    Integrated systems improve the sustainability of soybean cultivation in the tropical region

    Inter-cropping between annual crops with tropical forages through integration crop-livestock systems (ICL) is considered a sustainable option to increase crop diversity and soybean productivity. In this study, we evaluated (1) the biomass production, desiccation efficiency, nutrient accumulation, and biomass decomposition of soil crop residues produced by Panicum maximum plants intercropped with maize in two different sowing methods during the second harvest and (2) investigated how soil crop residues impact the productivity of soybean. The experiment was conducted in a complete block design with three replicates. We compared conventional soybean cultivation with soybean cultivated over soil crop residues produced by a previous integration between maize and two Panicum maximum cultivars: Tamani and Zuri guinea grass, within and between rows of maize plants. Our results showed that Tamani guinea grass showed the highest desiccation efficiency. Zuri and Tamani guinea grass cultivated within and between maize plants resulted in higher biomass production and nutrient cycling potential, resulting in an increase of 28.4% in soybean productivity, compared to soybean grown without soil crop residues. We concluded that ICL system is an efficient method to increase the sustainability of soybean cultivation

    Facial maxillofacial prosthesis (P.B.M.F) is a specialty of dentistry responsible for oral, facial and functional rehabilitation with extraoral and intraoralintraoral prostheses of patients with maxillofacial defects. The shortage of specialized professionals is critical, as during the treatment of a malignant neoplasm, loss of facial structure may occur, where the specialized professional has the possibility of prosthetically rehabilitating the lost part, be it the eyeball, oculopalpebral, auricular, nasal, palate obturator aimed at improving the patient's self-esteem and social reintegration. Contact with the discipline is important for the evolution of the specialty, as well as the interest of undergraduates and students. P.B.M.F plays an important role in the social reintegration of a patient mutilated by oral neoplasia today. The advancement of aesthetic dentistry came with the need to enhance a more beautiful, harmonious and younger appearance of a patient who meets beauty standards. On the other hand, the patient with the loss of part of the face he fought for, with a diagnosis that threatened his life, seeks to become inconspicuous in the crowd. The objective of this work is to carry out a literature review exposing the need for professionals and academics to contact the P.B.M.F. and the types of prostheses used. The methodology was based on data taken from the Scielo, Pubmed and Google Scholar platforms over the last 10 years, with articles found that were mostly case reports. Maxillofacial prosthesis is a branch of dental prosthesis associated with the restoration and/or replacement of stomatognathic and craniofacial structures with prostheses, which may or may not be removed regularly or electively.A prótese bucomaxilofacial (P.B.M.F,) facial é uma especialidade da odontologia responsável pela reabilitação oral, facial e funcional com próteses extraorais e intra-oraisintraorais de pacientes com defeitos maxilofaciais. A escassez de profissionais especializados é crítica, pois durante um tratamento de uma neoplasia maligna pode ocorrer a perda de estrutura da face, onde o profissional especializado tem a possibilidade de reabilitar proteticamente a parte perdida seja ela de globo ocular, oculopalpebral, auricular, nasal, obturadora de palato visando a melhora da auto estima e a reintegração social do paciente. O contato com a disciplina é importante para a evolução da especialidade, assim como interesse de graduandos e discentes. A P.B.M.F tem um papel importante na reintegração social de um paciente mutilado pela neoplasia bucal nos dias de hoje. O avanço da odontologia estética veio com a necessidade de se enaltecer uma aparência mais bela, harmoniosa e mais jovem de um paciente que se enquadra nos padrões de beleza. Em contrapartida, o paciente com perda de parte da face que lutou, com um diagnóstico que ameaçou sua vida, busca se tornar imperceptível no meio da multidão. O objetivo deste trabalho é realizar uma revisão de literatura expondo a necessidade do contato dos profissionais e acadêmicos com a P.B.M.F.  e os tipos de próteses usadas. A metodologia se baseou em dados retirados das plataformas Scielo, Pubmed e Google Acadêmico dos últimos 10 anos, sendo encontrados artigos que na sua maioria eram relatos de caso.     COVID-19 outcomes in people living with HIV: Peering through the waves

