Urbanism as a [Rural] way of life, John Steinbeck versus the Sociological School of Chicago

Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e ExpressãoEsta dissertação explora as relações entre a concepção de cultura urbana - e por oposição, de cultura não-urbana/rural- da "Escola de Chicago" e a representação da cultura rural em três obras de John Steinbeck que exploram a temática dos bóias-frias rurais na segunda metade da década de 30. Tal comparação se dá a partir da premissa de que ambas são expressões de práticas sociais identificadas com o declínio da economia liberal e o desenvolviemnto da economia coletivista capitalista, que culminou com a grande depressão. Este trabalho, em conseqüência, analisa o desenvovlimento do modelo teórico metodológico do "Urbanismo", bem como o desenvolviemnto da(s) temática(s), tese(s) e forma(s) literária(s) de In Dubious Batlle (1936), Of Mice and Man (1937) e The Grapes of Wrath (1939), dentro dos contextos sociais nos quais elas surgem e que lhes dão sentido histórico. Assim, tem-se como objetivo analisar, nestas obras, o desenvolviemnto das idéias de John Steinbeck acerca da cultura rural, da sua manutenção e transformação, comparando-as e contrastando-as àquelas pertinentes ao conceito sociológico de "Urbanismo" da Escola de Chicago, o qual inaugurou formalmente a sociologia urbana nos Estados Unidops com a publicação, em 1938, do artigo de Louis Wirth, "O Urbanismo como Modo de Vida"

A modernidade e os encontros turísticos: turistas na Barra de Lagoa

O turismo pode ser compreendido como um fenômeno constituinte da modernidade, a partir das particularidades da experiência moderna. Atualmente, tem sido uma das atividades econômicas que mais cresce no mundo. Entretanto, independentemente dos aspectos econômicos relacionados ao turismo, há outras dimensões do fenômeno turístico que têm sido investigadas no campo das Ciências Humanas, onde se encontram diferentes áreas de conhecimento em suas distintas formas de percepção do fenômeno turístico. Ao mesmo tempo, a categoria de análise turismo tem sido problematizada pelos estudiosos, e o tema tem suscitado abordagens mais interdisciplinares. Nesse contexto, parte-se do entendimento do significado do turismo como fenômeno a ser compreendido a partir da condição moderna e de seus reflexos em nossas sociedades contemporâneas. Busca-se, nesse sentido, resgatar certas dimensões da modernidade, assim como as formas pelas quais o turismo tem sido tratado no debate acadêmico, visando contribuir para este debate nas Ciências Humanas, em especial, nas Ciências Sociais. Entretanto a própria problematização da categoria turismo passa pela necessidade de investigações empíricas. Nesse sentido, o turismo pode ser entendido como uma forma de experiência concretizada pelas práticas turísticas. Assim, a figura do "turista" é um elemento central da constituição do fenômeno turístico e representa elementos da experiência moderna contemporânea, associados à subjetividade. Para tratar dessas questões teóricas e empíricas, pesquisou-se uma das formas pelas quais tem-se constituído a experiência turística, que é a visitação a balneários, que apresenta uma história particular associada à modernidade e ao turismo. No caso do Brasil, o turismo nas praias é uma das principais manifestações das práticas turísticas, contexto em que cidades como Florianópolis-SC têm sido cenário de crescente fluxo de turistas e também objeto de investigação acadêmica, assim como institucional. Como espaço turístico em Florianópolis, foi