cm), positive discordance (PtGA exceeding PhGA by >3 cm), and negative discordance (PtGA less than PhGA by >3 cm). Multivariate regression analysis was used to identify determinants of PtGA and PhGA and their discordance. Results 1115 patients (89,4% female, mean age 56.7y and median disease duration of 12.7y) were enrolled. Two factors were associated with PtGA in the final multivariate model: one point increase in the pain scale leads to an increase of 0.62 in PtGA; one point increase in HAQ increases by 9,25 points the PtGA. The factors associated with PhGA were pain scale, number of tender and swollen joints (NTJ and NSJ), positive RF, ESR, HAQ-DI and use of corticosteroids. Discordance between patient and physician was found in 30.52%: positive discordance in 24.6% and negative discordance in 5.92%. An increase of one point in the NSJ was associated with a 12% increase in the chance of negative discordance. The chance of positive discordance increased by 90% and 2% for each unit increased in HAQ-DI and pain scale respectively. Finally, the chance of positive discordance decreased by 3% for each point increased in NTJ and by 15% for each point increased in NSJ. Conclusion In one-third of the assessments, there was disagreement between PtGA and PhGA (a positive discordance was found in 80% of them). Pain and function were determinants for patients to estimate disease activity, while swollen joints was the main factor related to a worse physician’s evaluation. These data show how different can be the perspectives of patients and assistants

ABSTRACT: A preliminary study presents a set of variscan granitoids, which intruded the Ossa Morena Zone (OMZ), at the Arraiolos-Pavia region. Field, petrographic and geochemical characterization defines the bases for a general classification of the Ossa Morena Zone granitoids, similar to that of Central Iberian Zone (CIZ). The obtained data pointed out the occurrence of enormous volumes of basic and intermediated compositions. Granitoids containing biotite, amphibole and calcic plagioclase, granitoids are frequent, showing particular features of the OMZ, relatively to the CIZ. Geochemical data indicate sub-alkaline sequences and different magmatic sources, from mantle and crust. These sequences have reached different stages of magmatic evolution. The most evolved melts are enriched in alkalis gave compositions for the alkaline field in the TAS diagram (alkali feldspar granite).

Abstract

Introduction

Pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy is a rare complication of malignant diseases. The diagnosis is extremely difficult and is most often performed after death. Invariably, patients develop acute pulmonary hypertension causing right heart failure, shortness of breath and death in a few days. We describe the clinical and radiological findings of a patient who presented with this complication.

Case presentation

A 28-year-old Caucasian woman with a previous history of pelvic tumor resection two months previously, suggestive of metastatic adenocarcinoma, presented with intense shortness of breath. A computed tomography scan showed signs of acute cor pulmonale and diffuse nodular opacities associated with a tree-in-bud pattern disseminated through her lungs, suggestive of bronchiolitis. Our patient's condition worsened and she underwent a surgical biopsy. Pathologic analysis of the biopsied specimens revealed pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy. Our patient's tumor evolved from a gastric origin (Krukenberg tumor). She underwent progressive clinical deterioration and died less than 24 hours after the biopsy. None of the cases described previously in the literature had diffuse centrilobular nodular opacities associated with a tree-in-bud pattern disseminated through the lungs, as in our case.

Conclusion

Pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy should be considered in cancer patients with rapidly progressing dyspnea, chest computed tomography findings compatible with pulmonary hypertension and typical findings of inflammatory bronchiolitis.</p

Pequi is one of the most important fruits of Cerrado biome, and it is very consumed mainly by the population of west central of Brazil. The pequi is composed of bark, pulp and seeds, the bark of the ripe fruit correspond to approximately 84% of its weight, being the great majority discarded as garbage, causing environmental impact. On this, this research had as objective to characterize the barks of the pequi, aiming its use as biomass. For this purpose, moisture content analyzes were performed, and ashes, volatile materials, fixed carbon, specific mass, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), grain size, and higher calorific value analysis as well, according to Brazilian standards ABNT NBR 8112 and 8633. The analyses showed that the bark of the in natura pequi has a high moisture content, around 73%, and 2.2% of ash content. The higher calorific value obtained to the pequi bark was around 15 MJ kg-1 being similar to other agricultural leavings used to generate electrical power. The thermogravimetric analysis showed that the pequi bark has a high percentage of lignin being about 50% compared to 30% in the eucalyptus bark, the higher the amount of lignin the higher the calorific value. The results obtained showed that the pequi bark presents high using potential as a biomass to generate electrical power