    Objective: To evaluate clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients infected with HIV, and to compare with a paired sample without HIV infection. Methods: This is a substudy of a Brazilian multicentric cohort that comprised two periods (2020 and 2021). Data was obtained through the retrospective review of medical records. Primary outcomes were admission to the intensive care unit, invasive mechanical ventilation, and death. Patients with HIV and controls were matched for age, sex, number of comorbidities, and hospital of origin using the technique of propensity score matching (up to 4:1). They were compared using the Chi-Square or Fisher's Exact tests for categorical variables and the Wilcoxon for numerical variables. Results: Throughout the study, 17,101 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized, and 130 (0.76%) of those were infected with HIV. The median age was 54 (IQR: 43.0;64.0) years in 2020 and 53 (IQR: 46.0;63.5) years in 2021, with a predominance of females in both periods. People Living with HIV (PLHIV) and their controls showed similar prevalence for admission to the ICU and invasive mechanical ventilation requirement in the two periods, with no significant differences. In 2020, in-hospital mortality was higher in the PLHIV compared to the controls (27.9% vs. 17.7%; p = 0.049), but there was no difference in mortality between groups in 2021 (25.0% vs. 25.1%; p > 0.999). Conclusions: Our results reiterate that PLHIV were at higher risk of COVID-19 mortality in the early stages of the pandemic, however, this finding did not sustain in 2021, when the mortality rate is similar to the control group

    High anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody seroconversion rates before the second wave in Manaus, Brazil, and the protective effect of social behaviour measures: results from the prospective DETECTCoV-19 cohort