escolhida a praia da Barra da Lagoa. Busca-se, assim, também contribuir nos estudos sobre turismo em Florianópolis, a partir das particularidades da Barra da Lagoa como local turístico. Para tal, adotamos a concepção de "encontros turísticos", enquanto um conjunto de elementos diversos associados aos sentimentos e envolvendo a relação com pessoas, lugares, natureza e self. Como resultado, pode-se pensar o turismo como práticas que se constituem de pequenos encontros com os sentimentos e com o self. Os "encontros turísticos" incluem os encontros do turista consigo mesmo, ou com o self. Florianópolis e a Barra da Lagoa são locais onde se manifestam essas experiências subjetivas e que têm abarcado diversos tipos de "encontros turísticos".The subject of this research is modernity and tourism. Tourism can be understood as a phenomenon that constitutes modernity considering particularities of modern experience. Currently it is one of the fastest growing economic activities. However, regardless of economic aspects related to tourism, there are other dimensions of the tourist phenomenon that have been investigated in the field of Human Sciences, presenting different areas of knowledge in their distinct forms of perception of the tourist phenomenon. At the same time, scholars have problematized "tourism" as an analysis category, and the subject has aroused rather interdisciplinary approaches. In this context, we start from the awareness of the meaning of tourism as a phenomenon to be understood from the modern condition, and of its reflexes in our contemporary societies. In this sense, we try to recover certain dimensions of modernity, as well as the forms through which tourism has been dealt with in the academic debate, aiming at contributing to this debate in Human Sciences, but especially in the Social Sciences. Yet problematizing the category "tourism" itself involves the need for empiric investigation. In this sense, tourism can be understood as a form of experience concretized by tourist practices. So the figure of the "tourist" is a central element in the constitution of the tourist phenomenon, and represents elements of the contemporary modern experience associated to subjectivity. In order to deal with such theoretical and empirical matters, we have investigated one of the forms that have constituted the tourist experience, which is visiting beach resorts, presenting a particular history associated with modernity and tourism. In the case of Brazil, beach tourism is one the main manifestations of tourist practices, a context in which cities such as Florianópolis (SC - Brazil) has been the scenario of a growing flow of tourists, and also the object of both academic and institutional investigation. The beach resort Barra da Lagoa, Florianópolis, was chosen as the tourist space. The aim of this choice is to contribute to studies on tourism in Florianópolis starting from the particularities of the Barra da Lagoa as a tourist place. For such we have adopted the conception of "tourist encounters" as a set of diverse elements associated to feelings and involving the relationship with people, places, nature and the self. As a result we can think of tourism as practices consisting of small encounters with feelings and with the self. "Tourist encounters" include the encounter of the tourist with himself/herself or with the self. Florianópolis and Barra da Lagoa are places where such subjective experiences take place, and which have encompassed several kinds of "tourist encounters"

