Spanish Foreign Direct Investments in Latin America: Internationalization Strategies and Financial Management Practices
This study analyzes the internationalization strategies and the financial management practices of seven Spanish companies with the largest volume of investments in Latin America. The companies selected for an in-depth analysis represent approximately 80 percent of the total Spanish foreign investments during the period of analysis. Their investments have taken place mainly in service sectors such as banking, energy, and telecommunications. The study identifies the market conditions and the corporate strategies that have allowed these Spanish companies to successfully initiate and expand business activities into Latin America. The findings suggest Spanish investors have strengthened their global competitiveness and have accomplished greater financial results
Institutional Determinants of the Argentinean Crisis: A Systemic Approach
The explanations given for the Argentinean crisis are
fragmentary and center almost exclusively on the causal relationships among economic variables. This study builds on the interpretations that various economists have presented regarding the Argentinean crisis. Based on identified factors, a conceptual approach is used to expose the systemic and dynamic nature of the crisis and to permit an analysis of the interrelationship among the economic, political and institutional factors that triggered it.
The article contends that in addition to economic and financial factors, the Argentinean crisis was aggravated due to: (1) institutional frailty, inadequate political management, and lack of transparency, which led to increasing instability and uncertainty; and (2) institutional weakness and obsolescence, which hindered reform consolidation and juridical standards for guaranteeing property rights and adherence to contracts. The article also maintains that the solutions to the crisis required the coordinated actions of different economic and political agents within the framework of a new social pact

Development of business schools in emerging markets: Learning through adoption and adaptation
The purpose of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the critical resources and capabilities that business schools (BS) have developed to achieve sustainable development. Framed within the resource-based theory, it analyzes seven of the top 50 BS from emerging markets (EM). It argues that these schools have grown through a development process of adopting and adapting business models, including teaching and research methodologies, organizational structures, and business practices; when they consolidated their local leadership, they started to follow a more idiosyncratic process. The findings shed light on the challenges that schools from EM face to deliver local impact while being measured by international standards and have implications for theory development, practice, and policymaking. In terms of theory, the findings show how the Global North model has exerted a determining influence in the development path of BS in EM, and, subsequently, how the pressure to respond to domestic demands has guided the acquisition of resources and the development of capabilities. For practice, the study reveals development patterns, clues about the challenges these BS face, and the range of solutions they have implemented. For policymaking, the case studies offer valuable lessons on how governments can design support systems for BS development