    Background: The city of Manaus, Brazil, has seen two collapses of the health system due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We report anti-SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid IgG antibody seroconversion rates and associated risk factors in Manaus residents before the second wave of the epidemic in Brazil. Methods: A convenience sample of adult (aged ≥18 years) residents of Manaus was recruited through online and university website advertising into the DETECTCoV-19 study cohort. The current analysis of seroconversion included a subgroup of DETECTCoV-19 participants who had at least two serum sample collections separated by at least 4 weeks between Aug 19 and Oct 2, 2020 (visit 1), and Oct 19 and Nov 27, 2020 (visit 2). Those who reported (or had no data on) having a COVID-19 diagnosis before visit 1, and who were positive for anti-SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid IgG antibodies at visit 1 were excluded. Using an in-house ELISA, the reactivity index (RI; calculated as the optical density ratio of the sample to the negative control) for serum anti-SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid IgG antibodies was measured at both visits. We calculated the incidence of seroconversion (defined as RI values ≤1·5 at visit 1 and ≥1·5 at visit 2, and a ratio >2 between the visit 2 and visit 1 RI values) during the study period, as well as incidence rate ratios (IRRs) through cluster-corrected and adjusted Poisson regression models to analyse associations between seroconversion and variables related to sociodemographic characteristics, health access, comorbidities, COVID-19 exposure, protective behaviours, and symptoms. Findings: 2496 DETECTCoV-19 cohort participants returned for a follow-up visit between Oct 19 and Nov 27, 2020, of whom 204 reported having COVID-19 before the first visit and 24 had no data regarding previous disease status. 559 participants were seropositive for anti-SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid IgG antibodies at baseline. Of the remaining 1709 participants who were seronegative at baseline, 71 did not meet the criteria for seroconversion and were excluded from the analyses. Among the remaining 1638 participants who were seronegative at baseline, 214 showed seroconversion at visit 2. The seroconversion incidence was 13·06% (95% CI 11·52–14·79) overall and 6·78% (5·61–8·10) for symptomatic seroconversion, over a median follow-up period of 57 days (IQR 54–61). 48·1% of seroconversion events were estimated to be asymptomatic. The sample had higher proportions of affluent and higher-educated people than those reported for the Manaus city population. In the fully adjusted and corrected model, risk factors for seroconversion before visit 2 were having a COVID-19 case in the household (IRR 1·49 [95% CI 1·21–1·83]), not wearing a mask during contact with a person with COVID-19 (1·25 [1·09–1·45]), relaxation of physical distancing (1·31 [1·05–1·64]), and having flu-like symptoms (1·79 [1·23–2·59]) or a COVID-19 diagnosis (3·57 [2·27–5·63]) between the first and second visits, whereas working remotely was associated with lower incidence (0·74 [0·56–0·97]). Interpretation: An intense infection transmission period preceded the second wave of COVID-19 in Manaus. Several modifiable behaviours increased the risk of seroconversion, including non-compliance with non-pharmaceutical interventions measures such as not wearing a mask during contact, relaxation of protective measures, and non-remote working. Increased testing in high-transmission areas is needed to provide timely information about ongoing transmission and aid appropriate implementation of transmission mitigation measures.     RESUMO A produção de café conilon em sistemas de manejo orgânico tem aumentado no Estado do Espírito Santo. Porém, faltam informações sobre o impacto desse manejo sobre os estoques de carbono e nitrogênio do solo. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da adubação orgânica sobre os estoques de C e N e a densidade do solo (Ds) em agrossistema de café conilon. O experimento foi implantado em lavoura localizada no município de Linhares, ES, no delineamento em blocos casualizados com distribuição fatorial 2 × 2 × 5, com três repetições, sendo os fatores: dois compostos orgânicos; presença e ausência da leguminosa feijão-de-porco nas entrelinhas; e cinco proporções de cada composto em substituição à adubação mineral recomendada (0; 25; 50; 75; e 100 %). Cada repetição foi formada por amostragem de solo sob a copa de uma planta em parcela com 30 cafeeiros. Os compostos foram: composto 1, preparado com capim-elefante e palha de café na proporção 1:1 (v:v); e composto 2, preparado com capim-elefante, palha de café e cama de frango na proporção 2:1:1 (v:v:v). As coletas de solo foram realizadas 240 dias após a adubação (240DAPA) do 1º ano agrícola e aos 30 dias após a 1ª etapa da adubação (30DAPA) do 2º ano agrícola. O uso de composto na adubação do cafeeiro acarretou redução da Ds de aproximadamente 13 %. O incremento das proporções de compostos na adubação aumentou o teor e o estoque de C e N do solo aos 30DAPA do 2º ano agrícola. Houve acréscimos de 11 e 0,4 Mg ha-1 para o estoque de C e N, respectivamente, para cafeeiros adubados com 100 % de composto 1, em relação à adubação mineral.     Yeast Surface Display (YSD) is a strategy to anchor proteins on the yeast cell wall which has been employed to increase enzyme stability thus decreasing production costs. Lipase B from Candida antarctica (LipB) is one of the most studied enzymes in the context of industrial biotechnology. This study aimed to assess the biochemical features of this important biocatalyst when immobilized on the cell surface of the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris using the YSD approach. For that purpose, two anchors were tested. The first (Flo9) was identified after a prospection of the P. pastoris genome being related to the family of flocculins similar to Flo1 but significantly smaller. The second is the Protein with Internal Repeats (Pir1) from P. pastoris. An immunolocalization assay showed that both anchor proteins were able to display the reporter protein EGFP in the yeast outer cell wall. LipB was expressed in P. pastoris fused either to Flo9 (FLOLIPB) or Pir1 (PIRLIPB). Both constructions showed hydrolytic activity towards tributyrin (>100 U/mgdcw and >80 U/mgdcw, respectively), optimal hydrolytic activity around 45°C and pH 7.0, higher thermostability at 45°C and stability in organic solvents when compared to a free lipase

    Residual biomass potential of commercial and pre-commercial sugarcane cultivars

    Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is an efficient and sustainable alternative for energy generation compared to non-renewable sources. Currently, during the mechanized harvest process, the straw left in the field can be used in part for the second generation ethanol and increasing the electric energy production. Thus, this study aimed to provide information on the potential for residual biomass cultivars of sugarcane cropping system. This study provides the following information: yield of straw, depending on the calculated leaf area index and the number of tillers per linear meter; primary energy production of several sugarcane genotypes; contribution of dry tops and leaves; biomass yield; and evaluation of fiber, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Preliminary results obtained by researchers of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, and reCviews related studies are presented. The results suggest that the production of sugarcane straw content varies according to the cultivars; the greater mass of sugarcane straw is in the top leaves and that the potential for the crude energy production of sugarcane per area unit can be increased using fiber-rich species or species that produce more straw. The straw indexes was shown to be a good indicator and allow the estimation of straw volumes generated in a sugarcane crop. The cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin composition in sugarcane is distinct among varieties. Therefore, it is possible to develop distinct biomass materials for energy production and for the development of sugarcane mills using biochemical processes and thermal routes