Self-Regulation, Engagement, and Developmental Functioning in Preschool-Aged Children

Self-regulation can be relevant for engagement, as children need to be able to modulate behaviors and control attention to be engaged. Although previous studies focus on the relation between self-regulation and engagement, little is known about this subject in children with disabilities or at risk. This study analyzes relations between self-regulation and engagement in inclusive preschool settings, considering children’s developmental functioning (DF). The main goal is to examine whether DF moderates the relation between self-regulation and engagement. Participants include three groups of children: with disabilities (n = 54), at risk (n = 78), and typically developing (n = 115). DF was assessed with a short version of the Matrix for Assessment of Activities and Participation; self-regulation with Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders; and engagement with Child Observation in Preschool. Results indicated that higher levels of self-regulation were related to higher levels of engagement. A moderation effect between self-regulation and DF was also found: in the group of children with disabilities, the influence of self-regulation on engagement was larger. Assédio moral no trabalho e suas consequências: Estudo de caso em instituição federal de ensino superior

Neste artigo, tem-se como objetivo caracterizar um caso de assédio moral ocorrido em uma instituição federal de ensino superior e identificar suas consequências para diferentes atores. Foi realizado um estudo de caso, de natureza descritiva e qualitativa. Os dados foram coletados por meio de pesquisa documental, com a análise do processo administrativo, que traz depoimentos de alguns dos envolvidos no caso, e de entrevista em profundidade com o servidor assediado. Os resultados evidenciaram a ocorrência de assédio moral do tipo vertical descendente, em uma situação caracterizada por abuso de poder, autoritarismo e manipulação perversa, com severas consequências para a saúde física, psíquica e emocional do assediado. Verificou-se que a não atuação da área de Recursos Humanos na intermediação do conflito, a cultura e a estrutura da instituição podem ter favorecido a ocorrência do caso e motivado a impunidade do assediador. Para a organização, as ocorrências geraram degradação do ambiente de trabalho, desmotivação e cisão da equipe, bem como declínio do rendimento e outras perdas financeiras. À sociedade, além das questões financeiras, couberam sérios prejuízos, por tratar-se de uma instituição pública que deveria zelar pelos bens e direitos do cidadão, tanto no âmbito financeiro como no produtivo ou no social. Conclui-se que o assédio moral se trata de um processo multidimensional, que viola as garantias fundamentais do indivíduo e traz severos impactos à sua saúde, além de danos à organização e à sociedade.El objetivo en este artículo es caracterizar un caso de acoso moral ocurrido en una institución federal de educación superior e identificar sus consecuencias para los diferentes actores. Se llevó a cabo un estudio de caso descriptivo y cualitativo. Los datos se recopilaron por medio de investigación documental, con el análisis del proceso administrativo, que trae declaraciones de algunas personas implicadas en el caso, y se realizó una entrevista en profundidad con el funcionario acosado. Los resultados constataron la presencia del acoso moral vertical descendente, en una situación de abuso de poder, autoritarismo y manipulación perversa, con graves consecuencias para la salud física, mental y emocional del acosado. Se encontró que la falta de actuación del departamento de recursos humanos en la mediación del conflicto, la cultura y la estructura de la institución posiblemente favorecieron el caso y dieron lugar a la impunidad del acosador. Para la organización, los eventos ocasionaron la degradación del ambiente de trabajo, la desmotivación y la escisión del equipo, así como la disminución de los resultados y otras pérdidas financieras. Para la sociedad, además de las cuestiones financieras, hay perjuicios, ya que se trata de una institución pública que debería cuidar de los bienes y derechos del ciudadano, sea en el ámbito financiero, productivo o social. Se concluye que el acoso moral es un proceso multidimensional, que viola las garantías fundamentales de la persona y trae graves consecuencias para su salud, así como daños a la organización y la sociedad.This paper aims to characterize a case of moral harassment in a federal institution of higher education and to identify its consequences for the different actors. We carried out a descriptive and qualitative case study and collected data by means of documentary research with an analysis of the related administrative process, which includes statements of those involved in the case, and an in-depth interview with the harassed employee. The results revealed the occurrence of vertical descendant moral harassment characterized by abuse of power, authoritarianism and perverse manipulation, with severe consequences for the harassed employee´s physical, mental and emotional health. We found that the institution's human resources management department's non-action in terms of intermediating the conflict and the institutional culture and structure may all have favored the occurrence of the case and the harasser´s impunity. For the organization, the occurrences generated degradation in the workplace and in motivation and the team split, as well as income decline and other financial losses. Beyond the financial issues, there was also even more serious damage to the society, as a public institution should look after citizens´ properties and civil rights, whether concerning finances, productivity or social areas. We can conclude that moral harassment is a multidimensional process that violates the individual´s fundamental rights with severe impact on his/her physical and psychological health, on organizations and on the society in general

Determination of chloride diffusivity through partially saturated Portland cement concrete by a simplified procedure

A recently proposed methodology for measuring the diffusion coefficient of chloride ions through concrete partially saturated with water, has been applied to five high-early-strength Portland cement mortars. The method is based on putting solid NaCl in contact with the concrete surface during the diffusion test. The results obtained indicate a strong dependence of the diffusion coefficient on the water saturation degree. The ionic diffusivities through these mortars are higher than those obtained with the same approach for five pozzolanic cement mortars of similar compositions. It has been also shown that the proposed test methodology and a different one based on the interaction of HCl(g) with the tested concrete surface, can yield comparable results. The D values obtained are of similar magnitude, and the same type of dependence on the water saturation degree is found through both methods, when applied to similar Portland cement concrete mixes with cement content of about 350 kg/m3 and water/cement ratios between 0.5 and 0.6
